Kanade (VA: Yuko Natsuyoshi)
A half-human, half-alien girl who loves to sing. She hopes to save the world through song in place of her alien mother, who isn't there to do it anymore. Honest, kind-hearted, and always polite, she puts her all into everything she does. However, her unfamiliarity with Earth as a half-alien sometimes shows itself in ways that surprise those around her.
In the near future, a sudden proliferation of plants has left much of human civilization drowning in greenery. Yuuto is a boy living in a city that's now largely reclaimed by nature. One day, a girl named Kanade appears on his doorstep.
The two had been exchanging letters after she found one of his carrier pigeons.
"I have to sing the greatest love song and save the world in my mother's place.
So, Yuuto-san... Would you please fall in love with me?"
Warmly watched over by those around them, the two tentatively begin their exploration of love. What neither of them realize is that a spark of affection has already budded between them...
Fall in love, make music, and save the world.
This is the tale of a wondrous future where the encounter between a boy and girl brings a miracle to the world.

If I could describe KANADE in two words, they would be “disappointingly plain.” Literally the only reason I read this game is because I got a review copy on launch, but it took me a year to actually get the motivation to read it, despite this only being a 5-hour moege visual novel. If I had to be honest, I’m not sure who this visual novel is supposed to appeal to. The main girl, Kanade, is a decently likable deredere heroine. However, since this game is only 5 hours, there’s really only so much you can do with her, especially since her half-alien origins don’t really matter that much, outside of some (in)convenient plot twists. It’s a pure love story about “A SONG THAT WILL SAVE THE WORLD.” There’s so little going on in the game, this game's story will keep reminding you that this is in fact the final goal multiple times. Sadly, both the pure love story and the end-of-the-world aspects are incredibly half-assed, both in terms of buildup and execution/payoff. This supposed wholesome pure love story starts with the main duo, Yuto and Kanade, being pen pals. That aspect is nice on paper, but you don’t even really get to see much of their letters outside of an unlockable prequel after you fully finish the game. While they do have some cute interactions here and there, since once again this is a 5-hour game where you have to develop both a post-apocalyptic world and a deredere love story, there’s only so much they can do. The romance dialogue boils down to something like this... Kanade: “I am Kanade. I am innocent. I need to fall in love for the plot. It sounds transactional, but since I’m pure, it’s okay.” Yuto: “Okay, I think I will try to fall in love with you, even though we are basically in love because the plot says we are, because we talked in letters before.” Basically, once they actually confess their feelings and don’t just "try" to be in a relationship, I just didn’t feel anything particularly anything, even with some very mild, very quickly resolved melodrama. I’ve seen plenty of decent, actually developed deredere romances in many moege VNs. I guess Kanade could be a starter visual novel for people new to the medium (supposedly that was the goal?), but it’s so shallow I would actually recommend other shorter VNs over this. And then there’s the post-apocalyptic setting with the plants overtaking the Earth, Kanade’s half-alien origins, and the world ending or something. Sounds potentially interesting, right? Well, it turns out that what I said above is true: Kanade’s half-alien origins don’t really matter outside of a plot twist that comes so late with little to no buildup I just didn’t care. The post-apocalyptic Earth barely got any buildup because you only see a few side characters, who are extremely forgettable, interact with said world. And while you kind of explore a few places in this post-apocalyptic Earth, it’s not particularly interesting. By the time you get to the emotional climax with “THE LOVE SONG THAT WILL SAVE THE WORLD” (once again, they will say this phrase many, many times, especially towards the end), everything was just so shallow and hastily thrown together. I just didn’t care. The most praise I can give this visual novel is that it’s kind of like a wholesome feature-length romance anime film, kind of like a Makoto Shinkai movie like Your Name or Weathering with You. But even those movies had more going on than KANADE, and those were less than 5 hours! I just don’t know what Frontwing was thinking with making this VN. I guess it’s nice that they want to make something more wholesome and simple compared to their usual catalog, but wholesome and simple should not mean half-assed, lazy, and repetitive writing. Unless you are allergic to yuri VNs, I think Lilja and Natsuka Painting Lies, written by the same scenario writer and also developed by Front Wing, is a way more memorable story and is only 15 hours long, since it has actual character buildup into emotional moments. Once again, I don’t know who to even recommend this title to. There are so many moege I would recommend as a first-time VN to people. They’re much better short visual novels that are handier with better execution and more memorable development than KANADE. And there are visual novels with actual interesting post-apocalyptic settings. I guess if you are really desperate for more heroines with Kanade’s design in an all-ages-only game, then… sure, read this I guess? Just don’t expect the most interesting or particularly developed romance.
