Man the reviews are a cluster**** clearly the people leaving negative reviews expected a different type of game, and want this game to be something it's not. It's a good ol' arcade shooter, with mechanics very similar to the Afterburner series. And it does it really well.
TL;DR - This game is painfully mediocre and not worth your time. What makes it so bad? Well there's a saying that the whole is worth more than the sum of it's parts and unfortunately Redout: Space Assault is made from a litany of cheap and half-assed parts that fail to come together. The OST is dull and generic with some occasional electronic music thrown in to indicate "HIGH STAKES TENSION" occurring while otherwise being un-noteworthy space opera esque filler. The voice actors all sound bored out of their minds and have no passion for the dialogue that they're sprouting, which is unsurprising as it is utterly banal. The combat is all over the place as it attempts to mix on-rail space shooting some free flying sections, with the former lacking the nuance and excitement of other games such as Star Fox as enemies pop-in, scatter the screen in visual effects then jog-off without making any impact. While the latter are just dull as you mosey around the same generic space areas with the same props scattered around them looking for objectives which aren't well sign posted. There is an upgrade system but it basically just exists to incentivise the side missions as the rewards are infinitesimally minor and don't have much of an impact on gameplay (seriously you need to buy +missiles around 10 times to get one extra missile per salvo). Your ship has shields and a hull, the former regenerates while the latter doesn't, which would be fine but a lot of enemy attacks just straight up ignore your shield and most missions give you hull regeneration pickups anyway. Death has no punishment aside from taking away any currency you've obtained during the mission, but this currency only exists for the upgrades that don't do much. There's a barrel roll mechanic, but it doesn't work against most enemy attacks as it only exists to avoid missiles, which the enemy uses in abundance and which cause the game to beep aggressively at you like an irate microwave. Last but not least the mission designs sucks as there is a wildly oscillating difficulty curve, repeated bosses (Act 1 and Act 2 have the exact same boss, but now there's a time limit yay) and random fail states (some missions just end out of nowhere while others drag on and on). I guess to summarise this is a Eurojank version of Star Fox as it "shares" many of the same ideas and controls. Unfortunately it's aggressively boring and has none of the charm or dynamic routes through the campaign. Even as an avid bargain bin enthusiast who avoids AAA games, I can't recommend this one. It's just so incredibly DULL and has 0 charm to it.
Decent game. Kind of like Starfox-lite but with some grind and more upgrades and unlocks. You can do barrel rolls with RB or LB or right stick, you can temporarily speed up or slow down...controls very much like Starfox but with modern aesthetic, but no loop-de-loop or free roaming areas. A lot of reviews are people complaining about it being "on rails", I guess all of those people would have not recommended Starfox or House of the Dead....great games. On rails type games have their place and this one is fun. Not too hard, not too easy. Reviews deserve to be positive even at full price. I guess it was a mistake to brand the game as a Red Out game right in the title...I think that brought expectations of a different kind of game with it.
Damn, this game looks beautiful and once you get used to the controllers flows very well. I would have prefer the use of keyboard AND mouse for control and direction but so far this is a unique experience. it´s like an old school shooter mixed with everspace, I have both games and both deliver a very different and beautiful experience. For the negative reviews it is definitely not for everybody so check some gameplay before buying, do the research. For me it is worth the cost and surpassed my expectations. In fact I bought it thinking it was a space racer and was happily surprised by the experience.
Okay, not great. Probably worth the money spent on it. (I got it while it was on sale) The main disappointment is that the potential is there. This really could have been something great. It does have some conflicting draws between the high speed adrenelen of the Redout Franchise, and the classic space railshooter (which can get to bullet hell levels a points.) The Grindy bits with the ship upgrades really shouldn't have been there. And they do present a blocker to the later levels, as you can't complete the later missions without those upgrades.
Redout: Space Assault is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. You might be fooled as some token effort went into porting this to consoles and PC, you can even change the resolution and controls, and the graphics are polished... but that's just to cover up the low poly assets, a limitation caused by the iPhones this mobile app was designed for. Trying to play this is a decidedly unpleasant experience... it's a basic rail shooter (you know that old, dead game format that vanished when PCs became capable of full 3D, user controlled movement?). It's a rail shooter because mobile phones aren't capable of true 3D, fully user controlled, high fidelity gaming. Fine for mobile gamers, but this is PC. What's a mobile app doing here? Not belonging, that's what. To play this mobile app, just put your finger on your iphone screen to point at the bright flashy enemies and your ship will autoshoot them for you. Incredibly shallow stuff. From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. To make matters worse, there's no mouse input, despite this being sold on PC as if it were a PC game. This is unacceptable and somewhat insulting to PC gamers. It's a good demonstration of the poor attitude the developer has towards PC gamers, and this attitude has resulted in yet another defect in this mobile app. Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the mobile app was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The mobile app is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone. These technical defects push this mobile app below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Redout: Space Assault has the ridiculous, laughable price of $10 USD (TEN BUCKS FOR A MOBILE APP!!!!), for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. Given the defects and quality issues with the mobile app, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend. The game peaked at 35 players, immediately at launch, and that player count evaporated immediately overnight (suspicious), leaving just 1-2 players loading this up every week or so and quickly uninstalling it when they see how bad it is. This mobile app features a number of suspicious, likely fake positive reviews. The reviews all appear at almost exactly the same time, within 24 hours after the mobile app launched on Steam, all have a direct Steam purchase of the mobile app, and all have very similar wording and writing style. This is highly unusual given the very low quality of the game and poor player counts. After those reviews, there's just a tiny number of reviews that dibbled in, in line with the markedly low player counts for the game. If these reviews weren't present, the game would have a markedly different review score. The "Positive" review score on this mobile app should be taken with a large grain of salt. This might be done to deceive and scam gamers into paying for a bad product.
