Great game, you have to grind a little bit early because you are weak but after that it becomes easy i recommend this for Metroidvania fans and others alike it is fun, short and has easy achievements not like other games where it has some absurd things to do. So if you want some short story fun and little challenging game get it you wont regret 8/10 try to get it on sale
Edit: the dev seems to be a pretty chill person. they got back to me and within a day fixed the issue i was having. so with that said, what do i think about the game? it's.... fine? i really wish there was a middle recommendation instead of just yes or no. There's parts of this game that i think are pretty neat (unlocking doors with items, general combat) but other parts can get... repetitive. The extraction mini games are fun the first two or three times you have to do them, but after repeating the same mini game over and over again, it gets a little old; the lockpick minigame feels like it only works about a third of the time, especially on the first pick. Outside of those minor grievances and a bit of a rough early game it's not too bad. planning to finish the game now that pad is fixed. (negative/original review posted below) i might be keeping an eye on this one. feels like it has potential; but the store page is an outright lie. Partial controller support at best, broken controller support at worst, no rebind able keybinds, the game itself is fun from the little i've played; but i don't want to play on keyboard. if the dev(s) read this, they should really crack down on the controller support. or at least properly label it so people are informed.
Saw a mention of this game on Reddit and thought 'why not'? It's really cheap so there no reason not to try. Duration: took me about 10 hours to complete. I'm sure this can be done faster if you don't get lost as much as I do. Boss fights: none of the bosses gave me trouble. They have simply yet fun move sets. Difficulty: I'd say this game is fairly easy. Steam Deck: I started playing on PC, continued on Steam Deck and finished it on PC. Cloud saves are a blessing. Developer: is very responsive and helpful. Mini games: could use some improvements. Some mini games (e.g. pick-locking doors) are always identical. Perhaps the developer can add some randomization in the starting position.
It's a fun game so far and the creator has worked nonstop to resolve issues.
PROS: - Sound effects are amazing (most especially when you level up!) - It's easy to hold onto ropes (other games can't seem to have this down) - No crouching (a suggestion!) but can use W and S to scout up or downwards - Your new character is damaged already to demonstrate the heal after the prologue - Cutscene animations have been well done (ESC key is already there even if first encountered if you want to skip) - Makes notes human readable (since it might hurt someone's eye after reading through a couple of those fonts) SUGGESTIONS: - Incorporate combos as part of upgrades - Swap the equipped consumable to the secondary one after the primary one empties out - Make enemies spawn after X amount of minutes? Since some areas can be farmed for mutagen EXP (prime example is the walking clump of bones after the save point) - Sniper ghosts should turn first before being able to target you again (if you're in the opposite side) I am extremely addicted, I want to discover all of the available crafted pieces of equipment and go to areas I haven't been yet. Thankful for this opportunity!
Super fun Metroidvania on a budget. For $6, a couple of cups of coffee, this is undoubtedly a great deal!!
A pretty solid Metroidvania, and this is coming from someone who grew up playing a lot of Castlevania. The addition of gamepad support was much needed as before I was getting by by using Steam Input so thank you for that developer. I'm very much looking forward to update 1.1 and will definitely be giving this game more of my time at some point in the future. The art style is very unique and I LOVE the mini cutscenes that are incorporated into the game as well. The mini games aren't bad but can get a little repetitive after a while and some may wish to just skip them. I was also told that English was not the dev's first language and I think they did exceptionally well considering that fact in the dialogues of the game. I've also heard that quite a few typos in the game were fixed in the recent update and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. The only minor thing I'd ask for is maybe allowing us to have an encyclopedia in our inventory that stores all the notes we come across in case we wish to read them later. I also think that even though I thought one or two things were a bit cheap, that the game has a very well balanced difficulty curve and manages to stay between being not too difficult and not too easy. All in all it was a solid experience and I recommend this game to anybody who is a fan of pixel art games and metroidvanias.
Stop the Pestilence
TLDR: If you like action platformers / castlevanias this game is tightly made and an overall enjoyable experience and worth the price point. Its difficulty curve is in a sweet spot of being engaging, but not too hard where it feels unbeatable. -- A Light Description -- A Metroidvania where you take place as a Plague Doctor, With the sole goal to cleanse the nearby town that has been taken hostage by a sudden infection. Tight movement, light crafting mechanics and a minor trait system aid you as you plunge into the depths of a twisting castle. opulent, but a broken shell now that the infection has taken hold. As you dive deeper you start to feel a malicious presence lurking behind each stone block. A threat that maybe, the infection isn't the only thing after you. With a decent difficulty and very cool mechanics for each enemy this game is worth a pick up if you happen to enjoy adventure platformers and/or metroidvanias. the pixelated art-style is cohesive and looks very good. The sound design is great for both hitting/killing enemys; making combat overall incredibly satisfying. each enemy is designed perfectly giving you a good idea of what they do, so you're able to dodge it and prevent damage. the minor build options allows for a lot of flexibility as you dive deeper. If you get stuck, killing some minor enemys to push forward and upgrade you gear a little bit helps kickstart progress. again the difficulty curve is just a little bit above casual, as dying resets you all the way back to your last checkpoint which can be either several rooms away or 1/3rd of the castle away. but the game slowly opens up making the large building easier to traverse. despite initially getting the game for free I purchased a copy for my friend (due to his affinity for castlevania) and it is well worth the money as a whole. I Highly recommend due to its easy ability to pickup, play for a little bit, or play it in-between as a sort of 'break' game and return later, and i have enjoyed the game to the point where i will 100% it.
Fun short metroidvania, and especially impressive from a solo developer. Map and combat design are solid, bosses are interesting and well-telegraphed, and the writing is pleasantly humorous. I first played this last year and ran into a save corruption bug, so big props to the dev for fixing those even if I did have to restart from scratch (and hey, that's on me for getting greedy and dying in the tutorial boss fight). Good stuff all around, and I'm excited to see what they do next.
