THE BEAST OF THE BEAST
Red Dead Online
10/10 would fall asleep griefing again

Two hundred hours is a peculiar measure of time. It sounds finite, yet somewhere along those hours the frontier stopped being a game and quietly became a place I remembered. This was a gift, in more ways than one. For well over a hundred of those hours, I rode beside friends beneath crimson sunsets and endless skies, laughing over failed bounty hunts, celebrating impossible escapes, and finding that rare truth all online worlds occasionally reveal: people make places sacred. I rode a faithful mustang that carried me through deserts, forests, swamps, and snow without complaint. At my side rested a pair of six-shooters plated in gold, engraved not because they made me stronger, but because beauty has always been its own language. Dressed in the finest clothes the Old West could offer, I wandered less like a gunslinger and more like a pilgrim. The map remains one of the greatest digital landscapes ever created. Every valley, every weathered cabin, every mountain trail seems to whisper that nature is older than ambition and indifferent to it. There is a strange theosophical lesson hidden beneath the dust, that every creature, every river, every sunrise participates in the same living order. Whether tracking legendary animals, collecting herbs as a naturalist, hunting game, chasing treasure maps, bringing fugitives to justice as a bounty hunter, or brewing moonshine as a bootlegger, each role felt like another path toward understanding the same frontier. There is plenty to do... until, eventually, you've done it all. That isn't a criticism so much as the fate of every journey. The jobs become familiar. The rewards lose their shine. The road grows quiet. Perhaps that is the philosophy of the West itself: no frontier remains unexplored forever. Like every online PC game, there were hackers. They interrupted moments that otherwise felt almost timeless. It was frustrating, but never enough to erase the memories that mattered. When I look back, I don't remember the money I earned or the levels I gained. I remember the campfires. The long rides with friends. The silence between conversations. The sound of hooves crossing a wooden bridge at dawn. The feeling that, for a little while, we belonged to another century. Some games entertain you. Some games leave footprints on your memory. Red Dead Online did both.
