PrizeFighter - Heavyweight Edition

If you grew up on Sega CD FMV fever dreams Night Trap, Double Switch, the whole Digital Pictures era, PrizeFighter: Heavyweight Edition hits like slipping a worn VHS into the deck… Except this time the picture doesn’t look like it’s fighting for its life. The original Prize Fighter was always special because it wasn’t “boxing with sprites” it was boxing like an interactive movie, shot in stark black and white from a firstperson view, with that grimy, bruised knuckle modes that made the Sega CD feel dangerously cool at 12AM. You’re “The Kid,” clawing up the ladder beat three contenders and earn the shot at the champ while the camera stays right in your face, close and sweaty like ringside footage. What Screaming Villains absolutely nailed is bringing it back without sanding off what made it Prize Fighter. The big glowup is that it’s rebuilt from the ground up and enhanced with 4K video, so the footage finally has the clarity and punch you always imagined it had back when you were playing through composite blur and CRT haze. And the best part? It’s not just prettier it’s more enjoyable to play now. The modern release leans into 'this is still FMV boxing,' but with gameplay tweaks and quality-of-life improvements that make the fights feel less like you’re wrestling the interface and more like you’re actually trading shots and reacting in the moment. The cinematic pedigree still comes through as well, the bouts were staged by Ron Stein (fight choreographer tied to Rocky and Raging Bull work), and that authenticity is a big reason the punches and movement don’t feel like cheesy playacting. So yeah if you loved the Sega CD original, this is the version that finally matches the memory. Same late night FMV grit, way sharper presentation, and smoother moment-to-moment play a real rematch, not just a museum piece.

The Sega CD classic is back and better than ever. Quality of life improvements, an easy mode, HD upscaled video. Another great FMV gem from Screaming Villians.

A very well executed teamster of the cult classic Sega CD title. I am playing on steam deck. It is a tad buggy, but overall having a blast. Some fun quality of life enhancements and fun unlocks round out this effort by the developer. If you enjoyed the original you’ll love this. If you’ve never played FMV games of this era you may be left wanting more.

It's a treat replaying games that used to be limited to 320x224 resolution on Sega CD now in 1440p or 4K. This game offers a lot of replay value with spending attribute points to make it through the harder stages and features autosaving, which is different from most other one-session campaign FMV games from this era. You have to play a bit to grind enough points to really get through the tougher difficulties. There's also [spoiler]behind the scenes/art[/spoiler] unlockables, seems like you need to earn certain match conditions and fight endings to obtain everything.

まさかこの時代にプライズファイターがプレイできるようになるとは思ってもみませんでした。それも映像が高画質になり、ゲームシステムに少しだけプラス要素もある形で。１０代のころにメガCDで結構遊んでいましたが、深くやり込んでいたとか完全攻略したとかというレベルではないです。ただ、雰囲気がとても好きでセンスの良さに惹かれていました。映画レイジングブルを意識したモノクロ映像やクラシックな時代背景、ロッキーのようなワンナイトドリームに。 プライズファイターはジャンルとしてはLDゲーム(ドラゴンズレアやタイムギャルなど)であり、映像に合わせて適切な行動を取ると先に進めるというものです。特殊なのは主観視点でボクシングの試合を展開していくところで、対戦相手の動きからヒットする攻撃を導き出しダメージを与えてKOするのが目的です。 しかしながら、敵の動きからヒットの目星をつけるのはほとんど不可能で、イージーモードの時に表示されるガイドを見ながら攻撃することになります。最終的にそれを覚えてミディアム以上の難易度に挑む流れです。正直、正攻法でこのゲームを攻略していくのは非常に困難です。自分にとってプライズファイターは実写映像による没入感を楽しむものなので、まずは主人公を強化すること専念します。 初戦の相手であるハニーボーイに繰り返し挑んで強化ポイントを獲得するのです。いきなり勝てる人はまずいないと思いますが、勝っても負けてもポイントは手に入ります。そうしたら左パンチの攻撃力に集中してポイントを割り振ります(右でもいいですが、左の方が有効打のチャンスが多い気がするので)。試合中は左パンチのガイドに狙いを定めてひたすら打つべし！ 多分３、４回は負けると思いますが、そこからは攻撃力の差も出てゲームにも慣れてくるので簡単に勝てるでしょう。しばらくはハニーボーイを養分にしてレベルアップを図り、かなり余裕が出てきたらスタミナや右パンチにも少しずつポイントを割り当てます。準備ができたと思ったら次の対戦相手に挑戦しましょう。 この移植の素晴らしい点は、メガＣＤ版の日本語音声が収録されていることです。洋画劇場の吹き替えのような雰囲気が味わえます。ただ、オリジナル以上に音ズレや音声の尻切れがある気がします。そこは残念です。 このHeavyweight Editionは、ゲームをやり込むと劇中の映像や開発資料を鑑賞できるようになるギャラリーモードや、試合中に緑色のゲージが溜まるとＱＴＥ的なコンボラッシュが発生する新たなアクションが追加されていています。かなり人を選ぶゲームですが作品への愛を感じる移植だと思いました。
