Looks good. Bad voice acting. Broken enemy laser eye or whatever that is. Check elevator, die, get valve, die, put valve on, run out, put chain on, die, put chain on again, lower elevator to climb onto ladder, die. Everytime you die, you have to do all of this over again. It was ok until this part.
This game just does so many things right. First of all, it's very refreshing to experience a walking sim/horror game that's different than the usual VHS/Bodycam style. The game feels criminally underrated. I think the main reason it is underrated is because it's a very short game. While it is short, there is so much quality and plenty of well-designed systems in place, creating a streamlined and seamless experience. It's amazing. Gameplay is completely smooth, has a lot of arcade to it for a horror game, but it fits the game really well. For the true horror fans, there's many moments in the game where things are probably not what you hope for, there's not a very strong ominous atmosphere going, it's very blunt most of the time. As for scares, there's not many, but the ones that are there, are pretty well placed. I have seen a lot of critique pointed towards the laser mechanic in the Laundry room — I have to agree, it's not a very good mechanic. It would probably have taken me unreal amounts of time if I didn't by coincidence stumble upon a review that spoilet the entire mechanic of it. The puzzles and mini-puzzles are of really good quality in Quod: Episode 1. Not gonna spoil any details, the puzzles will speak for yourself if you decide to buy the game. They are quite amazing, and constantly there's mini-puzzles in place, not requiring much effort but still activates your braincells. Something I wish was added to the game were functionality for arrow-keys when handling lockers, it gets pretty tedious with the "softlock" that they also have. It's a bit of a unintuitive design, but I have seen way worse when it comes to lockers in horror games, lol I also noticed a lot of critique around the achievements, they felt a bit hard in the first 5 minutes when you had no idea how/where, but once I got into it, everything suddenly clicked. Managed to get them all in less than 1 hour of messing around, I think it's completely fair.
TL;DR:
Quod: Episode 1 does lots of things right. It's a refreshing title in the genre, and it feels very underrated. Game is smooth and "arcadey" for a horror title. The atmosphere is not fully ominous, lots of blunt moments, has well placed scares but not many of them. Certain game mechanic in the laundry room is pretty ridiculous, but overall, puzzles and mini-puzzles are really well thought out. Design/handling of lockers could be better. While deeply entertaining - it's entertaining for all the wrong reasons. The game struggles to run properly, not having a lot in the way of optimization. Puzzles were often repetitive or nonsensical and the voice acting had me wondering if the caped crusader was going to make a sudden appearance - often having us laughing every time the character reacted (or didn't react) to something. I think between the price tag and the promise of further entries the game was more than a little disappointing. That being said, there may be a horror fan out there who will greatly enjoy the schlocky voice acting, random jump scares and nearly fever-pitch environments. I unfortunately am not that target audience. I wish the developers the best of luck and perhaps Episode 1 will be a foundation and learning experience for Episode 2.
I really wanted to like this game and give it the thumbs-up. It looks amazing, there's tons of great little details, and playing a walking sim/psyhorror game that's NOT VHS or in the 90s through present day was a wonderful breath of fresh air. The puzzles started off simple, but thought-provoking. The story also got me sucked in fast. The way the devs put in outlines of where to go for targets and objectives was IMMENSELY welcome. Then...the gamesins kicked in. You're put up against far too many cryptic clues to puzzles that will make you pause and tab out to look up a guide and/or video. Challenge is fun. Stopping because things are TOO vague is not. There's puzzles that require entry codes with basically no breadcrumbs to lead you to a solution. One room has ten codes and only one of them has relevance. Others are scattered in small segments across the environment. Exploration is fun. Repetitive backtracking is not. As others have said, the big gamesin of Quod is the punishment of where the checkpoints are placed. Don't get me wrong, checkpoints are a must. But there's too many spots where if you fail an objective, you're sent back too far and are forced to repeat what you've already done. Again, not fun. Near the end of the game and its "climax" (more on this in a moment), there's the Laundry Room. Oh boy...the Laundry Room.
It could have been designed MUCH better, but instead it's an annoying repetitive death room where you're given next to NO clue how to pass it. The playthrough video I had to watch for help showed the host/player having to do this room probably half a dozen times or more. I don't want devs to hold my hand, but for Pete's sake, you have to put out more thoughtful hints. FYI: to get past the laser in the Laundry Room, watch the alien device thing VERY carefully. When it's blue, it's safe to move. When it goes red, you MUST REMAIN 100% STILL until it reverts to blue, and by 100% still I mean TAKE YOUR HANDS OFF THE KEYBOARD AND MOUSE. It will also help to try and turn your POV at the alien device to ensure you see the color change.
And the end? Frustrating considering the short length of the game that only feels long because of the padding, repetitiveness, and the need to have to do things over and over. It's never a good thing when I can't wait for a game to be done because of how frustrating it gets the more you play through it.
