honestly. after owning this game since early access and trying both dlc's. its not great. hasnt been updated in over a year and barely works. buggy as ♥♥♥♥. it can be fun if you dont care about operations much but honestly just buy "railroader" or "derail valley" or wait for "century of steam" to come out and you will get WAY more bang for you buck if you want a realistic experience.
I made the mistake of backing this during Early Access. It was a fun premise during EA, that we bought into it, with the promice of constant updates and new content. It's 2026, and the game has not had an update in 2 years. The game still has bugs and unfinished UI, and a lot of rough spots. That buyout should have never happened, and we have a dead game out of it. Atleast there wasn't DLC for every single new engine, so that's a plus.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

a lot of the comments I have read are people who are mad that the game is abandoned and taking it out on the rest of the game. so here is a non bias review: 1. yes the game is abandoned and the devs refused the give tools for mod support so you get what you pay for and thats it. 2. i cannot confirm this froma first had perspective but many second hand accounts of dev interactions make them to be a narcissistic ass. 3. I run this on a low-mid end pc (Ryzen 5 4500, rtx 3060 12gb) and I can run this on maxed out setting (except LOD) in 1440p hitting around 80-90fps. which across all games I play that's average. so the performance is fine and people are cry babies. most probably tried to play this on an ancient pc and wondered why it cant run well. the game looks great 4. the physics are tied to frame rate (at least that what i understand based on the warning you get when playing multiplayer.) so higher fps = less derails at higher speeds. this from a design point is flawed and an old way of doing things. this was a corner cut to save time and i personally disapprove. this is also why people say the physics are janky. that and loading and unloading is a bit basic. 5. the gameplay loop and grind is what you'd expect from what was supposed to essentially be an mmo for trains. playing solo is one big grind and can get frustrating. you build track from A-B. you deliver goods from B-A. now you build tracks from B-C. repeat. 6. price is great. £25 for a game you can sink hours into is amazing. considering most of us gamers buy a £70+ game then play it once maybe twice and get 30-60 hours in it max, this is good value. overall its worth its money but if you can't handles a little bit of jank or you have a old dust pc then i don't recommend. plese feel free to ask for extra details in the comments or debate my points should you disagree. the whole point of reviews is to help others make informed decisions so criticism is welcome.
Calling this game finished is a huge disappointment. Massively undelivered promises from the early access period still not fulfilled. It is still very buggy, and there is little challenge built into the game. Instead of adding more enriching gameplay, they keep dumbing the game down to a model train game that happens to be multiplayer. The game desperately needs something to increase the challenging of operating the railroad. True fireman mechanics, water simulation, maintenance, etc.
If there was a neutral option on Steam, I would use that, however, I cannot recommend spending $35 dollars on this game. The premise of this game is simple: build tracks, serve industries, make money. THE GOOD: This game can be a decent amount of fun when playing with friends, and the models are also pretty nice and diverse. The maps are also beautiful, and a lot of fun to build on. The customization is also alright. THE BAD: As a person who has been here since the early days of this game, the levels of QOL we have gotten since the first team left is extremely low. While I myself have a lack of history when it comes to bugs due to me owning a supercomputer, many of the people I have played with have had many issues with this game. Instead of actually fixing bugs that have been around since launch, the current team under Keume have instead chosen to release eye candy assets and new features that more often than not have caused new bugs and issues that makes the game unplayable for many members of the community. After the second team came and went, the current team have been silencing almost all criticism towards the game and banning many members of the community from the Discord and Steam Forums. After CoS (Century Of Steam) was announced in July of 2023, the game has dived into a tailspin of rushed and low quality updates in an attempt to catch up, such as the poorly implemented knuckle couplers, the absolutely rushed map "Lake Valley", passenger cars without any basic functionality, a Class 125 which was obviously copied from CoS, cheap buildings bought off of the Unreal Engine store, unrealistic implementation of snow, etc., etc., etc. The devs have not focused on improving their game, but rather copying their future rival as quickly as possible. To anyone who wants to debate my point, watch the video "Official NYO&SW Plagiarism Statement", and also take into account that we got rapid fire updates after the CoS announcement, while before then updates were way less frequent. The decision to release the game into 1.0 was a poor one, as many other early access games (such as Railroader, and Derail Valley) have way more quality control than this game. The fact that this is called a finished product is lwk insane. TLDR: This game, while fun, is plagued by numerous issues, bugs, and the devs are toxic and too stubborn to fix anything in this game. Instead of buying RRO, buy Railroader or Derail Valley, and/or wait for Century of Steam instead. All of those games are much better or show clear signs of a caring dev team who listens to the community.
I used to play this game, but then there was a bunch of drama within the dev team where some outsider came in and tried to hijack the entire game's development so he could turn it into a Brazilian train game. Then a bunch of guys like Hyce broke off and started developing Century of Steam, and then I learned about Railroader, one of the best train games I've ever played. Do not buy this. There are better train games like Railroader, Trainz, and Transport Fever 2 (Train Sim World and its grossly-overpriced DLC can choke on it).
Decent enough game, entirely abandoned. Most, if not all, of the original staff jumped ship a while back though, likely leading it to be the state that it is in today. Many of that team (at least to my knowledge) is working on Century of Steam, just play that whenever it releases. Century of Steam has an active dev team that provides regular devlogs. This game is dead, don't waste your time.
dead game, derail sim, I really love going car by car on my 35 car train to re rail every single one because there was a 3 inch tall weed that caused my mutli ton locomotive to tip on its side. I also love spending 30 minutes re railing everything because I added 33% break and not 32. I also love spending 40 minutes loading the trains and 5 minutes actually driving them.
The game is boring, buggy, and poorly optimized. Deciding to 1.0 release this game in its current state is extremely disappointing and insulting. Not to mention to core loop of the game hasn't even changed a bit in 3-4 years of early access development. Running a train back and forth gets extremely boring when you dumb down a steam engine to not even have steam simulation or proper firing. I do not recommend this game, especially since the developers choose to ignore the community and major problems while pretending everything is fine. (They also increased the price without making a better product) TLDR Incompetent developers full release buggy product and increase the price while ignoring the community.
Multiplayer does not work, constant rubber banding, i cannot hook into the starter cars on multiplayer and what kind of psycopath makes the enter button for the main menu the enter on the num pad not the standard keyboard (edit) it has become abandon ware with most engines either missing things ie. the cook 2-8-0 lacking any unit on its fuel or the 1022d2 sand dome being modeled incorrectly which i notified the devs of in may 2024, being december 2025 and no effort has ben made to rectify such problems and the fact the elua threatens you with a lawsuit if you try to mod the game and fix its issues well lets just say i'm glad that its not passing 200 players a day, only thing i mourn is my 50$, just buy another game
