DISCLAIMER: I initially brushed this game off too fast and refunded it on steam. However, I felt bad afterwards for not giving it an honest try and remembered that I had the game on GoG. I've since played through most of the game on GoG and felt like writing a review here too. With that out of the way... Quake 4 feels very much like ID's answer to Half-Life. The game starts off really slow and the textures did not age nearly as well as Half-Life but once it gets going its actually a pretty good ride and some portions of the game as well as the shield mechanics feel kinda like early Halo games. I think its a very interesting game since its really nothing like the other Quake games at all, besides some loosely connected thematic elements from Quake II. It really plays and feels like a weird cross between Half-Life and Halo CE which is kinda cool. The beginning is a little boring, but once you get past the exposition and find a few more weapons (about 15-20 mins into it) the game actually really shines. The vehicles and boss fights are pretty cool as well. I will say though this game has several pretty intense horror sections with lots of gross-out mutilation and other body horror stuff so absolutely keep that in mind if you're not a fan of that stuff. Those portions don't last too long but it would be dishonest to say that they weren't a huge part of the game. Quake has always been a gory franchise but ID kinda took it to a whole new level here, haha. I don't think I like this game better than Half-Life or Halo CE but its enjoyable and a pretty interesting direction for a Quake game. Kinda wish it were possible to rescue more of the friendly NPCs. << Potential Spoilers >> but often it feels like the game just kills them off for fun and shock factor which kinda makes you numb to it since some sections of the game kill off minor characters before you can feel any sort of emotion towards them. I kinda preferred the early game portions in this regard since the other characters didn't just feel like cheap expendable trash and had enough personality to be interesting. If you like gory boomer shooters with some half-life 1 inclinations, you will probably like this game.

This game is so underrated and overhated It's truly the black sheep of the franchise yet I still love it

It's not bad but it's also not great. Very adequately made. Raven brought some cool militarism to the franchise that Quake 2 hinted at but didn't follow through with, probably because of the Halo franchise which does it much better, so I wish they had gone much further with it. It was worth the $5 on sale I guess but if you watch a review or playthrough on YouTube and don't really feel it you're not missing a whole lot by skipping it. It ran great for me except sometimes the upgraded lightning gun froze the game up for several seconds. I thought it had crashed but eventually it freed itself up.
