Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

great game that brings the nostalgia, but with awesome graphics. Highly recommend if you are a R&C fan.

great game for all ages! lots of fun, lots of jokes and easy to play. glad i finally played it!

An immense amount of gratitude to Nixxes Software for porting this wonderful game to PC. Insomniac Games did such a fantastic job with this playable feature film, not just with some of the jaw-dropping technical aspects of the game, the art direction and graphics, the classic R&C gameplay with a fine coat of paint, the wacky as ever roster of fun weapons and gadgets to mess around with, the acting (both animation & voice) is on point, but the standout of it all is how they shaped the new stars of this entry: Rivet & Kit. Rivet is fantastic. She can find even the tiniest crack of positivity in the wall of despair that surrounds her. It's not naivete, it's not gullibility, it's an inspirational amount of hope. She has gotten so far despite severe odds, saved so many lives, even single-handedly built herself a new arm after a traumatic loss. But wisely, her biggest flaw is depicted as being something of a loner, shaped into that by a searingly hostile dimension, where trust is a luxury, and the likelihood of an actual ally surviving is slim. Despite being the nexus of a rebellion, coordinating where possible, she works alone, repeatedly to her detriment. Kit is a distilled depiction of how those that made you cannot dictate who you turn out to be in the end, if you don't let them. That family is who you choose. That figuring out who she is on her own terms, forming real friendships, and learning to open up is a healthy, vital part of being a person. She learns that to defy and fight the small-minded despot she was created to serve, she must face her fears, and embrace herself. While both Rivet & Kit are very capable in their own ways on their own, every setback they have is the result of hitting the limits of what one person alone can do. One's strengths can help balance out the other's weaknesses, and once they are together, they can fully succeed. I've seen the game derided sometimes as "oh it's just colorful simplistic kiddie nonsense, you should play a real sci-fi game" and then such a person proceeds to gesture towards one of the dozens of "dark and gritty" play-as-generic-human-in-spacesuit-shooting-at-Alien-ripoff-monsters-while-everyone-dies-and-the-universe-is-a-bleak-scary-nightmare games out there that you can ironically "turn your brain off" to, and I just have to shrug. Rift Apart has balance, it is absolutely devoid of the brain-poison that is nihilism, and stamps on it ever creeping in with a well-textured boot. It's as upbeat and goofy as it is contemplative and morose, and all done with sincerity. The story teaches the important lesson that toppling evil requires solidarity, teamwork, and genuine trust. That life requires the understanding that people can change, that people can get better, cause it's not too late to do what's right as long as you're still kicking. Mixing eachother's strengths and perspectives and banding together as one can take down any tyrant. Rivet in particular showcases how important personal and revolutionary optimism is. Even in the face of traumatic, colossally slim odds, she can still stay focused on creating a brighter tomorrow. She can still find it in her to dance.

Very good entry to the series. Insomniac Games always knows what they're doing. The game is 50% you playing as Ratchet and the other 50% is you playing as a new Lombax known as Rivet. The story is relatively predictable at times, but it doesn't take away from how much of a blast the gameplay is. Giving the jet boots a boost function and making it act like "sprint" was an incredible addition to the series. The planets are all very unique and fun to explore. The large number of weapons are all very fun. The new hacking minigames are pretty fun as well. Clank sections were a little rough and kind of broke the momentum at times. I don't have any other negative points about this game though. While it's not the best game in the series (Up Your Arsenal is pretty hard to live up to), it's an incredible experience and very much worth a try if you want to give the series a shot or just want to try a new platformer-shooter. I very much recommend it. 8.75/10.
