Difficulty : 2.5/5 (A bit Hard) Global : 1.5/5 (Decent) Curator page : Anokturnus Push The Cat with WASD is a short puzzle game in which you need to guide a cat on a flag. At first sight, you obviously think about Baba is You; and so I thought it would really be similar. Well, it's not really the case. Each level has sentences written in it, and you can move some of the letters in a direction. W only moves up, S only moves down etc; and your goal is to setup these letters to eventually push the cat on the flag. So you're not really playing with words, they are just there for the aesthetic aspect and every movable letter can be replaced by an arrow. The puzzles are all about spatial reasoning, and that's the kind of puzzle I'm not good at. Fortunately, the game is well-balanced. You follow a small emotional story and a good amount of levels are free and only there to tell that story. It gets quite hard sometimes though, I think the difficulty is on point. There are also very hard levels in a bonus chapter called challenge mode, and yes it's very challenging. That's a shame, I really, really like when games push the difficulty extremely high and I can only praise the devs for this bonus chapter. But these levels just feel impossible for me, the few mechanics of the game make everything so confusing that I don't really have fun trying to solve them. Push The Cat with WASD has some good ideas, the story mode is fun and you'll have a good time pushing the cat. It's just unfortunate that, at least for me, the challenge levels feel more like a punishment.
Clever games curator score 7/10. Really novel puzzle game played in a grid world of text. Letters move when you select them, and using this you figure out how to push the cat or the goal together. So it's not at all a word game, more of a spatial reasoning puzzle. But the word "theme" adds a lot of entertainment and clever obfuscation of the solutions, since there end up being lots of extraneous "pushers" that only serve to distract. So often puzzle games consist of a set of elements each needing to be used in turn, making the solutions rote and obvious, and this design gets around that elegantly. A++ for that. Meanwhile, the difficulty level is not punishing at all. So you get to genuinely think for a minute on each level, but never get a headache. I'm really impressed. UPDATE: Having now played thru the entire "story", I remain just as impressed with the game as before. It really deserves more visibility than Steam seems to have gifted it. BUT, I continue to feel there is one significant design flaw holding the game back: You have to carefully scan the grid for letters than can move (all letters adjacent to the S key on a keyboard). This gets tiresome. You can switch to showing arrows instead of text which is much easier to play but completely eliminates the joy of the text-world design. The dev desperately needs to redesign the tileset so that both the direction and the text are visible simultaneously. Like this review?
Push the Cat with WASD is good, it is cute, fun, and heartwarming and it is an absolute shame that the game has as few reviews as it does at the moment. So Push the Cat with WASD works exactly as the title tells you; you use the letters of the messages on the screen to move the cat WASD for Up, Left. Down, Right and you can use the QEZC keys to move at angles. Along with this, there are two other mechanics like SHIFT to swap letters with others of the opposite direction or swap the cat and goal, and the mechanic of using Crtl-C and/or Ctrl-X to move objects to the Ctrl-V’s location(s). These mechanics are used wonderfully to create engaging, unique, and entertaining puzzles. Along with this, the developer added some very nice quality-of-life features for players to use like the three different types of ways to represent the letters that you can move to help with clarity, which not only adds some difficulty customization but also makes the game more playable to those who are non-English speaking. There is also the ever-useful hint button and a button that just gives you the solution altogether. Although all of these quality-of-life features make the game easier, I think that is okay because to me the best part of the game is the story and it makes it so anyone can experience it all. My only gripe with the gameplay is that it took me a minute to make sense of everything which felt frustrating, but seeing as how the frustration was such a short period of time that it was hardly an issue. I must say, I was not expecting the story to be as good as it is. The story is told purely through the text on the screen and a lot of the time the writing is very basic, but the story is told very effectively and the elementary word choice plays into the assumption that animals would speak simply, so it works out perfectly. I won’t spoil anything about it, but I really did like it. I thought that it was very sweet and it made me want to just go and hug my cat (which I did). The story pushed me to finish the game in one sitting and that is a good sign, I must say that I am very impressed The sound design is really good. As far as sound effects go, they are extremely simple (clicks and dings) and they never wore on me nor did they really stand out, but they felt fitting. Where the game really shines though is the music. I really liked the soundtrack; all the pieces (except for the music during the challenge levels) are gentle and emotionally provocative, and most important of all, they are all really good. Looking at the credits it is gathered from a sound/music library that you can purchase from, but that does not change the fact that it is good music and was well selected for the feelings the game tries to provide, and the song for the challenge levels is an absolute banger though it feels separate from the rest of the game. Also, I would be amiss if I did not mention that this game does, in fact, have a dedicated meow button, and it is cute and amazing. Great sound design; no complaints at all. However, I do wish that I knew what the songs used are Shazam didn’t find them and I would like to get them somehow so I could listen to them freely. :) Lastly, the graphics are extremely simple, but they are stylized well, are extremely effective at conveying information, and are fitting for the game. However, my biggest gripe about the game does come from the art though. The cutscene art is not great, I am especially not a fan of real-life backgrounds mixed with anime characters and the filters on the pictures feel weird, it is just so disjointed. Also, the effects used on a transition or two look straight out of 2004 and not in a good way. That being said, you don’t see it very often and only briefly. Overall, I like the graphics for the game, not the cutscenes. This game deserves more love than it has gotten from its initial release, that may be because of the high price tag for what the game is, but I think that it is a good experience and it is worth grabbing. It is short, fun, and has a good story. As always, I am grateful when devs decide to give me games to review
and I am excited to see what their hinted at visual novel will be like.
This is a good puzzle game and if you are a fan of that you will have a good time with Push the Cat with WASD.
The initial concept during gamejam version was fun enough. Glad author expanded the game with new mechanics, story and many more levels!
