You play as a cowboy, who is going to steal treasure form a wizards castle. The aim of each level is to get to a crystal, and once you've nabbed it the level ends. To do this the cowboy has a gun that can fire various bullets, and each will affect blocks in the environment in a different way. However, there's two types of blocks: gray and brown. Only the gray ones can be manipulated, and only once per block. Ammo for the gun is deliberately limited, and is placed around the level - meaning you have to figure out how to get to it in the first place. Levels will have objects like spikes, saws, lazers, electrical blocks, and you can also fall off the level to your death. Clearly this wizard takes his castles home security very seriously! The cowboy only has his standard limited jump, and then everything else must be done through altering the environment. The puzzles start off straightforward, but after the tenth (or so) they really start being much more tricky and devious. There are 64 levels in total. Whilst those first ten are about learning how the most basic ammo types work, everything after that pushes those rules to a mind boggling degree. Particularly once ammo that affects gravity appears, and you have to start thinking in somewhat more surreal terms than before. They also introduce some situations where you have to alter a block midway through a jump, or a fall. So not only is it about using logic, but there's also a measure of twitch gaming too. The game constantly finds new ways to mix up challenges, and push your spatial awareness. The puzzles are all great challenges, and nicely paced in how the difficulty escalates. The ammo types are introduced slowly, giving you time to learn their nuances before a new type is made available, and the application becomes enhanced. There's around ten in total, and each one always adds something interesting into the mix. I won't list all the effects here, as the game leaves it you to find out what each one does, and instant restarts cut out any frustration of experimenting with the end result. Levels can simply be cunning, or cunningly simple - after the tenth level they've been quite tricky, and very satisfying to solve. They don't take that long to finish (less than a minute when you know what you're doing), though they do (for me at least) take much longer to crack the solution! The controls are very slick, and the collision detection is pixel perfect. Overall this is a thoroughly accomplished and polished game. I can't deny there was three or four levels where I needed a guide, so maybe I'm a bit slow on the uptake. It took me 15 hours to do all 64 levels, and they were extremely satisfying. The game is fairly inexpensive and superb for the cost, and I have no hesitation giving it a perfect review. It's innovative, challenging, really well done, very enjoyable, glitch free and great value. SCORE: 10 / 10
First of all the aesthetic is pretty cool. At least personally I dig the old school DOS game look. And if you also like puzzle games that give your noodle a good workout, I can highly recommend this game. The mechanics are interesting and original. The titular "puzzgun" has several abilities that make up the puzzles, and the abilities are mixed and matched in really clever ways. The difficulty ramps up nicely. I think it took me well over an hour to beat the first 21 levels. It's real chill to just sit down and try to figure out which blocks to shoot with which bullets in which order.
Very well made game! Cleverly designed puzzles. You Will be addicted to this!
Overall very simple, but challenging puzzle game. The first impression is nice, I liked the old school graphics and the music goes well with the game. The difficulty starts to increase gradually and you'll get introduced to new items as the game progresses. This makes it easy to learn as it lets you figure things out on the fly. The fairly unique idea and great level desings makes it fresh and fun to play. After 30 played levels I'm enjoying the game even more cause of the challenge. You don't have to be a fan of puzzle games to try it out.
Well designed game with a unique mechanic.
Very nice puzzle-platformer, with relaxing music and challenging levels. Thumb up! https://youtu.be/d8FztU8lOwo
Great puzzle platformer with unique gameplay and cool music. I just finished 21 levels but I can see where this is going, the puzzle elements are briliantly done. One thing I dont like is the platforming,it is clumsy and takes away from overall exsperince, just hope it doesnt get in the way later in the game.
Veey good! Nice idea in this game. Puzzles are great!
A very challenging puzzle platformer with emphasis on the puzzle.
PuzzGun is a puzzle platformer, where you use a special gun to solve puzzles. The gameplay is pretty unique, said special gun is capable of changing grey blocks' properties depending on the ammo type you use, for example you can change a block into a spring that can bounce you up, delete blocks, freeze them so they can be affected by gravity and can be pushed and so on, and I haven't seen anything like this before (I do know there are Portal games where you use a portal gun, but it's not quite the same). The game has a decent variety, with new ammo types, and the last set of levels introduces a neat gimmick of a switch that switches grey and brown blocks. The story is pretty basic, you're a treasure hunter who had aquired aformentioned gun to find a treasure in wizard's castle. And that's it, the story isn't a focus of this game, rather it's level design. The puzzle difficulty can feel a little inconsistent, some of them can have massive breaks, skipping majority of the puzzle, which I don't really mind, it does feel nice to outsmart the puzzle, and it does open up potential for speedrunning. Others, I had to look up a playthorough (the only thing I found was a speedrun actually, did I mention this game has speedrunning potential?). The in-game hint system isn't particularly helpful, every 4 minutes you unlock a step towards solving a puzzle, however by the time these 4 minutes pass, you likely have figured out half the puzzle already. I think a way this could've been improved is let the player choose which hint to unlock, rather than having them all in a linear order. Or simply not have a hint system and offer official solutions via guides. That being said, for the most part this game isn't that difficult, maybe because of aformentioned skips, I don't really know. The graphics look pretty decent, I noticed that the look of the blocks is randomized, offering visual variety every time you restart a puzzle, and even then, the backgrounds look fairly detailed. There's even a little touch where grey blocks accumulate snow as the time goes on in the last set of levels, which I think is neat. The main character themself looks pretty small and kinda minimalistic, but is well animated. The music is pretty calm and ambient, you wouldn't expect a tense music while thinking of how to solve a puzzle, which is fitting. Overall, I do think this is a rather neat puzzle game, it offers unique gameplay and some clever moments. I recommend you check out this little hidden gem.
