About
Possession is a turn-based traditional roguelike where you play as a ghost trying to make your way to the surface. You are incredibly frail, but have one advantage: you can possess the bodies of the monsters you encounter, and use their strength and abilities as your own. Hop from body to body as you attempt to make it back to the surface.
Dozens of possessable monsters, from the horrifying to the hilarious, with a wide variety of powers.
Special themed levels with unique hazards, creatures and layouts. Randomly generated, and each floor has multiple possible levels, so each playthrough is different!
Item-less gameplay. The dead have no need for worldly possessions, they just slow you down.
Quick to pick up and play. Unlike most roguelikes, Possession doesn't require you to memorize dozens of weird key commands, or puzzle over confusing skill and ability lists before you start playing.
Entirely playable with just the keyboard, just the mouse, or a combination of the two.
Mod support! Add your own creatures, powers and special levels, or change the ones already there.
@ Choice between graphics or ASCII mode, for the oldschool roguelike fans.
Note: The "demo" is the full game. Feel free to play it as long as you want, but if you like the game, please purchase to support its creation. Purchasing also gives you a Steam key (though you can play for free on Steam as well).
A game six years in the making
Possession is a roguelike originally released in 2013 during the 7-Day Roguelike Challenge (7DRL Challenge). Since then, Taylor Vaughan, the solo developer from Weirdfellows improved it a lot, from programming to graphics and music. Yep, he did it all by himself, and this Steam release is the ultimate Possession build, a game that delivers a great amount of fun for roguelike fans.
Easy to pick up and hard to master
Unlike most actual roguelikes, Possession is a very easy game to learn, not demanding an absurd amount of memorization and with an easy to use control scheme – it can be played only on keyboard, only with mouse, or by combining both. Kudos for the accessibility; Possession is very comfortable to play without sacrificing depth.
It’s all about strategy
The gameplay basically consists in possessing bodies, finding the level exit, defeating the boss and proceeding. You start on depth 10 and must reach the surface to win. What is interesting is that this game doesn’t feature any kind of item. Looting is not a factor here. All you’ll need to do is find the way out and do the best you can with what you have in the moment – every monster has a unique set of abilities that adds a lot of different strategies. For instance, some of them can paralyze enemies while others can trap them or cause confusion, etc. It’s also worth mentioning that sometimes is better to avoid some fights. Possession is less about hacking and slashing and more about finding clever ways to deal with a huge amount of possible scenarios. And avoid playing in your ghost form, as s/he can die in one hit (although s/he can get invisible for a few turns or teleport to a random location if needed). What is nice is that after a monster / object you’ve possessed dies, you don’t die; you get back to your ghost form. This provides a good breathing room. Otherwise, Possession would be a frustrating game.
Extra features
First off, this game offers a nice tutorial that can be repeated as much as you need to feel 100% confident to play. It’s also possible to play with some modifiers, like removing the permanent death, revealing all map every level, etc. But the greatest extra feature in this game is mod support for sure. I’m eager to see what the community will create with these tools.
Verdict
Possession is a great entry in the roguelike genre. As I said before, I appreciate the ease to play that doesn’t sacrifice depth. And I’m glad that there are options for every kind of roguelike fan (you can play with tiles, in ASCII mode, with keyboard, mouse or both). I’m not a big fan of the music – it feels properly retro, but it’s too repetitive, so I turned it off after 30+ minutes of play. Other than that, this is a great game and the price is right. Pros: * Easy to pick up and hard to master * A fun take on the possession mechanic * The ‘item-less’ approach works really well * Challenging and creative achievements * Lots of possible scenarios thanks to monster variety (100+ monsters) * Can please any kind or roguelike fan (tiles versus ASCII; keyboard versus mouse) * Works with any computer. Low system specs and support to Windows, Linux and Mac * You can save and resume at any time * Rebindable keys * Mod support Mixed: * While the music sounds good and properly retro, it’s too repetitive * The levels are huge. This may or may not please you Con: * The font is a bit small, making the interface a bit hard to read sometimes
An outstanding performance from team ghost this weekend, dominating the competition with full possession.
Possession is a turn-based roguelike developed by Weirdfellows. You play as a ghost, desperately trying to escape the hellish nether regions. You’ll have to make your way through ten different levels with only two health points. Luckily, you have the ability to possess almost any monster you encounter, assuming their stats and abilities. I love any game where you can possess different enemies (the shapeshifter in Streets of Rogue is one of my favorite characters in any roguelike) so picking this game up was a no-brainer. I’ve been impressed so far. The core gameplay is straightforward enough that its easy to pick up, but I feel there’s enough depth to develop strategies. And despite being centered around a gimmick, it actually feels like a fully fleshed out game. I've uploaded some raw gameplay footage (including a crash, unfortunately) if you'd like to see it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5t_UfWaGAU
Positives:

