Racer Overdrive

TL;DR: Racer Overdrive is a short but charming arcade racer that delivers some good moments of gameplay reminiscent of great Arcade racer titles. Don't expect much but have a good time! I was randomly browsing steam when I decided to check the "Upcoming" tab and see what was there. I saw this game, with its full release in 12 hours. I watched the trailer and saw the pretty clear inspiration from the Burnout series with the players ramming cars off the track. That was good enough for me to Wishlist it and buy it for the $6. After 7 hours of playtime, I can say I enjoyed my time. This game has a few things going for it and going against it. For the good: The game captures a sense of speed really well; you feel fast when boosting in this game. That is imperative for an arcade racer. This game also has a pretty good list of race tracks, with some being long straight-away's and some having lots of corners or drift opportunities. The tracks themselves have interesting environments, with about one triggerable "spectacle" that occurs at a set point on every track. The initial gameplay loop of going for a career mission to then change to a side mission was fun. Also, being able to implement you own track is awesome. It made the game much more enjoyable for me to put what I wanted to listen to into the game. In terms on inspirations, I really got a vibe of Burnout with the knockout game mode and a vibe of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (NFS:HP 2 is may fav racing game) with the cop chase side missions. I think the developer did a good job of capturing a fun experience in a charming way. I also had a fun time going for all the achievements (which the developer fixed some issues with, which was appreciated). For the bad: Some of it is obvious. The game is nothing special to look at. The tracks have clipping issues. General bugs and glitches. These clipping issues would cause you to lose a race from time to time (I assume these can get fixed). A lot of the assets appear to just be placed onto the tracks. The customization is very bare bones (just changing your car's color). The stunt missions are a spectacle once but are the weakest tracks in the game in terms of keeping you engaged while racing. Most of these shortcomings are less with the core of the game and more so the polish, which I imagine are cuts that need to be made for a small development team to actually push a game. Neutral: The story is barebones, I barely followed it. The emails would reset every time you click one and would have to wait for the entire message to load. This made me just skip them entirely in terms of reading for lore. The AI is serviceable; they glitch out and crash about as much as you do, but try to bump you off the road here and there. The physics: The cars are pretty grippy but when you apply the handbrake could drift fairly well; I didn't really test the specifications between all the cars to see how that change. All in all, felt very arcade-y. Jumping ramps and into the air was fun but would slow you down a lot. This was kind of a buzzkill because you could get some killer air when going fast, but just gently float down back to earth. There's more to be said, but for $6, it is definitely worth at least trying to see if the game works for you. I went in thinking that if it were just some trash I would refund; and it definitely wasn't. It scratched that arcade-y PS2 style racing game itch I loved when I was younger. There is definitely passion and effort in this game, so I was glad to give this developer the asking rate. I recommend it!

第一次玩赛车这种类型的游戏，上手难度不难，如果商城车皮还是感觉用金币买，还有每次开始的初始位置，一直最后能不能随机，希望后面多加点道具，现在只能氮气加速撞，还有这个撞毁车辆，每次都刷新在我前面有点难受

个人觉得还是非常有意思的，在传统赛车的玩法下融合了碰撞因素，拉高爽感阈值，画面那些比不过地平线，但总共就二十来块还要啥自行车，性价比很高，很适合闲下来的时候冲一把

操作很简单，模式很多，玩起来挺解压的，手柄没有操作提示，有点难受。值得一试
