This is a weird one. The graphic is really good, the music is too. But there is something in the control which makes it hard to stop in a diagonal direction, at least on the d-pad. Using the analogue stick feels wrong in a game where you can only shoot in 8 directions. To top it off, it is bone hard. The first level was rather easy to pass but... level 2 feels much to hard compared to level 1. I am not a bad player but I tried it a good five times and I didn't manage to pass it. So I'd like to warn people about the difficulty. Don't get this if you are squeamish about harder games. That said I still enjoy to play it enough to give a thumbs up.
Pocky and Rocky Reshrined is a game which apparently is partly a remake to the SNES original but branches off into a new story as you go further in the game. This game took me about 2.5 hours to fully beat story mode and I think for its price, 30 dollars. It's a bit on the more expensive side. The good thing is though that this game is filled with charm, it incorporates Japanese mythology to a cutesy top-down shooter, think of games such as Shock Troopers on the Neo Geo. The spritework in the game is also simply amazing and is eye-candy to the player, the developers put in a lot of effort to make the sprites as vibrant and expressive as possible. What separates from normal arcade shooters like those is that Pocky and Rocky has a story narrative where you are locked to a certain character depending on which stage you're at, free mode gets unlocked after beating story mode. The game has a dodge button, melee which is used to deflect enemies close to you or reflect projectiles, and a standard melee projectile which can be upgraded. My only gripe with the gameplay itself is that you cannot lock onto a direction you want to shoot at while moving, but it tries to compromise it where Pocky can later in the game throw an orb at any direction, by firing on that orb it automatically hones in on the closest target, and that is what actually helped carry some of the more difficult bosses in the game, you will be using orbs a lot. The only bad thing in my opinion is that for some reason the text during story mode auto-scrolls way too fast so you do miss out on what was being said for texts that are longer. Either way, I think this is enjoyable if you want a quick arcadelike experience with a friend or you enjoy retro top-down shooters in general, but I think for such a short game that one should wait out for a discount.
This is hard for all the wrong reasons. Do you like getting rushed down by enemies who just are faster than you and tank all your fire? Do you like bosses that are invulnerable for 90% of the fight, turning the encounter into a slog? Then you'll love this game.
Think of it as a different take on the game Pocky & Rocky for the SNES. With that in mind, it's a good game.
Cute, charming, short, and easy to get into.
Really liking this so far. It plays like Twinkle Tale with arcade feels and looks. It brings you back to the golden age of walk in coin-op arcades. No flickering, slow down, resolution downgrades, color downgrades, shrunken sprites, and missing graphics. The scan line filter at 5 makes it look even more perfect. This is one of Taito's best retro-arcade titles. I got this with a small discount bundle with The Ninja Saviors Return of the Warriors, which is also a thumbs up. These 2 titles aren't just good, they are perfect. Robust unflinching rock solid 60 fps, QHD, full spectrum color palette, massive sprite register, scan lines - a ridiculous request several years ago is an easy reality in 2025. 90's arcade perfection perfected on the PC. Oh what? An attract screen demo?!? Nice! When you didn't have quarters or ran out in the coin-op video arcade,, you could still savor this. Such an authentic retro arcade touch.
This a great and faithful adaptation of the series. It's sort of half remake, half sequel to the original SNES game. It's a bit easier than the SNES game, so it's more casual friendly, but there's also so much extra to do, making it still a good play for veterans of the series or genre. The art and music are fantastic, just what you'd expect from this series. Each character plays quite a bit differently, so it's fun to go through the game with each of them. If you're into the series or genre at all, definitely give it a try, it's well worth it.
