EXPERIMENT #31 OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the newly-released visual novel Experimentation DATA AND METHODS: Bought on Steam and read through in under an hour RESULTS: Mixed to negative as the game is too short for the plot(s) to develop properly, not that great narrative-wise, and there are ~3 CGs, not counting the one that's also the game's cover image CONCLUSION: Underwhelming FOLLOW-UP/FURTHER RESEARCH: Wait for a lower price or skip altogether.
I was excited for the art I saw on Stream, but this was all made by AI. I actually think the stories were made by AI, too. At least that's how they read. Basically, this is what would happen if AI created games.
Experimentation is a visual novel that tends toward the horror aspect of life, but the story(s) drags on next to still imagery, and that is very scary! While the price point is amazingly cheap, so is the game or lack of one. I had to explore a menu and its horrors just to figure out how to get the menu into English. That was more action packed then the entire chapter of the MIRROR. While playing the MIRROR, I had text change a few times into other languages while in the middle of the story. Not to mention that it felt like an eternity having to read though that story. Would have been better with narration and moving imagery or animations, but looking to the bright side I was able to nap right after playing the first chapter! And so I DID I know that all games are worth playing, and I did so for about about 20 mins. When it was over I decided that playing Experimentation would never happen again. NOT Blockhead APPROVED!!!
Experimentation is a perfect example of how not to make a visual novel. I'm not a fan of making long reviews, so to keep it short and simple: - The game will frequently turn your language into Russian, because the developer just didn't bother translating certain lines and dialogue. - The actual translation was likely just google translate, because it is appalling. There is likely at least one error in each line of text. - The music choice is very poor, and has no transition at all between segments, and will cut off in the middle and just begin the next track. - The story is super bland, predictable, and nothing special. I liked the idea of having 4 small separate stories leading into the final story at the end, but it doesn't matter if the idea is good, if the execution if poor. - The art is practically nonexistent. Including backgrounds, there's maybe 15 images in total throughout the entire game. Most of the images aren't anything special, and wouldn't surprise me if it's just A.I. generated content. While there is so much more I could go into detail about, seeing as the developer didn't put very much effort into his game, I'll respond with my review in kind. I would not recommend this game even if it was free, I would not even recommend this game if you were paid to play it, because the cost that is your time, is far higher than the price it is. Take your money, and your time elsewhere, because this is a disaster of a game.
The first time I played this I found many negative reviews, but now I see more positive reviews. The truth is that this cheap game is worth playing as long as you're not such a perfectionist since, indeed, there are some mistakes. I liked some sound effects and music, others I didn't. The Art is good in general, at least I liked the images, you could even use them as wallpapers/artworks. Sometimes the Russian language is mixed with English randomly. The translation is NOT entirely correct, however the stories are understandable. They're short but entertaining. I liked them all except the last one. It has 4 interesting and different stories.
Stories about parallel worlds, money and power, virtual world + approach with AI and about failure, depression and disappointment (honestly, I'm glad "J" is dead).
I can't say much about the last story where the previous 4 (or elements of them) are mentioned but they're NOT related at all. There are some things that are NOT fully explained and that's why it makes no sense to me. I didn't like it. In all these short stories there's a cause with its due consequence, so I'd say in a way they leave you with a moral. 85/100
AI made and poorly made at that. Good for a laugh with your friends, nut terribly translated and all AI art. Don't pay for a game someone made with AI, you could just have AI write you a visual novel for free.
This is a very short and sweet indie visual novel which takes an interesting twist. It's not very long and you can just finish the stories in one go. I loved the artwork and the the last two stories seem connected. I do see that the art is not credited and that's because it's made with AI. But I think the writing could be done by the dev. But i do wish it was longer, but the writing is good and I hope that there are more work from the developer. There are 5 stories in total about certain topics, I thought some had a very good moral in the story, some were very bizarre especially the last one. For a first time visual novel this is really good. The choice of music is also good. I liked the one about the game dev, I think it accurately portrays the issues, stress, feelings that some developers in the gaming industry might feel. I work partially in advertising and totally it's also a stressful job, and it is right about publishing the game but advertising really plays a major part. the second story I think says a lot about money, we live in a money seeking world all the time and you get a card that buys you anything. I remember seeing a simillar thing from the thai drama "Nano". The 4th one is one talks about AI friendship, today i did watch a news clip on how AI is impacting the world, there are some good benefits but we need to use it carefully and not get lost. The last and final story seem to connect all of the stories together in a way, at least some and connects to an other worldly fashion. Overall, I really like that the VN tackles deeper themes, philosophy and real life stituations and using a fantastical themes to handle real-life issues. Most of the situations are very relatable and we do loose sight of very important things when we get obsessed with only one thing.
