Locking co-op and Easy Mode, and disabling Easy Mode in co-op, was a terrible decision. It makes it much harder to enjoy the game with kids.
Why would you lock the one feature that makes the game fun to play (co-op) behind beating the game or grinding enough? Also no easy mode for co-op? Baffling decision making process.
PROLOGUE: --Somewhere at a gaming convention centre, on this planet-- Hiya, bro' and sis'! Do any of you like Kiki Kaikai? *Most nodding frantically, while others starts murmuring and gathers around* Which characters do you like the most? *The attendees split 50-50* Do any of you have played the original back in September 18th 1986? *Some raised their hands, while others not even born yet on that year blissfully silent and stand still* How many of you like a top-down, multidirectional shoot-'em-up (or scrolling shooter) action game? *Some others are starting to gather even closer and raise their hands* Are you ready to show your awesome gaming finger reflexes, in fighting against a variety of monsters and mythical creatures from Japanese mythology? With this game's unique humor style while still can be categorized as family-friendly? *More comes around and gather with full curiousity* What about Pocky and Rocky? *Some from other countries than Japan starts to raise their hands brimming with enthusiasm* Do you prefer Pocky, Rocky or Becky? *69% choose Pocky, 19% choose Rocky and 12% choose Becky* -------An honest to goodness trivia------- The Japanese names for Pocky, Rocky, and Becky in the game series are as follows: >Pocky is named Sayo-chan >Rocky the tanuki (raccoon dog) is named Manuke (魔奴化). >Becky is named Miki-chan (美紀ちゃん), a character who originated in the Famicom Disk System game Kiki Kaikai: Dotou-hen. The games in the series are generally known in Japan under the title Kiki Kaikai (奇々怪界), which roughly translates to "Mysterious Ghostly Realm or Weird Supernatural World". The sequel; Kiki Kaikai: Kuro Manto no Nazo (奇々怪界 黒マントの謎), is Pocky & Rocky Enshrined. Which as usual, comes with a lame censorship localization just to make this game more family-friendly outside of Japan. --------and now, back to the story------- Well, if you want to buy their latest game, please make a line right over here. And we do hope you will enjoy Pocky & Rocky Reshrined! Thank you for keep on supporting us.. *The line is becoming longer and longer, as those who already got the game now can go back to each of their homes with happy faces. Though some refusing to buy because of a silly censorship. And prefers to get the original Japanese version instead* EPILOGUE: As the developer (NatsumeAtari) look at all the buyers from afar. Feeling proudly joyful with permanent smiles. Another job well done, time for the next one and back to making great games for the upcoming future. For any gamers who truly appreciate their work. Myself rambling: Well, to be honest I like both versions. Though the Japanese version includes English text, along with other languages like French, German, and Chinese. This multilingual support means you can play the game with an English interface, and it is also region-free. So, yeah.. (^_^)d *All of a sudden, one cloaked mysterious figure swiftly knock me out instantly. Luckily I'm still breathing though unconscious* Psst, hey, you! Yeah, you.. Come here... *The mysterious figure from the mist suddenly pull the reader of this review on a shady corner* Do this at the main menu: Left 4x. Right 4x. And then finished it with Left & Right 4x. Have fun!! *then the mysterious figure disappear among a mist.*
Never realized just how few top-down shooters I have played till playing this to completion. I wasn't sure if there was another in the genre that I had beaten and that I really didn't like forward locked directional aiming. The respawn rate and angles of attacks made my first run feel stuff and frustrating at times. The 1up system made my 1st run even more frustrating. I hate that score has nothing to do with lives and instead they are invisible, requiring meele attacks to find. There are others you can aquire in shops provided you have enough or the right amount of coins. All of this I learned from YouTube after my first run and it made my second much more manageable. Pocky and Rocky seems like a fine game, but it's not for me. I got my fill of it after getting a 1CC. I do think this is another beautiful, solid output from Tengo Project. Straddling the line between remake and outright sequal as this has both reimagined stages and wholly new ones. It also has new playable characters and a few extened gameplay mechanics for the whole cast. It has a few quarks such as locking 2P co-op behind a first clear of the story mode. It's not the worst thing they've done. I also would like a stage select it would be useful for learning the game if I ever wanted to maximize a playthrough. None of my above issues would be cause for me to warn others off this game, on sale. It's base price is rather high for this game, especially compared to their other releases like say Ninja Saviours, which remains my favorite of their output. Even though no one asked for it, here is my Tengo Project Ranking: -The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors -Shadow of the Ninja: Reborn -Wild Guns: Reloaded -Pocky & Rocky: Reshrined
What I thought I was getting: A relaxing top down shooter with about a girl and her pet racoon What I got: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the gods are punching him in the face Super fun and even better with an arcade stick.
Really good game, but also really tough (for me). Absolutely needs easy mode accessible from the start.
Pocky & Rocky Reshrined is a fantastic revival of a beloved classic, and a true showcase of the talent behind Tengo Project. The art direction is immediately striking — lush, colorful pixel work that feels both nostalgic and refreshed, beautifully capturing the spirit of the original 16-bit era while making it shine on modern systems. The game’s visuals, characters, and enemies draw deeply from Japanese folklore and shrine maiden themes, giving every stage a distinct personality and cultural flair. Gameplay is tight and engaging, with playful yet challenging run-and-gun action that stays true to the classic formula while feeling smooth and polished. And knowing that a team of original developers — the core of Tengo Project — led this project gives it an extra layer of authenticity and care that fans of retro shooters will really appreciate. In short, Reshrined is a loving tribute to its roots and a must-play for anyone who values art direction, folkloric charm, and timeless gameplay.
1CC'd the game on normal first try(story mode). Was going to go for 100%(play through arcade mode with all characters), but the game gives no practice mode. Even the last game, The Ninja Warriors gave you a simple stage select. The inability to learn specific stages/bosses without playing though the whole game ruins the experience. Even with the SNES original you could at least use save-states to practice bosses or replay stages on both original hardware using a FX-pak pro, or on an emulator. Edit: The game is actually really easy now that I've looked at others 1CC runs. You can earn almost 20 lives playing the game. Roulettes aren't random and there are some hidden lives I missed while playing the game. The stage 4&6 bosses can be cheesed with bombs(the only parts I struggled with). Still, the game would be better if there was a boss rush, and a level select.
