ok game, small bugs, the characters don't always know how to go around trees, but run towards them and stay in place to run. moderately long game similar to desperados. in some areas even better.....
This isn't something to fill the gap of Desperados 3 and their other games. FPS-wise, it's 30-38 FPS no matter what settings. I don't think it's optimized properly.
When this game works properly it is fantastic however I have often found myself fighting the game itself and losing progress because I hadn't saved in a while(which is a well known mistake in any of these type of games). It is not the prettiest graphics wise which was not something I will take against it. Occasionally the enviroment made it difficult to see what was around me or what I was trying to do. There are a few bugs here and there but those weren't gamebreaking and I could usually, most of those were my guys getting stuck which was easily fixed by quicksaving and reloading. If you are a fan of the genre you should grab when its on sale. Once you get used to the occasional yanky and find way to manipulate the AI there is definitly some fun to be had.
As much as I want to love this game, as it brings back Commandos nostalgia and is a rarely built genre. That said, this game also doesn't play like Commandos does. In Commandos you were kind of rewarded for not triggering an alarm, enemies would pour out of the bunkers and/or garrisons, this game the alarms are localized and can be useful to attract attention to a spot.. I have to say wait for a sale or IF further updates happen. After playing about 5 hours to beat the first map, it is huge, and is the demo, I have to say that some of the positive reviews feel disingenuous. For example one review stated, "gripping storyline realistic graphics and seamless controls..." Story: So far other than a very light mission brief that can be said in a dozen fewer words. Germans are here; investigate why; kill target(s). And a few basic character dialogs that trigger when you enter a mission objectives area to give you a hint on what may make this objective easier or what to look for. Graphics: They are not bad and did go for realism, but some how they just don't feel right for this particular game, maybe it's a camera angle or something, I can't put my finger on it. Controls*: . . . One gripe could be that Execute is not remapable, but my gripe is that each character pawn has a pawn for quick access, which in the first mission isn't a problem, 1 for the first commando and 2 for the second, easy to remember and press. However the second mission the commandos are 3 and 5, with a full deck that wouldn't be a problem, but with only two on the field it is. Additionally without memorizing a commando's tool bar you will not know which one you currently have active. It would have been nice if the selected pawn was lightened or the unselected was darkened. Tutorial: Covers your first two characters, I think, but doesn't include a lot a details. Not in the tutorial: How to activate action mode, what button confirms it, oh look X hmmm that doesn't do anything... why is it there? Enter is the correct key, numpad enter is more convenient to hit then the the other for this. Shift to pause time and plan action(s). Balance: The first mission is balanced once you understand the specialty of each commando. However you have limited ammo for your weapons at the mission start, supply crates are scattered around the map and are a necessity. Still a common clip for most pistols is 15 rounds, why start the game with just 9 rounds and NO extra "clips"? For the second mission your two pawns are two new characters which feel completely unbalanced, as far as I can tell so far. With neither of them having pistols, one has a submachine which is inaccurate and vague on what you are firing at. you must make your one clip count once again. The other a long rifle, which is also not great for close combat. The primary weapons are a lasso guillotine and a bear trap, which are both far less convenient than a knife. * Other handy controls that the tutorial didn't cover? CAPS, this moves the camera to the currently selected character from it's current location. Clicking on the objective on the drop down list (ui button is, ? ), it will cycle between like objectives as well. Tab, I seen a complaint, in comments that the game is slow, well holding Tab speeds up time, very useful for when waiting for a patrol or an enemy to wonder back to the perfect location.
Resolution bugs! It's annoying to the point that I could not get past the menu. Would love to see some patch for this game, looks promising. But the bugs have not been fixed since 2024.
