Gentle Jena
Developed by VISUAL ARTS/Key and published by VISUAL ARTS, planetarian: Snow Globe is a standalone kinetic visual novel that expands the universe of the acclaimed planetarian series by exploring events that occurred before the original story. Rather than focusing on survival in a devastated world, this prequel presents a gentler narrative centered on everyday life, giving players the opportunity to experience the peaceful days that shaped the beloved robotic heroine, Yumemi Hoshino. As a kinetic novel, the experience is entirely story-driven, offering no branching paths or gameplay decisions, allowing the narrative to unfold exactly as intended through carefully paced scenes and emotional storytelling. The game revolves around Yumemi's work at a department store planetarium alongside her supervisor, Satomi Kurahashi, and other employees. Through ordinary interactions and workplace routines, the story gradually builds meaningful relationships that highlight Yumemi's innocent curiosity and unwavering dedication to bringing happiness to visitors. While the premise appears modest, the writing succeeds by transforming everyday conversations into heartfelt moments that emphasize friendship, compassion, and the quiet beauty of human connection. Fans of the original release will appreciate seeing familiar characters before tragedy struck, while newcomers can enjoy the story without needing extensive knowledge of the previous game. Visually, Snow Globe delivers a polished presentation that perfectly matches its calm and reflective tone. The detailed backgrounds capture the welcoming atmosphere of the planetarium and its surrounding environment, while expressive character artwork helps convey subtle emotions throughout the narrative. The snowy scenery and warm indoor settings create a pleasant contrast that reinforces the story's nostalgic mood. Every illustration feels thoughtfully composed, allowing the game's emotional moments to resonate naturally without relying on elaborate visual effects. The audio presentation is among the game's strongest features. Japanese voice performances bring warmth and personality to every conversation, making the cast feel genuine and memorable. The soundtrack complements the emotional pacing with gentle melodies that enhance both cheerful scenes and more reflective moments. Support for Dolby Atmos binaural audio further strengthens immersion for players using headphones, adding a greater sense of space and realism to environmental sounds and musical compositions. Combined with the ending theme, the sound design plays a major role in creating an unforgettable atmosphere. Since Snow Globe is designed as a kinetic novel, there are no puzzles, combat encounters, or alternate endings to discover. The experience is relatively brief, but its concise length ensures that every scene contributes to character development and emotional progression. Players seeking traditional gameplay mechanics may find the lack of interaction limiting, yet those who enjoy visual novels focused on storytelling will likely appreciate the uninterrupted narrative flow. The game also includes support for multiple interface languages, touch controls, and Steam Deck compatibility, making it accessible across a variety of platforms. What ultimately makes planetarian: Snow Globe memorable is its ability to find emotional significance in ordinary experiences. Instead of relying on dramatic conflicts or constant plot twists, it celebrates simple acts of kindness, shared conversations, and the bonds that form through everyday life. The prequel enriches the overall lore of the series while giving greater emotional context to Yumemi's character, making later events even more poignant for returning fans. Even as a standalone experience, it succeeds in delivering a touching and sincere story that lingers long after the final scene. Rating: 9/10
