A Journey Through Fractured Memories

Storyline:
Imagine waking up in an abandoned hospital bed, unsure of where you are or even who you are. Rays kicks off with that exact disorienting sense of mystery. As Adam, you’re thrown into a world that’s just as surreal as it is beautiful, where nothing stays the same for long, yet everything feels deeply connected. Rays takes you on a surreal journey from the time you wake up, moving back and forth between actual life and something more otherworldly. It starts out easy: you're in a hospital, bewildered, and the next thing you know, you're on the floor. You get a vision of what feels like heaven while you are unconscious, and a sweet voice murmurs, "Remember, Adam, you are not alone." And then, in the blink of an eye, you find yourself on a beach questioning your very existence. "Can a person be themselves without their memories, without the history that shapes their essence?" The game's plot is crazy. You can be in the hospital, on a beach, or in an amusement park. The plot is confusing because there is no obvious transition between settings. Adam initially thinks he's unlocking his memories, but each site raises more questions than answers. As you walk through the entertainment park, you see Elia. Her face looks familiar, but neither of you can remember why. Identity, memory, and existence are big ideas in the story, but it leaves a lot open to opinion. Some parts of the story aren't even translated into English, which makes things even more confusing. Still, this story's broken pieces might be what draws some people to it. It's almost like you, the player, are lost like Adam, trying to figure out who you are in a world that won't make things clear. At one point, you even encounter robot-like creatures and engage in conversations with kings, giving the impression that you're jumping from one era to another. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3339116421
Gameplay:
Rays' primary mechanism consists of choices, which can be either untimed or timed quick decisions. When faced with a fast-paced situation, you have a few seconds to make a decision, and occasionally, these snap judgments are what advance the plot. There are a few mini-games scattered throughout, although none of them are very difficult. The unpredictability of "jumping" from place to place lessens the significance of the choices, even if they are supposed to feel significant. You wonder if you've changed Adam's path, but you don't always comprehend the repercussions. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3339116538 While there are several fates depending on your choices, the story's speed makes it difficult to become fully immersed. One moment you're having waffles at an amusement park, and the next you're in a wilderness, challenged by Fenrir, a talking wolf that kidnaps Elia and threatens your dog companion, Bron. The unpredictability of the images makes it tough to immerse oneself, but perhaps that's the point—Rays wants you to feel like Adam, striving to piece together his life.
Sounds and Graphics:
The artistic direction is where Rays shines. A beautiful but eerie mood is created by the surroundings, which resemble wonderful acrylic paintings. The haunted forest, the beach, and the amusement park are all like separate works of art. Yet, the sprites aren't enough on their own. Despite their amazing appearance, they don't do anything during the game other than blink an eye or flush their cheeks every so often. Feelings of immersion are dampened when there is a gulf between your environment and the people you're engaging with. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3339116664 The game's background music enhances each scene's ambiance without overpowering it. The sound effects are superb. The soft crash of waves on the beach, the amusement park fireworks, and the rustling leaves all fit the scene. The sound design team's expertise enhances an otherwise confusing experience.
Final Verdict:
Rays is a beautifully broken game. It tries to be ambitious with its story and art direction, but it fails to live up to those goals. I wasn't sure whether to give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down because, on the one hand, the game's beautiful graphics and unique sound design make it feel like you're really there. The uneven plot and unclear narration, on the other hand, make it hard to stay interested. The frequent changes of setting and the parts that weren't translated made me more confused than interested. It's a lovely experience, but it's tough to completely appreciate because of the disjointed execution. That being said, if you prefer games that leave you with more questions than answers and value stunning visual and sound design, Rays may be for you.
A very interesting visual novel with fun minigames and great backgrounds. One thing I will say is, there are no hints in this game and choices leading to specific outcomes aren't obvious at all.
В следующий раз лучше сымитируйте стиль рисовки и подход к повествованию из "Milk outside a bag of milk".
