INSTALLING NOTHING
A sidescroller shoot 'em up that feels straight out of the Flash era. To put it bluntly, everything in this game is mediocre. The concept and story, the visuals and graphics, the soundtrack and overall sound design, the shooting and powers, the enemies. There's nothing that catches the eye or makes it worthwhile to play. Every part of the game is unrefined and can't compete with today's standards. Not worth the time.
RADical ROACH Remastered is a side-scrolling arcade shooter developed and published by DL Softworks that takes a deliberately ridiculous concept and turns it into a fast-paced action game filled with colorful visuals, nonstop enemy encounters, and old-school arcade sensibilities. Set in a bizarre post-nuclear future, the game places players in the role of a mutated cockroach that has survived a global catastrophe and emerged with extraordinary abilities. Rather than exploring the darker implications of its setting, the game embraces humor and absurdity, delivering an experience focused entirely on action and entertainment. The story serves primarily as a backdrop for the gameplay, but it succeeds in establishing the game's unique identity. Following a devastating nuclear disaster, most life on Earth has been transformed. Among the survivors is a radioactive cockroach that must fight against hostile insect forces while navigating a dangerous world. The premise is intentionally silly, yet it gives the game a distinct personality that separates it from more traditional shoot 'em ups. The developers clearly understand the absurdity of the concept and lean into it, creating an adventure that never takes itself too seriously. Gameplay revolves around classic arcade shooting mechanics. Players guide the roach through side-scrolling levels while blasting waves of enemies that continuously appear across the screen. The controls are straightforward and responsive, making the game easy to pick up regardless of prior experience with the genre. Movement, aiming, and shooting feel intuitive, allowing players to focus on survival and enemy elimination rather than struggling with complicated systems. This accessibility is one of the game's greatest strengths. The action begins almost immediately and rarely slows down. Enemies attack from multiple directions, forcing players to remain alert and constantly reposition themselves. Success depends on quick reflexes, careful movement, and efficient use of firepower. The game embraces a traditional arcade philosophy where momentum is essential, ensuring that players are almost always engaged in combat. This constant pace helps maintain excitement throughout the campaign and prevents the gameplay from becoming stagnant. Enemy variety contributes significantly to the overall experience. The game introduces numerous insect-based adversaries, each with distinct attack patterns and behaviors. Some rush directly toward the player, while others attack from a distance or require different tactics to defeat. This variety helps keep encounters fresh and encourages players to adapt their strategies rather than relying on a single approach. While the mechanics remain relatively simple, the changing enemy compositions provide enough diversity to sustain interest. Boss encounters serve as major highlights of the adventure. These larger enemies demand greater concentration and often feature more elaborate attack patterns than standard opponents. The battles test player reflexes while providing memorable spectacles that break up the regular flow of action. Many of the bosses reflect the game's exaggerated sense of humor and visual creativity, making them some of the most entertaining moments in the campaign. The visual presentation adopts a bright, cartoon-inspired style that contrasts with the game's post-apocalyptic setting. Instead of focusing on destruction and bleak environments, the world is filled with vibrant colors, exaggerated character designs, and playful animations. The artistic direction helps establish a lighthearted atmosphere and ensures that the experience remains fun rather than oppressive. The environments themselves are varied enough to maintain visual interest throughout the adventure, with each area offering its own distinct look and feel. One of the more enjoyable aspects of RADical ROACH Remastered is its commitment to simplicity. The game never attempts to overwhelm players with complex progression systems, crafting mechanics, or extensive customization. Its focus remains firmly on shooting, dodging, and surviving. This straightforward design allows the action to remain accessible and satisfying, particularly for players who appreciate classic arcade experiences. The remastered edition also benefits from improved compatibility and modern conveniences that make it easier to enjoy on contemporary hardware. The game's relatively short length works both for and against it. On one hand, the concise campaign ensures that the action remains fresh and prevents the core mechanics from becoming repetitive. On the other hand, some players may wish there was more content to explore once the adventure concludes. The arcade-style structure encourages replayability, especially for players interested in improving their performance or unlocking achievements, but the overall experience remains fairly compact compared to larger modern shooters. Another limitation is the lack of mechanical depth. While the gameplay is enjoyable, it does not evolve dramatically over the course of the campaign. Players looking for extensive upgrade systems, multiple character builds, or highly strategic combat may find the experience somewhat limited. However, this simplicity aligns with the game's arcade roots and helps preserve its pick-up-and-play appeal. The sound design complements the action effectively. Energetic music and satisfying effects help reinforce the fast pace while maintaining the game's playful atmosphere. Audio cues provide useful feedback during combat and contribute to the overall sense of momentum. Although the soundtrack may not be particularly memorable, it fulfills its role well and supports the gameplay without becoming distracting. What ultimately makes RADical ROACH Remastered enjoyable is its willingness to embrace fun above all else. The game does not attempt to revolutionize the shoot 'em up genre or tell a profound story. Instead, it focuses on delivering colorful visuals, entertaining enemy encounters, challenging bosses, and a uniquely bizarre premise. The concept of a radioactive cockroach battling through a mutated world could easily have felt like a novelty, but the solid gameplay ensures that the idea remains engaging beyond its initial joke. RADical ROACH Remastered succeeds as a charming arcade shooter that understands its audience. Its accessible controls, energetic pacing, humorous setting, and classic design philosophy make it a pleasant experience for fans of straightforward action games. While it may not offer the complexity or longevity of larger titles in the genre, it compensates with personality and a genuine appreciation for old-school arcade fun. Rating: 6/10
