This game is truly awesome, It polished gem that everyone has missed out and that was hidden in the propagande of the Total war series. It´s well worth 20 euro even though it now is on sale for just 2 euro. I has high quality graphics and feels very immersive. Combat seems more realistic in pace than the total war series and it has a very interesting campaign. I havent played so much but this game does not deserver all that bad critique it has gotten. I dont understand those at all.

Real Warfare 2: Northern Crusades, developed by Unicorn Games Studio and published by Fulqrum Publishing, is an ambitious and uncompromising historical real-time strategy game that seeks to portray medieval warfare on a scale and with a level of complexity rarely attempted in the genre. Set during the 13th-century Northern Crusades, the game places players in command of the Teutonic Order as it wages campaigns against pagan Prussian tribes, blending grand strategy, RPG-style progression, and massive real-time battles into a single, demanding experience. From the outset, it is clear that this is not a streamlined or casual RTS, but a dense simulation aimed at players who value historical atmosphere, scale, and systemic depth over accessibility. The campaign structure is one of the game’s defining features. Rather than presenting a sequence of isolated missions, Real Warfare 2 unfolds across a persistent strategic map where armies move freely, interact with factions, undertake quests, and manage resources in real time. This layer borrows heavily from RPG and sandbox design philosophies, allowing players to decide where to travel, whom to fight, and how to grow their forces. The sense of continuity is strong, as commanders and units gain experience, improve their skills, and carry the scars of previous engagements into future battles. This approach creates a feeling of commanding a living army rather than disposable units, reinforcing long-term planning and attachment. When opposing forces clash, the game transitions seamlessly into real-time tactical battles that emphasize scale above all else. Engagements can involve thousands of soldiers on screen simultaneously, forming shield walls, cavalry charges, and chaotic infantry clashes that attempt to reflect the brutality and disorder of medieval warfare. Terrain plays a significant role, with hills, forests, and choke points influencing morale and effectiveness. Sieges are particularly notable, featuring walls, towers, and siege equipment that demand careful positioning and patience rather than brute-force rushing. At its best, these battles feel weighty and consequential, with victories earned through positioning, endurance, and the careful preservation of veteran troops. Combat mechanics lean heavily toward simulation rather than clarity. Morale, fatigue, unit cohesion, and leadership all influence outcomes, often in ways that are not immediately obvious. This can make battles feel unpredictable, especially for newcomers, but it also adds a layer of realism that rewards players who study unit behavior and battlefield conditions. However, this ambition comes with drawbacks. Pathfinding can struggle under the weight of massive armies, and issuing precise orders in the heat of battle can feel cumbersome. Moments that should feel triumphant can occasionally descend into confusion when units fail to respond cleanly or formations collapse unexpectedly. Visually, Real Warfare 2 reflects both its historical focus and its era of development. Armor, weapons, and environments are thematically appropriate and grounded, emphasizing authenticity over spectacle. While the scale of battles remains impressive, animations and textures show their age, and the interface can feel dense and unintuitive by modern standards. The UI prioritizes information density over ease of use, which fits the game’s hardcore identity but raises the barrier to entry. Players willing to invest time in learning the systems will find depth, while others may find the presentation off-putting. The pacing of the game is deliberate and often slow, especially on the strategic map. Travel, preparation, and resource management take time, and there are stretches where progress feels incremental rather than dramatic. This pacing reinforces the feeling of a prolonged military campaign but can test patience, particularly when objectives are unclear or progress stalls due to logistical constraints. The lack of strong onboarding or tutorials further amplifies this challenge, making the early hours particularly demanding. Multiplayer support exists, allowing players to test their armies against others in large-scale battles, but this component has always been niche. The game’s complexity and mixed reputation mean that finding opponents is not always easy, and the multiplayer experience largely serves dedicated fans rather than a broad competitive audience. As a result, the title’s longevity rests primarily on its single-player campaign and sandbox elements. Overall, Real Warfare 2: Northern Crusades is a deeply ambitious strategy game that succeeds more through scope and intent than through refinement. It offers a rare blend of grand strategy, RPG progression, and massive real-time battles set within a historically grounded medieval context. While its dated visuals, steep learning curve, and technical roughness prevent it from being widely approachable, it remains a compelling experience for players who crave large-scale historical warfare and are willing to tolerate rough edges in exchange for depth. For dedicated strategy enthusiasts with an interest in medieval military campaigns, it stands as a challenging and distinctive title that rewards persistence and thoughtful command. Rating: 5/10
Warning: Broken Game! This game has design/implementation defects that will render this unplayable for many gamers. The game does not launch under Windows 11, and will crash Windows Explorer if you try.
This 16 year old game hasn't been patched or updated in 14 years, it's broken and unmaintained, but the developer, who knows it's broken, is still trying to charge money for it... at what point does deliberately unethical behaviour like this become a criminal attempt at fraud? Anyway, when this worked, it was basically Total War: Medieval from Temu... a clunky UI, even when it was maintained it was riddled with bugs and barely worked. Thematically the concept seems reasonable, but bandits don't actually field heavy armored cavalry on the field of battle. Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in an unplayable and broken state. It's the responsibility of the developer to maintain their product, ensure it runs on all modern PCs, or if they determine there's defects and the game doesn't work, they should remove it from sale instead of misleadingly trying to scam gamers into buying knowingly defective products. This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, not just because it's a direct and intentional attempt to scam people, but because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience. The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the laughable, eye-watering price of $5 USD for a game they know is broken. Don't give it to them. Just buy Total War: Medieval and play that like everyone else.
