Q&A: A Light-Roasted Romance -

This was just a slog to read through. The only thing I really liked was PB, the little robot. The music tracks are just the same 5-10 second loop on repeat. There's just nothing to recommend here. Trying to replay it to make other choices/view different endings is also painful as there is no saving/loading, no text skipping of any kind, and the game doesn't always advance until its ready to, making for lots of unnecessary waiting even when trying to spam the spacebar.
Q&A: A Light-Roasted Romance is not a game, it's an e-book/CYOA ("Visual novel" is another term that writers use when trying to disguise an e-book as a game) that's been launched on Steam as a game, despite not being one. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which presents the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This is a short demo e-book set in a cafe where readers can choose to read the story from the perspective of a robot or a customer. Really pushing the boundaries of literature here. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'd be published authors and this would be on shelves in bookstores, and they wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam), and you have your average Steam e-book. While this is free, it's bad, and badly written. A basic requirement for me to recommend games to people is that they have to be games... and this Choose Your Own Adventure e-book isn't a game at all. My gaming rig is not a Kindle. If you're on Steam but not looking for games, but are looking for free, high quality, well written e-books, Project Gutenberg has literally thousands, all much better than this.

I feel like this visual novel would be better served by including the option to hasten the text because I aged five years in the time it took to complete one playthrough. Actually I *felt* like I had aged five years and that's even worse because the sheer mental stamina required to finish this was daunting. Your story isn't terrible. The artwork and the characters are fine (the robot is adorable) but making the reader wait so long in between "pages" does a disservice to your product. Even someone with the patience of a saint would lose interest.
The "choices" just lead back to the same results. The writing is barely passable. Not worth your time.
Q&A: A Light-Roasted Romance is a charming romance game with a sweet storyline and adorable characters. The narrative flows smoothly, but some mechanics could be improved. Overall, it's a delightful experience for fans of light-hearted games.
Though the story progresses a bit fast and sometimes it feels a little half-brewed this is a lovely cute little gem. It's short but has two endearingly (socially) clumsy characters as well as a one of the cutest metal side characters. Plus the artwork is just eye candy. Also I love that both Astrid and Q use they/them pronouns. This game makes for a wholesome short experience :)
I have positive feelings about this overall. While the plot itself is not very substantial, the character designs and art style are very visually pleasing, especially the use of color. I think this idea would have been better explored through a medium such as a webcomic where the focus could be shifted from the narrative to just seeing these characters and these settings operate on a day to day basis. I personally am a fan of urban/contemporary fantasy, and a coffee shop style potion store could work as a decent backdrop for a slice of life style story. Its unlikely we'll see more of these characters since Megan Kallas now works full time as a design coordinator at DreamWorks Animation, and I am very glad to see their talents put to good use in a workplace they probably enjoy. *creak creak*
