7/10 Kill monsters, help birds, save the world in this turn-based puzzler. What is it: A turn-based, grid-based puzzler in which you play as sister/brother Prune and Milo. While camping with their family, they accidentally fall into a cave and have to find their way back home. Room after room they must collect gems, defeat monsters, and reach the exit. Although there is only one avatar in the level, you can switch at any time between Prune (bow, ranged attacks) and Milo (sword, more powerful but only close attacks). They will soon be joined by Christopher the owl (fly over one gap) and Laetitia the penguin (swim in water). These characters are a nice way to introduce new mechanics. Normally in puzzle games the new mechanics just appear in the game as you unlock new levels, but this game tries to make it natural through storytelling. And there is a lot of story in this game, about every 10 levels there’s a special kind of level, either a boss battle, or a new character is introduced, or you visit a village. It’s not just an abstract puzzle game, it feels more like an adventure or RPG. It’s a well made game for children. So, what does a level look like? It’s mostly figuring out when to hit monsters and when to move out of their range. Each monster has some HP, a movement range, and a turn counter, for example a monster moves every 5 turns, needs 2 hits with the sword or 3 with the bow, and moves 4 tiles. Some attack before moving, some after moving, some have melee attacks, some ranged. You have to figure out if you have time to destroy an enemy with the bow or get closer and hit it with the sword, or if it’s better to move out of its range for now and try again after it moves. It’s not that hard to figure out what works and what doesn’t, and with the unlimited undo you’re free to experiment and try again a different strategy if you take damage. Monsters are hidden and spawn when you get in the right spot, only a few at a time, so you don’t have to worry about the later monsters, but do expect to fight two or three waves in each level. And while there are things to push around, this isn’t a sokoban, they’re mostly there to help you keep the monsters away. The levels start small and easy, but while they do get big, they never get difficult. Each level has a special blue gem to collect (as well as smaller gems), and you are awarded 3 stars, one for finishing under the allowed moves, one for defeating all monsters, and one for not taking any damage. To properly finish the game you need to collect almost all blue gems, but the stars are just for your own satisfaction, which makes it a good choice both for experienced puzzle lovers looking to perfect every level, and for novices just strolling through. One thing about the movement counter, it is not expecting a very strict optimal solution, all levels have at least 2 extra moves, and many have a lot more slack. Overall, I think this is a nice and easy puzzle game with an adventure feel, with a nice story and good presentation, a good choice for children and puzzle enthusiasts. How hard is it: Easy, especially if you’re not trying to perfect every level. How long is it: 75 levels, but some are mostly story with no puzzles, and 3 of them are longer boss battles with unique mechanics. 4-8 hours, levels cannot be skipped, but you can always solve them however you can and come back later to perfect them. Level design: Decent for this type of game, they’re not great challenging puzzles, but they are pleasant, varied, and without obvious flaws, well suited for beginners. I enjoyed solving them all. Quality: Good, but needs a bit of polishing. Undo, good level select. Good controls, works with keyboard and controllers, works on the Steam Deck, but controls are not configurable, and while some controls are displayed on screen, there is not even a dialog where you can see the controls. Almost no settings, just two audio sliders. Cloud saving and progress/completion achievements. Feels fast and responsive, doesn’t hog the CPU. Good looking pixel graphics, nice music, just a few bugs encountered. Worth the price: A bit expensive for the playtime offered, but it makes up for it in quality. Most positive aspect for me: I liked the boss battles. Most negative aspect for me: Too easy for my taste. What would make it better: Multiple profiles. A shortcut for restarting the level. Configurable controls, or at least a screen showing the controls. More settings, at least a fullscreen toggle and disabling screenshake. Faster movement, faster text display.
