About
Rat Overflow is a deceptively cute rat breeding simulator about genetics, glory, and having way too many rats.
Breed fancy rats with a realistic color genetics system, show them off in competitions, and try to keep track of your ever-growing colony. Pick your pairings carefully — or don't — and watch the pups grow into champions, beloved pets, or delightful genetic surprises. With thousands of possible rat appearances driven by real inheritance mechanics.
Start with humble stock, outcross from five quirky NPC breeders — each with their own color specialties and personalities — and build bloodlines that dominate the show circuit. But be warned: Rats breed fast. More pups are on the way. They're always on the way.
Enter your best rats in shows against rival breeders, win championships, and level up to unlock new breeders with new color varieties and better genetics.
Over a dozen genetic loci control color, markings, health, and conformation. Siamese, Russian Blue, Dumbo ears, Rex coats — it's all in the genes. Breed strategically, or discover what happens when you don't.
Buy outfits and accessories to style your rats for photo ops. Express yourself. They're your rats now.
Realistic genetics with 14+ loci and thousands of color/pattern combinations
5 NPC breeders to unlock, each with distinct specialties
Multi-tier show system with rival competitors
Health and conformation genetics — longevity and show success are inherited
Pastel retro aesthetic with pixel art and a Windows 98-inspired UI
A gentle but persistent sense that you have too many rats

Very repetitive very quickly. My biggest issue is that it takes AGES of grinding to level up, but you can't breed better rats unless you level up to 3, then 5, etc. It would be way more fun if there were challenges that were not related to level! I should be able to breed excellent rats from scratch, not have to buy better rats as I level up.
Lovely game. many rats. i like
I do like it but it does have "sticky times" where it seems like the game wont progress with days (yes I know the speed options, the game was not paused) and have to reload my game. I love the rats, the colors and the different breeds, however i wish the family tree system for breeding would be set up a bit better. While it easily showed cousins siblings etc a few times I have accidentally bred my rats with their parents because they weren't highlighted the same as other relatives. I would love to see some steam achievements especially with how litters can be an investment or gamble and the amount of rats you can have is astounding. I would also love to see different behaviors other than curious/friendly some rats are hoarders. Some are lovers and some are sassy, it would also be nice to have specifics for selling rats like if you sell someone a certain color/type you get more money/xp
Absolutely loving Rat Overflow so far! It is exactly what I've been looking for for a long, long time. I'm very excited to see where it goes! <3
Not really worth all the money because theres not much to do besides breeding, selling and waiting
This game is amazing. If you like cute chill genetics games this will be right up your alley. I can't wait to see whats in store as the game develops.
I think this game has a very good genetics system! I also love the pixel art :)
I adore genetics games, and this is one of my favs! :3
One of the best breeding/show games I've ever played and I LOVE genetics. Plus the rat pixel art is adorable! <3
I really like this game where it's at! I've always enjoyed animal breeding games that are based off of realistic genetics. I love the addition of the COI, it really adds to the realism. I think a nice addition would be the addition of buying food, cages, toys, and other things that you would need to keep rats happy and healthy. Something that can get you to spend more money since at this point when you have good genetics you don't have to buy new rats nearly as much. You really only need to in order to get new colors.
