About

After the fall of civilisation, the City is the only thing still standing.
Outpost Alcyone : the Nihility spread across the universe at close to the speed of light, unmaking & twisting everything it encountered. We had enough warning to protect ourselves as we saw the distant stars flicker out one by one. Alcyone's old name was forgotten and became simply the City.

Alcyone: The Last City is an interactive sci-fi novel in which the player's choices heavily impact the overall narrative, opening or closing pathways through the story, and greatly affecting the end of the game. From the outset, players will have to weigh difficult options, all of which impact the game and provide different insights into the various organisations, Houses, diverse characters, and deep lore of the City. Players are encouraged to live with their decisions, even if the consequences are dire — there is no true failure in the City, only experience.

At over a quarter of a million words in length, Alcyone: The Last City has an intricate narrative in which your decisions dramatically and meaningfully affect the story you experience. Explore over seven different endings, five mainline and two bonus romance storylines (including aromantic pathways), plus thousands of choices that make each and every playthrough a uniquely rewarding experience.

Will you be a force for destruction, or will your decisions aid the existing powers that be? Alcyone: The Last City offers a multitude of choices to forge your path inspired by a RPG character system where attributes such as Body, Vigour, Mind, and Charm affect your engagement with the story.
The game starts with your character waking in the Rebirthing Facility upon being brought to life. There, you will craft your persona by selecting attributes such as your gender identity, status, whether or not you had a significant other in your previous life, and even the manner in which you might have died — all of which contribute to a uniquely customised experience that has long-lasting effects on the story and how you can interact with it.

Alcyone: The Last City complements its complex narrative with a clean and aesthetically pleasing user interface, gorgeous high-resolution, hand-drawn digital artwork, and a full-length soundtrack to underscore the depth and emotion of each choice within your story.

Shielded and walled away from the decimation and destruction of the void outside, inhabitants have lived for centuries with the serenity provided by the City's protection. Governed under the benevolence of the Six Ruling Houses, humanity continues to demonstrate its tenacity in surviving and adapting to whatever fate befalls it. Normal life continues — after a fashion. We persist.
But the Six are lying to us.
And the Nihility is more than we've been told.
And there's a way out of the City.

I'm a backer of the game's crowdfunding and was initially excited to play this, liking the beginning of the story. But then I notcied telltale signs of AI-generated art in most of the game's assets and that made me stop and research this topic. Now, I'm not a hardline "no gen AI" person. Generative AI is a tool that can be used, especially for small developer teams, but its use should be properly disclosed, which is also required by Valve. However, here we have a developer doubling down on how it's not AI-generated in Kickstarter comments, and the game literally advertizes "gorgeous high-resolution, hand-drawn digital artwork". This is disingenious and leaves a bad impression that will cause me not to play the game further and request my name to be removed from the credits. For proof, I have compiled some exmaples at https://imgur.com/a/t3vytH8 - but you can also download the demo version hosted at Itch and decide for yourself. I've had my share of experience with gen AI, and my conclusion is that most of the 2D art in the release version is lightly edited AI output. But it is perhaps worse; looking up older, beta screenshots of the game reveals that it featured hand-drawn art in a different, painterly art style but with similar overall compositions to the release art. Instead, the art has been swapped for the current state shortly before release in Feb 2025.
Cool narrative adventure. I backed this on kickstarter years ago when I was really into Fallen London and it was really pleasantly nostalgic to play something like that again. Its got a simple lo-fi presentation style, allowing you to purely concentrate on the writing, which has been uniformly excellent so far.
I'm absolutely loving this game so far! The basic premise of the story is fascinating, and the writing is so good that I barely even notice that I'm reading text - the writing flows elegantly where it should, and brings you up short with crises in the best way. Even the UI is gorgeous and easy to use. Can't wait to see more!
A really fun interactive story. Loving it so far, can't wait to see more of it.
You slowly awaken in a cold, sterile room. Who are you? Where are you? What happened? The bad news: you died. The good news: you've been reborn into a newly-cloned body. Alcyone drops you into this mysterious and fascinating sci-fi world, a city sealed off from the rest of the reality by a mysterious (and terrifying) barrier. It's up to you what you do next. Will you seek out fame and fortune? Find love? Discover the secrets of the city? Whatever you decide, you'll have plenty of exploring to do: Alcyone has a good-sized novel's worth of text in a branching narrative, livened up with a relatively rules-lite stats system, images and music, and map navigation. Highly recommended if you like thrilling text adventures with choose-your-own-adventure style gameplay.
I have a little over three hours in at the point of this review and I'm enjoying myself! Think a pick your own adventure combined with RPG elements such as limited gear and stats that can influence how you make decisions (Charisma, Body, Mind, etc). I do like that you get to pick your origins but do wish there was a bit more customization! I can understand why there isn't but just a lil teeny bit more would make me feel more attached to my character. Overall, though, I'm enjoying the chill experience of watching the world-building unfold and am looking forward to where my first ending will lead!
I really enjoyed this game. Brilliant writing that built an immersive world and made me feel emotionally invested in my character.
The game offers a rich tapestry of political intrigue and moral dilemmas. The hand-painted artwork and atmospheric soundtrack elevate the experience. A must-play for fans of narrative-driven games. The city Alcyone remains —a city of secrets, choices, and stories untold. A journey worth taking.
An interactive novel with an interesting setting and lots of different pathways to explore. I had to wait *forever* on this after backing the kickstarter (in 2016 I believe?) but I have no regrets.