Prune & Milo is a turn-based puzzle adventure developed by Flocons Studio and published by JanduSoft that blends grid-based puzzle mechanics with light combat elements and a charming pixel-art aesthetic. The game follows the story of two siblings whose quiet camping trip takes an unexpected turn when Milo accidentally falls into a deep cavern. Determined to help his brother find a way out, Prune ventures underground, and what begins as a simple rescue quickly develops into a much larger adventure involving mysterious caves, strange creatures, and a looming threat to the world itself. Although the narrative remains relatively lighthearted, it provides enough context to frame the journey and gives players a reason to explore the puzzle-filled environments that make up the game’s core experience. The gameplay structure is based on a grid system where every movement the player makes counts as a turn. This means that both the player and environmental elements operate according to a predictable rhythm, allowing players to carefully analyze each situation before committing to an action. Early stages introduce the fundamentals by presenting simple puzzles that require pushing objects, navigating around obstacles, and finding a path to the exit. These opening levels function as a tutorial for the mechanics, gradually teaching players how movement and positioning affect the puzzle layout. The deliberate pacing encourages players to think strategically, as every step can influence the outcome of the puzzle. As the adventure continues, the gameplay expands beyond basic navigation puzzles. Enemies begin appearing throughout the levels, introducing an element of tactical decision-making that changes the way players approach each challenge. Enemy movement is tied to the turn system, meaning that creatures often move or attack after a specific number of player actions. This mechanic forces players to balance puzzle solving with combat awareness, carefully planning their movements to avoid danger while still working toward the level’s objective. Timing becomes a crucial element, and players must often consider how their actions will affect enemy behavior several turns ahead. One of the most interesting features of Prune & Milo is the way it incorporates both protagonists into the gameplay. Once the two siblings reunite during the adventure, players gain the ability to use their unique abilities to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies. Milo specializes in close combat using a sword, allowing him to deal with threats directly when necessary. Prune, on the other hand, uses a bow that can attack enemies from a distance. The contrast between melee and ranged abilities introduces new strategic possibilities, as certain situations are better handled by one character than the other. Managing these abilities becomes an important part of solving the more complex puzzles later in the game. The game contains more than seventy handcrafted levels that gradually introduce new mechanics and environmental challenges. Some puzzles focus on manipulating objects or activating switches to open new paths, while others require players to carefully navigate traps or use environmental hazards against enemies. The gradual introduction of new puzzle elements keeps the experience engaging, as players are constantly encouraged to adapt their strategies and think creatively about how different mechanics interact. As the difficulty increases, puzzles become more intricate and demand greater foresight in order to reach the exit efficiently. In addition to completing each level, the game includes optional objectives that reward players for mastering the puzzles. These challenges may involve finishing a level within a limited number of moves, defeating enemies without taking damage, or locating hidden collectibles placed throughout the environment. Completing these additional tasks requires a deeper understanding of the game’s mechanics and encourages players to replay levels in order to improve their performance. This system adds replay value by giving players extra goals beyond simply reaching the end of the stage. Visually, Prune & Milo embraces a vibrant pixel-art style that captures the spirit of classic adventure games while still feeling modern and polished. The characters are animated with expressive sprites, and the environments feature colorful details that make the underground world feel lively and mysterious. Each area has its own visual identity, helping the journey feel varied as players progress deeper into the cave system and encounter new settings. The art style also supports the gameplay by keeping the grid layout clear and easy to read during puzzle solving. The audio design complements the visuals with a cheerful and atmospheric soundtrack that enhances the sense of adventure. The music changes subtly depending on the environment and situation, helping establish a relaxed but engaging tone throughout the game. Sound effects for movement, combat, and environmental interactions provide satisfying feedback that reinforces the turn-based rhythm of the gameplay. Together, the sound and visuals create an inviting atmosphere that makes exploring the game’s puzzle-filled world enjoyable. Despite its strengths, the game does have a few limitations. Because it relies heavily on grid-based puzzles, the pacing can sometimes feel repetitive during longer play sessions. Players unfamiliar with Sokoban-style puzzle games may also find some of the later levels particularly demanding, as they require careful planning and multiple attempts to solve efficiently. Additionally, the story remains fairly simple and primarily serves as a backdrop for the puzzles rather than a deeply developed narrative. Even with these minor drawbacks, Prune & Milo succeeds in delivering a satisfying puzzle adventure that balances strategy, exploration, and light combat mechanics. The combination of thoughtful puzzle design, character abilities, and charming presentation creates an experience that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Players who enjoy methodical puzzle solving and gradually mastering complex systems will likely find the game rewarding. Overall, Prune & Milo stands out as a well-crafted indie puzzle adventure that blends classic grid-based gameplay with creative mechanics and a delightful pixel-art world. Its gradual difficulty curve, varied puzzle design, and engaging character abilities provide a strong foundation for a thoughtful and enjoyable experience. While it may not have the scope of larger adventure titles, its clever design and charming atmosphere make it a memorable entry in the puzzle genre. Rating: 7/10
