Planet of Lana

I've seen comparisons with [b]LIMBO[/b] being made and, while fair (at least for players who have a more recent frame of reference), I think that [b]Planet of Lana[/b] manages to get closer to the [b]Another World[/b] template, compared to the other game, which went physics puzzler in its latter half. No writing except the UI, not even subtitles for the fictional language heard here, all left for the player to figure out; there's lots of trial and error and ways to die for the little girl - and the cute critter, as she is not alone. The help of Mui is essential, with several puzzles based on the abilities of both characters. In a game like this, atmosphere is fundamental and they nailed it. Beautiful landscapes (except for the textures of some trees that look silly) contrast with the simple black shapes of the menacing machines. There are parts where all you will do is walk, and they made sure it's going to be a great walk; the run through the night and dawn is possibly my favourite scene. Even without finding all the shrines, I had pretty much figured out the backstory, a sign of good environmental storytelling. There seems to be a strong inspiration from the works of Studio Ghibli, to the point I wonder whether the very name of the protagonist is an homage to [i]Future Boy Conan[/i], one of Hayao Miyazaki's early works, whose main female character was named Lana. While I expected the duration to be just a few hours, I've been left less satisfied by how, save for some clever puzzles (especially the ones that involve raising and lowering water through some bizarre creatures), a lot of the situations are quite repetitive and some are outright recycled from one environment to another. There are also a few sequences where they didn't find any better way to involve the player than Quick Time Events. Controls can get stiff at times, something I can accept from a 1991 game, less so from a 2023 one. I especially didn't like how the button to make Mui follow is the same as the one to make him stand still, only held down, which causes a lot of issues when timing is key; with so few buttons already used, one specifically for the follow command would've been OK. Still a pleasant experience, but when I get to play the recent sequel, I hope it will either lean more on the narrative and atmospheric aspects over puzzles, or offer better mechanics.

Confesso que não esperava muito desse jogo, mas ele me surpreendeu bastante. É simples, rápido de terminar, tem uma história encantadora, uma trilha sonora incrível e uma arte lindíssima. Uma experiência curta, mas que vale muito a pena. Completei 100% das conquistas que consegui fazer, mas aquela de zerar sem morrer continua sendo meu maior desafio. Já tentei várias vezes e sempre acabo cometendo algum erro pelo caminho. Mesmo assim, foi uma experiência divertida e que recomendo para quem gosta de jogos relaxantes e cheios de charme.

lacking gameplay, not really interesting to do the same simple puzzle over and over again for 4 hours, if there was a bit more to it i would recomend it, maybe 2 more main mechanics to switch the tempo of the game. This games usually win with visuals and interesting scenes in this case that was ok but not so much to hook you and keep you looking for more. the environments where ok but never invited you to discover them more.
