[h2]I feel like [b]Rated Sudoku[/b] is the clever person's version of Sudoku and it's definitely improved my understanding of the game. [/h2] I'm by no means a seasoned Sudoku player. I like to do them in the puzzle books and I will attempt the ones in the newspapers but I wouldn't say I have much more experience than that. I thought I knew how to play Sudoku but Rated Sudoku has certainly opened my eyes to some techniques I had not even heard of, yet alone considered when playing. Thanks to its excellent training school I was able to understand and put into practice naked singles, naked sets, hidden singles, intersections, and pointing and claiming. These are all techniques used to remove candidates, which are potential numbers for a square. I am yet to learn about fish, XYZwings, chains, rectangles, ALS, BUGS and Sue De Coq because some of these techniques are quite scientific and I was having trouble getting my head around them. However, just from the first half of the tutorial I have learnt so much and I am much improved. It's really neat that this game has such a comprehensive tutorial section and you can even play sample grids which are designed to put a particular technique into practice. On the bottom of the play area are various buttons which will do all the hard work for you. Spot a naked set for example, click the correct button and the game will remove all the candidates from the right places for you. It threw me a bit at the start because whenever I have played Sudoku some numbers were already placed and everything else was blank, and I scribbled the potential numbers in the blank squares and crossed them out when that column, row, or grid was populated with that number. In Rated Sudoku the potential numbers are already present and instead you are concentrating more on spotting patterns using the techniques in the tutorial and letting the system sort the rest out. Of course, you have to press the correct button for it to work. Each button is different and gives you a brief description of what it will look for but I must say that it took me a while to hit the right button even though I had identified a pattern, and I still regularly hit the wrong one. Each time you hit a wrong button you will use mana and once your mana depletes you will have to finish the puzzle manually without help. There is a hint button and an analyse button but I couldn't understand how to use them. It sends you to a separate page which looks quite mathematical but it never helped me move on with the puzzle. I was never sure what the page was showing me, so for me the hint options were redundant. The undo button is very handy and you can play the game manually if you like by entering numbers through the keyboard rather than let the special buttons do it for you. There is a rated section with a leader board for you to compete on and achievements to aim for. There are also more advanced options to make up your own Sudoku grid and even use paint techniques to show off various techniques and use for tutorials. The game feels very advanced, like a mathematical genius has thought this up, yet it can cater for both beginners and experts with a decent difficulty adjuster and over 3000 existing puzzles and a puzzle generator that literally means you can have an unlimited amount of puzzles to play catered to your needs. The presentation of the game, including the menus, feels a little basic and could be made a little more eye pleasing but everything is functional and works well.
