good one
Thought it was an RPG turned out to be an ancient survival guide with dragons and awkward dialogue now I’m the keeper of swords and memes.
Realms of Arkania 3: Shadows over Riva Classic, developed by Attic Entertainment Software and published by United Independent Entertainment, represents the final chapter of one of the most ambitious and uniquely European role-playing trilogies ever made. Released during an era when Western RPGs were beginning to evolve toward accessibility and cinematic flair, Shadows over Riva proudly stood its ground as a dense, statistics-heavy, and unapologetically complex experience rooted in the German tabletop system *Das Schwarze Auge* (The Dark Eye). It builds upon the foundation set by its predecessors, Blade of Destiny and Star Trail, while refining and expanding many of their mechanics. The result is a game that captures the spirit of pen-and-paper role-playing with a level of mechanical depth and authenticity that few titles, even decades later, can match. The story of Shadows over Riva begins deceptively small but gradually unfolds into a tale of political intrigue, corruption, and supernatural horror. The player controls a party of adventurers arriving in the coastal city of Riva, where reports of orcish incursions and strange disappearances have stirred unrest among the populace. What begins as a simple investigation into orc activity soon spirals into a web of conspiracies involving a corrupt city council, mysterious cults, and a parasitic evil lurking beneath the city’s streets. The narrative, while text-heavy, is remarkably layered for its time, blending grounded medieval politics with the eerie tone of cosmic dread. Each decision—whether to side with one faction, investigate a lead, or explore the city’s underbelly—feels meaningful, and the world responds with a sense of consequence that reflects the moral ambiguity of the setting. The writing retains that distinctly European flavor of fantasy: mature, melancholic, and occasionally brutal in its honesty. Mechanically, Shadows over Riva remains one of the most intricate CRPGs ever released. Character creation is exhaustive, offering players control over every possible attribute, from strength and dexterity to arcane knowledge and even personality traits. Skills like herb lore, etiquette, or carpentry may seem trivial but can have subtle effects throughout the adventure. Combat, while turn-based, relies on a deep ruleset that takes into account positioning, fatigue, weapon proficiency, and morale. Every encounter feels tactical and dangerous; even low-level fights can punish poor preparation or overconfidence. Outside combat, the game’s survival elements—such as maintaining food supplies, resting, and dealing with illness or exhaustion—keep the experience grounded. Every success feels earned because failure is always just a few careless steps away. This adherence to realism can be overwhelming at first, but for those who appreciate games that demand thought and planning, it offers immense satisfaction. The city of Riva itself serves as one of the most memorable settings in the series. It is smaller and more contained than the sprawling wilderness of Star Trail, but this focus works to the game’s advantage. The city is alive with detail: citizens go about their business, rumors spread through taverns, and secret passages weave through the sewers and catacombs below. There is a tangible sense of decay and tension hanging over Riva—a city beset by fear and distrust, its people caught between the orcish threat outside and corruption within. Exploring its districts and subterranean chambers feels immersive, and the atmosphere is bolstered by subtle ambient sound effects and music that evoke the melancholy of a world on the brink of ruin. Even with the dated graphics and clunky interface, there’s an unmistakable charm to its handcrafted design, one that invites you to imagine rather than merely observe. One of the game’s greatest strengths lies in its worldbuilding and how it integrates lore with gameplay. Every location, from the merchant’s quarter to the temple of Praios, feels grounded within the larger mythology of The Dark Eye. The player’s party is not just a group of adventurers but citizens of a living world with rules, faiths, and traditions that shape how people behave. Conversations require attention; the text is rich, often poetic, and filled with cultural nuance that rewards careful reading. The investigation-style quests also lend a unique flavor to the narrative, with much of the gameplay revolving around deduction and exploration rather than constant combat. The mystery of Riva and the infestation beneath its foundations unfold gradually, creating a sense of creeping dread that culminates in one of the trilogy’s most memorable finales. Yet, Shadows over Riva is not without its flaws. Its devotion to simulation comes at the expense of accessibility. The interface, while functional, can feel cumbersome, and the learning curve is steep even for players familiar with older RPGs. Many of the game’s mechanics are poorly explained, forcing players to rely on manuals or trial and error. Certain skills, while theoretically interesting, see little practical use, and combat can sometimes feel sluggish or overly reliant on dice rolls rather than strategy. The pacing can also drag in the latter half of the game, where lengthy dungeon crawls replace the rich urban intrigue of the earlier chapters. However, these frustrations are the byproduct of ambition rather than neglect—the game attempts to capture the entirety of a tabletop role-playing session, and its complexity reflects that goal. Despite its age and limitations, Shadows over Riva remains a remarkable achievement. It represents a time when RPGs were not afraid to challenge players intellectually, rewarding patience and critical thinking over convenience. For veterans of classic role-playing games or fans of The Dark Eye universe, it offers a deeply rewarding experience filled with meaningful choices, intricate mechanics, and a world that feels both hostile and alive. Even newcomers willing to look past its dated visuals and archaic interface will find a gem of narrative depth and mechanical complexity. Realms of Arkania 3: Shadows over Riva Classic endures as a relic of a bygone era—an artifact of pure, uncompromising RPG craftsmanship. It demands commitment, curiosity, and a willingness to engage with systems that no longer hold your hand. Yet for those who take the time to understand its rhythms, it offers something increasingly rare in modern games: a sense of true adventure, where knowledge, preparation, and perseverance matter more than reflex or spectacle. It is as much a test of patience as it is of skill, but the satisfaction of surviving Riva’s corruption and uncovering its dark secrets is timeless. Rating: 7/10

I remember this game from when I was very young, I would basically only use it to create characters and get to the first fight, not know how to progress beyond that point and then create a new game and repeat this process for hours and hours haha, good times.
