I actually like DOS platform games, and I gave up on this after a few minutes. 1) The level design is unfair. There were multiple times just within the first level where you needed to fall off a cliff where you can't see the bottom to progress, but there were enemies at the bottom. As a bonus, long falls will daze you. 2) Your life ticks down over time rather rapidly; this will be a significant source of (unavoidable) damage. 3) The hit detection is poor. 4) There's very little new or interesting here to compensate for these problems. There are better games out there.
I was lucky enough to have grown up with a dad who had loved computers during the golden age of DOS gaming and even earlier. However, most of my favorite games were a mix of DOS & NES games though my NES was stolen so I was only left with playing DOS games through most of my childhood. It was probably a good thing because I may never have discovered gems like this game. This game does take most of its inspiration from Wonderboy in Monsterland but in some ways does it better. The music is top notch and gameplay hits the sweetspot for me, Difficult. If you are looking for a true sidescroller from the early 90's to go with your Commander Keen or Duken Nukem 1 & 2 collection then add this to it and support the guys who are keeping these games alive on steam.
Can't even start up the actual game. Just stuck on the boot up menu. Who cares anyway this game looks way too old.
NEVER RECOMMENDED - it comes with a COMPLETELY UNCONFIGURED DOSBOX SETUP. That means you will have to painstakingly convert your long Steam directory path into a 8+3 one (the DOSBOX it comes with does not support long file names), mount it, change to it, INSTALL it (it will not start unless you run the configuration / setup thing bundled with the installer at least once) and THEN you can start the game without it being a black screen. Piko WTF, man. Why did you not do this stuff so that it would be playable out of the box? Every other developers have none of these issues. Set your stuff up. I have played so many GOG DOSBox games that set their stuff up right that it is surprisingly that there is someone who fails to do the same. Failing at the finish line like this is so disappointing and... wait a minute - why am I expecting Piko to NOT MESS IT UP? Never mind that. The game itself is a generic overly-cryptic where-do-I-go style platformer not-unlike Dorke and Ymp. The music is okay and the high stabbing speed is ridiculous. Nothing to write home about. I got this for pennies from Fanatical. That is the fate of most of these Piko releases. LMAO P.S. To set the path to your game so that you can run it in the non-configured DOSBox, the simplest way is to mount the drive you have the game installed by typing something like: 'mount P D:\', then 'P:' and then 'cd [DIRECTORY HERE]' until you reach the game's "PVC", then run 'INSTALL' (press 'X' when it asks for a disk to skip installing after) and finally 'PV' (the game executable).
Follow our Curator Group for more reviews
Prophecy I - The Viking Child is a platformer with some of the worst mechanics I have ever experienced. First, the hit boxes for enemies are abysmal, requiring you to stand a few pixels away in order to hit with your sword. The level design is annoying and frustrating, with enemies placed in spots where you are almost forced to bump into them. It is just a confusing game that isn't very much fun to play. 1/10
Visit our website for more in-depth reviews and recommendations
Rather inferior platformer with annoying combat.
Prophecy I - The Viking Child is an ancient game from 1991. It's a whopping 32 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. For me, the game doesn't even work, it just launches into DOSBOX but doesn't proceed to mount/execute any game files, so the game is fundamentally unplayable without me digging around and fixing the developers problems for them... this is not something gamers should put up with, expecially considering the eye-watering price on this abandonware cash grab. If you can get it to run, it's obviously too dated. It's an old side scrolling adventure/action game with a Norse mythology theme. Locked resolution, 320x200 by the looks of it, locked controls, clunky gameplay. The gaming industry definitely advanced beyond this very quickly. Having said that, even when this was new in 1991, it was not one of the games on the prominent shelves, it was one of the games piled into the bargain bins at the front of the shop. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Because the game is broken and unplayable for me, it may also not work for other gamers. This is a solid reason to approach this game with some skepticism. Prophecy I - The Viking Child is extremely expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $9 USD (is this some kind of joke, or are they serious??), and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again.
I'm glad I also had a NES to game on when I was a kid.
I legitimately cannot even review the gameplay of this game as the game itself doesn't even work. It throws you a popup and some stuff, where I believe it wants you to set up a bunch of things so that you can play the game. I gave it a bit of time to try to set up, but honestly it isn't even worth the time. This is an abandoned game that you cannot even play anymore, so don't bother picking it up (even if you have nostalgia).
Impossible to recommand this. I had to try five times to configure the controls. Even after succeeding, the game switch from azerty to qwerty without reason. Plus all the keyboard is not recognized. The game appear only on 25 % of my screen. I checked the guides, but there's no serious help in there. It's probably cute when you can play, even I got awful colors. Anyway, there was no effort to make this player friendly on Steam, like many broken oldies that are sold here. So I don't understand why they dare asking money for this.
