I went into this curious about quantum computing with some light dabbling in theory but no hands-on experience. I have a CS background, but am by no means well familiarized with this newly emerging side of it. QO is hard. It's really, really hard. It presents itself as having no prerequisites; I'm not sure I agree, but I'm also not sure they would help at all anyway. You can have a lot of classical computation intuition and understanding of the linear algebra that relates to quantum gates and even some level of grasp on what a qubit is and the infinite states it can occupy, and none of it will save you from the reality. Finding a quantum circuit that fits a desired pattern is just hard, and knowledge of what you're looking at only makes it more obvious how hard this really is. This game does not water down the challenge ahead. The simulator provided is as close to the real thing as you can ask for on a classical home computer. The problems are real, and if you want to succeed, you will have to approach them as the real deal. I sunk over 20 hours into this in less than a week after getting it (while having a normal full-time job), not including supplemental study time. I have become obsessed. I haven't stopped thinking about strategies for quantum algorithm discovery since I started. I have not come up with any good answers. I have not become disheartened; I remain motivated to learn more, to grasp the ideas at play, and to figure out SOME way to manipulate them. There is a PvP mode where you are attempting to reverse custom quantum algorithms other people have designed. I have no idea how to win at it. I have no idea how anyone wins at it. I have watched lectures, I have read through the game's discord server, I've cracked open a textbook on the subject. I still haven't figured it out, but it still keeps pulling me back in anyway. This game will challenge you, no matter your background. It will come off as inscrutable. If you want to understand what it's putting down, you will be bashing your head against the wall it welcomes you to stand in front of. Yes, this is a positive review. I want to understand this, and it keeps inviting me to come back to it. That might not be for everyone. But if this is a topic you're remotely interested in, here is the path to grappling with it firsthand. Thank you, Quarks.
As someone with a fair depth of knowledge about quantum stuff, I am so amazed at how the developer has managed to materialise the truly mind boggling features of qubits into a very visual puzzle game. On the other hand, I am equal parts vexed by the distinct lack of edge my education in this field gives me at solving the puzzles ! It just goes to show that quantum stuff is counterintuitive for everyone, and is therefore an equal opportunity supplier of confusion. To reiterate. You do not need any kind of scientific background in order to play this, but you do need to be ready to face some challenging puzzles that require you to build intuition progressively. If you do want to delve more into the science of it, the game comes with tons of actual documentation on the subject, which is well worth reading. A solid recommendation for anyone who enjoys abstract logic puzzles.
As much as I commend the intentions of the developers, unfortunately in its current state I could not recommend this game as a teaching aid. It is likely just going to frustrate people. "Runs on a unique quantum simulator that turns multi-qubit math into intuitive visuals" There is nothing intuitive about the visuals. At the early levels, they obfuscate relatively simple complex number operations. As the complexity of the problems increase, they are entirely unintelligible. Sure, vectors and matrices can be overwhelming at times while you are learning - but the additional noise and movement doesn't help with understanding, they just make for a pretty distraction. To be successful in solving these puzzles you will need to arrive with some advanced math knowledge. That in itself would be fine, if it were not that you also have to learn the language of the game itself on top, and figure out how to translate between the two. There's something about the way that this game presents itself, in the narration and level descriptions - like a young science student trying hard to use big words and sound smart. This language extends to the in game documentation, explanations and tutorials. If the intention is to improve accessibility this is probably the biggest target for improvement.
Early rating to spread it across steam while the sale is still active Loving it, it's a brilliant puzzle game. Unlike the actual study of it, it's Intuitive as said, easily translatable to irl terms ect. It's actually kind of amazing. So with that it's a must, especially if you like zach games (although you don't get to code) I'm unsure about the scoring. It may be based on just unlocking all gates, then coming back to x level, but they do say it's a mess and may be changed in the next update. So I wouldn't focus too much on the number at the moment. If you have it on 8x speed and 1 cycle fails before you pause or slow it down, then you lose points and have to restart anyway, kinda bad imo. Game? Confident recommendation
Approachable, cleverly fun, and educational. Would love a Mac port if possible, this kind of game would be great on that platform!
Interesting game. Some concepts are hard for me to grasp but the explanations are clear and the difficulty is going up slowly so you can catch up with the pace easily.

Love this game. I havn't been this engaged in anything in a long time.
Will probably go back to uni at some point in the next couple of years, specifically because this game reminded me how fun REALLY REALLY DIFFICULT physics is.
