Colors, characters and creatures all alike are like their purpose was to be as cute as humanly possible. Then you actually play and realize that there is much more to this game than simply being cute. Buried underneath the cutsie adorableness there is a really great puzzle game waiting to be found similar to the likes of old school puzzle games. Winning in this game requires you to kill all of the enemies on the screen by pushing blocks around. As easy as that sounds, it most definitely can get tough. You have to really be strategic with your approach where you will push blocks because they move all the way across the screen until they hit a wall, which can very very rapidly cause you to find yourself in a tough place to get out of due to no blocks being push-able. This dilemma will quickly result in you having to destroy blocks caught up against others. Crushing blocks may seem like not a big deal, but there is a nice little match 3 system to get little perks, like bombs, depending on the blocks you match. Matching 3 becomes important for scores. Not only is the strategy of how to push the blocks important, but you also have a timer really keeping the fire lit under you to keep moving quickly. The mixture of these elements creates a kind of tense scenario that is very satisfying to work through. Graphically speaking, this game takes a pixelated art style approach, so this game can run very easy on a super wide range of machines making it a great puzzle game for just about anyone in that regard. The music and sound effects are both very pleasing and suiting to accompany the visual style adding to the cute appeal of the game. Pushy and Pully was also developed with longevity in mind. To keep you replaying despite beating the game, you have a ranking system here that will have you coming back for more to try and beat your old records and to really hit those high scores. Once you start really dissecting the puzzles to optimize score but still to beat the clock, the game can get pretty intense. Pushy and Pully is definitely a game that you can play in short bursts or for long time frames, while enjoying every moment. There is a lot to offer here and if you’re a fan of old puzzle games with a bomberman-like feel to how the game moves, you may just find a lot of joy in this cute little game. I'm very disappointed..... One of my best childhood memories involves my parents and videogames: we went to the beach for a walk, when we saw an arcade (yeah, it was that time when arcade were still around). My mom asked me if I wanted to play, so we entered the place. My father was never interested in games, but wanted to see me happy. My mother instead is a gamer, she likes point and click games and puzzles. I immediately noticed Three Wonders, a 3-in-1 arcade game that maybe not many of you know. Basically you insert the coin and you can choose between a platformer, an horizontal shootemup and an action puzzle, all great full-fledges games. The puzzle game was called Don't Pull. I was already familiar with the game, so we entered and I played while they were watching me. I was so pumped up I beat the game while they were encouraging me. This still is a vivid memory for me and I keep that dear to my heart. SO.... When I found a game on Steam that wanted to emulate the same feel of DP (at the point of being a carbon copy of that concept) I was immediately interested, so I waited for a price drop not being sure if this game could have been a spiritual successor or a failure. Well, it's not a failure as a game, but as a successor to Don't Pull surely is. BELIEVE ME, SEARCH FOR THREE WONDERS, PLAY IT IN SOME WAY, and you'll see what I mean. Push and Pully lacks everything that made Don't Pull great: good control movements, fast gameplay, interesting design of levels, interesting enemies and patterns, collectibles, secrets, humor. Moving is frustrating, the player is slow, and the time the character moves from a square to another, your hitbox still remains in the starting square, and this is a beginner's error that I also made on my first game as designer. Enemies are boring, some of them have unfair movements and infuriating moves, like the ones that jump on casual points of the already small and full of obstacles maps. Or the ones that fires fast and hard to see projectiles. Add to this that the character has the most slow walk and weird hitbox... very frustrating! Not hard, just frustrating. Sometimes you will feel that enemies and blocks were placed on the maps casually in number and placement, and this shows when you die many times in the first seconds of the latter levels. I really miss planning strategies and trying to speedrun Don't Pull. The flow of that game is just... superior! Also, bosses... not much to say for every one of them but the last one: while they are a cute addition and a way to break the monotony, they are extremely easy and monotonous. The last one instead is the worst final boss I've seen in years. He will occupy a large part of the screen, while firing projectile with questionable hitboxes and, on the second phase, it will split in three. Imagine doing all of this on a timer! You'll die because there weren't alternative, a lot. I like hard games, but not unfair. I don't want to beat the game now. Blocks mechanic is interesting but nothing special, you can just end the level by pushing blocks at random at enemies ignoring combination of bloks. The star rating is not clear, I think using the blocks combination is important for the score; however, I lost interest in wasting time to get 3 star on levels by using clever combinations. Also, maybe it's me, but didn't work majority of time to get me 3 stars. Pros: +Pixel art and animations are cute and colorful +Nice enemies variety +Bosses +"Puzzle only" levels are an interesting addition +Cute story Cons: -Clunky and slow controls -Confusionary or absent level design -Infuriating enemies -Last boss is the worse last boss I played in years. Review based on single player mode, but after all I enjoyed play Don't Pull alone majority of time. How could a game from 1991 be better than a one from this year???
Pushy and Pully in Blockland
Steuerung
A lot of fun with a friend! Me and my boyfriend completed it in one sitting in about 3 hours! Totally recommend if you cant get it in the sale. You'll get a load more play time if you go hard for the three star rating on every level. I say get it and support the team~
