Introduction While Polyfury was having a demo competition I found the game on X/Twitter, because of its Tempest meets Geometry Wars appearance I was intrigued. I joined and came close to winning. I spend about 10 hours on a 90s level :) About Polyfury is a great minimalistic boss rush bullet hell shoot'em up with everything geometrical shaped. The game is all about the bullets, every boss has multiple attack wave patterns and you're not just supposed to avoid them, you're encourage to graze the bullets and the bosses. This racks in bonus points and powers up your laser. There are seven bosses, you can face them all in succession in the Gauntlet or one at a time in Practice mode. Scoring The game is made for score chasing with a leaderboard for the Gauntlet and one for each boss in Practice mode. Score pick ups increase your multiplier maxed at 32x. It slowly drops over time so you have to keep picking up the blue stuff. Timing is also important. When your laser is ready firing it can save a life if you were just hit but it also hurts the boss and turns all bullets you hit in score pick ups. So sometimes you'd want to wait for more bullets on screen. At the end of a boss stage all bullets turn to pick ups. There's also a time based multiplier, clear a level within 90s and you'll get 4x, take longer and the multiplier drops. Control You can use a controller, mouse or pen or perhaps even a spinner in the future. A controller has as advantage you can quickly change your position on the ring but you lack a bit of precision. With a mouse you have precise control but to change your position you'd have to move the mouse pointer through the center. A pen offers the precision of a mouse and allows you to change positions by just lifting your pen and planting it elsewhere. I helped make Polyfury accessible and I could not be more proud of the devs for the incredible job they’ve done. I normally cannot play bullet hell games due to severe migraines - but because of the myriad of accessibility features included in Polyfury, I’m able to thoroughly enjoy this genre for the first time! It’s a fantastic game. Also, the music is an absolute banger. It’s great.
Amazing game! Very challenging addicting, always gets me playing for really long specially when going for all the stars and highscores :)
Really fun game! I haven't played many bullet hells before so it was pretty difficult for me to start with but the game did a good job of slowly ramping up the difficulty and I was able to beat all of the bosses in session (albeit with a lot of deaths). Each boss feels really unique and the attack patterns felt fair but never easy. Most of the levels took me 3-5 tries to beat. Also I think there was a different song for each boss which was nice.
Gameplay/Review: https://youtu.be/iVvOvwJicvk Polyfury is a game that has somehow flown under the radar. It's an intense bullet hell boss-rush game with innovative gameplay and awesome music. Man, that sounds like a pitch. Let me try it again. This game is hard. Bonkers hard at times. Maybe I suck? Did I spend almost 3 hours trying to get on the leaderboard and become the world's best destroyer of shapes? You bet I did. Did I get on the leaderboard? You bet I did. At least twice. Polyfury is the kind of game you load up because the flashy graphics capture your eyes and you say, "Hey! This is going to be easy and fun!" And then you play it. And it's, "Holy trapezoid, this game is tough. But it sure is fun!" You're a triangle that shoots a never ending stream of bullets towards other geometric shapes, all while avoiding bullets. Or, if you're like me, you run into those bullets because you've got the coordination of Mr. Magoo. And you know what, that's ok. Because practice makes better. And better eventually makes better-ish. The game has such an engrossing pull to it that once you start you will almost immediately be sucked right back in, even after being obliterated by that Hateful Heptagram. Seriously, the game's just a blast to play. You're a triangle, you have a circular area that you move around while shooting the boss and avoiding their attacks. It might take awhile to really get the hang of combat - but when you do you're going to have these great moments where you simply feel triumphant. Visually the game has all of the fancy colors to make you happy to have eyes, and the character bosses look lively considering they are shapes. I mean, they should probably teach kids about shapes using this game as the teaching method. I think that'd be a great idea. SFX and Music. Hot dang. Where's my "buy Soundtrack" button? The soundtrack is amazing. Just pure bliss. Catchy tunes that work perfectly with the game, and absolutely my favorite thing about the game. So Overall: Awesome game. Combat is fast-paced and a ton of fun. Difficulty is tough, but not unbeatable. Great visuals, and amazing sound. 10/10.
these shapes got hands
Polyfury is a very damn fun and very damn stylish game. Dev certainly knows a thing or two or ten about juice, and even more about shmups.
A great and challenging bullet hell game that encourages you to chase the biggest scores you can get while you move along a circular track around the constantly moving and unpredictable bosses. I backed the Kickstarter and played various versions of the game as it went through development, and it's great to see it finally released! Glad to finally get to face all the bosses. The challenge ramps up as you get through the game, and there's lots of tricks to get better scores. Very much worth the money, give it a try if you like this genre at all!
I was able to complete the game in under a few hours of gameplay (length will probably vary a lot based on skill level), but I would consider all of the content to be high quality. There aren't any boring parts with the choice of focusing on boss fights, and there were some creative mechanics that kept the game fresh through all of the bosses. I chose to play with mouse and thought it worked best for fine control.
It's a bullet hell Tempest. Control's a bit wonky as it sits right now (10/6/23) but I'm working with the dev on that. Spitballing ideas and the like. Here's a video review. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37tOOSRSsJA