The visuals are pretty good. Obviously, it’s nothing that’s going to knock your socks off, but the monster design is good and everything is clear to see. For those who prefer their roguelikes more traditional, there’s also an ascii mode.
The core concept of being a ghost who can possess different monsters is of course really cool, and well executed. With the exception of the bosses at the end of each level, almost every monster you encounter in a level can be possessed (you can even possess some inanimate objects). The stronger a monster it is, the less chance you have to successfully possess it, but if you fail the monster is stunned at your chance at possession increases. I felt that this was really well-balanced, in a sticky situation you have to decide if it’s better to go for the weaker monster that might get killed or the stronger monster that might get you killed.
Info about each kind of monster can be found by mousing over them or targeting them with keyboard controls. The descriptions are well written and often really amusing. You also get some info about how healthy they are and whether they’re hostile towards you. Once you possess a creature you get full info about how much health and what abilities it has in the sidebar. The sidebar also gives you info about the monsters currently in your line of sight.
The monsters themselves are well varied in type, appearance and stats. For example, a zombie has a much shorter line of sight than a bat, but deals more damage. As far as I’ve seen, each of the levels are populated with monsters entirely unique to that level. Some monsters have no unique abilities, but most monsters will either have one or two special abilities (such as set a trap or devour an enemy) or some kind of ranged attack.
While playing, I haven’t felt that particular enemies are better than others. Perhaps it’s just because my playstyle has been pretty combat-avoidant so far, but I don’t think any specific type of enemy is inherently a better choice than another kind of monster. It’s all situational.
The game can be played with mouse, keyboard or a combo of the two. I’m not super familiar with keyboard-only roguelikes so I usually prefer playing stuff like Cogmind with a mouse, but I actually found the keyboard controls here really easy to get used to and ended up preferring them.
Focusing entirely on the possession mechanic and not adding items into the mix really helps keep the game simple enough that it can easily be picked up by anyone.

Negatives:

It can be a bit difficult to find the exit of a level, especially as the levels are pretty large. This isn’t helped by there not being a minimap, but the dev is working to add this to the game soon.
It does seem like the game has some technical issues. I’ve had two crashes in an hour and a half of play and there are already a few bug reports on the forums. Luckily the dev is very responsive in trying to get these fixed.
Even on my larger display, I found that everything was too small and sometimes I physically moved closer to my screen to see things. I’d love to have the option to increase the scale of the game, even if that means sacrificing visual fidelity.

Verdict:
Possession is easy to recommend just for being so easy to pick up. The core gameplay is a lot of fun, its well balanced and there’s a bunch of monster variety. You may run into some bugs, but the dev is very responsive and its certainly not bad enough to effect overall enjoyment. I’d recommend this game to all fans of the roguelike genre.
Abstract
A classic roguelike with interesting game mechanics. You do not need to collect all kinds of trash in the hope of finding a suitable sword or learn new spells — you just put on the bodies of your enemies... Works fine on Ubuntu 16.04.
GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 16.04. This is about as "roguelike" as you can get! The game has a great concept and potential ... but feels a bit underdeveloped. All of the issues can be corrected, however. - Game is prone to crashing. In 6 run-throughs of the game it crashed 4 times. Reviewing the change-logs this was not an isolated incident. NOTE: This could be fixed by the time you are reading this, but as of the time of this review this was a deal-breaker for playing the game - Game uses a LOT of text. Every explanation is long-form written text, including skills, attacks, and updates. You spend most of your time reading. And if you don't read you miss a significant part of the strategy of the game, so you MUST read. That said, there is a lot of good potential. The idea of possessing or killing being a choice is a different idea around playing. Also, the game sports a full ASCII mode where you can get WAY back to the true Rogue feel of the game. This was a nice touch. Even if you don't end up playing that mode, it is fun to see that it is there. The biggest issue I have with the game is the UI. There is a lot of text. and I mean a LOT of text. Be read to read. All the menus are reading and the tutorial is reading. I really found it hard to give this a thumbs up based almost on that. The graphics won't knock your socks off, but they function quite well, and it is clear to understand what is going on. You can play the game with keyboard, mouse, or a combo of both. You are not locked into one movement style, and I do find myself switching between them based upon how much I am being swarmed by enemies! In short, I think this game will be a fun one once the bugs get cleaned up. The developer is actively working on improving the game, so I have high hopes that things will turn around in that area.
This is a good game, a true roguelike. It's a polishing up of a 7DRL so it's based around a gimmick, in this case possessing your enemies. I'm not sure of the long term appeal of the game though since you can't replay it as a different class because by possessing things throughout the game you are always everything. I really like the graphics in particular since they remind me of my own style.
Really solid Roguelike, definitely worth the asking price considering it's original concept. The mechanics are well designed and the writing is pretty good all round. Massive props for the modding guide the dev put up, hoping I can make some of my own soon. Can't really nit-pick as the game does everything it sets out to do well. Perhaps the music/sound effects could be improved? But for a roguelike any sound is a + and I shouldn't be complaining as it still does the job, the creature aggro sound effects and ability effect are a nice touch. Great for people who like smaller, more contained Roguelikes that you can actually finish but have enough variety to keep you coming back,, like the Golden Crone Hotel, Depths of Tolegal etc...
I received the product for free. I did not receive any compensation to write this review.
Fun roguelike with an original concept. Kinda like mid boss but imo way better. Pretty hard and takes some time to get used to, but you'd expect that from a roguelike. And it has a demo so you don't have much to lose trying it
Quite good, I must say. True roguelike! Just hope more content can be poured in.
