PuPaiPo Space Deluxe

[h1]A Quest for Space Pizza [/h1] PuPaiPo Space Deluxe is a SHMUP arcade game developed by BolHut. It’s their second game released on Steam after You Died but a Necromancer Revived You. The story of this game is that you’re fighting through waves of enemies and bosses to get some legendary space pizza. I guess they must have found a way to make pizza stay fresh in a vacuum. The main game mode sees you tackle five different areas that each last 90 seconds and are finished with a boss fight. The fifth zone is just the final boss. Once you’ve beaten this mode for the first time, you unlock the Boss Rush and Survival modes. Personally, I enjoyed the two unlockable modes a lot more than the main game. They’re both pretty self-explanatory. [h1]Positives: [/h1] [list][*]I like the art, it’s pretty cute. [*]The gameplay itself is enjoyable. I’m not the biggest fan of the SHMUP genre, but I did enjoy this one. [*]The main game mode is fun, but the two modes you unlock from beating it are even better. I think Boss Rush is particularly good. The two other modes also have new pilots for you to unlock, which is nice. [*]If you find the game a bit too hard, you have a certain numbers of ‘Continues’ available to you in the main mode (how many you get is dependent on the difficulty level). Using them does incur a point penalty, but it’s helpful either way. There’s also auto-aiming if you struggle with the aiming. Both these combined make it much more accessible to more casual players. [*]There are four difficulty levels in total, the Hard and Ultra levels offer quite a challenge. [*]I thought the bosses were well-designed and fun to fight. [*]It can be played with up to three other people either locally or online using remote play together. [*]I feel that $5 is a pretty reasonable price for what’s on offer.[/list] [h1]Neutral:[/h1] [list][*]I found the game itself and the controls took a bit of getting used to. [/list] [h1]Negatives:[/h1] [list][*]There are some cool weapon powerups but they don’t spawn very often (or at all in boss rush) and they don’t last particularly long when you do get them. I would have liked more drops and for them to last longer, because they’re significantly more fun to use than the default weapon. [/list] [h1]Verdict:[/h1] I ended up really enjoying PuPaiPo. It’s a cute little SHMUP game that’s accessible for casual players, but can also offer quite a challenge for more hardcore players. The Boss Rush and Survival modes are particularly enjoyable. I’d definitely recommend this to SHMUP fans or fans of the arcade genre in general.
