Pixel Stories of Dungeon is a turnbased roguelite rpg game. You are a small child that wants to be the next hero in the tournament. Therefore you have to defeat different bosses in all parts/dungeons in the world. You can go to these parts of the world by selecting them on the world map. All these dungeons have many monsters which you must/can defeat. Each dungeon has a few stages before you meet up the boss. After that you will return to town. You cannot leave a dungeon. Like most games of this genre you can regain health by walking around. You can catch monsters as a pet (like Pokemon). Only one monster can help you fight in every battle. Your pet can die. If that happens, you have to catch a new one. You can control what your pet will do in the game. Your mother will build a place for your pets. Here you can store a few pets. You have to bring food for them, so they level up. The monsters in the game only move when you move. Game is fully turnbased. Like most games in this genre you have to grind to level up. There a lot of items you can buy, find and sell. This game has no permadeath. If you die you will be rescued by the citadel. You can keep your items, but it will cost you some gold. The game is fully played with a keyboard, you can assign the keys you would like to use. You can only save at a save point in town. The graphics are okay, if you don't mind pixel art like me. Sounds are okay too. One thing I really missed in this game is a running option to speed up some gameplay. I wish the game will have controller support in the future. Also a save anytime option would be nice. The dev told me this game will have achievements soon/, which would be nice. The dev is very active on the forum, to help you with all questions, I like that a lot. The game is fun to play, if you like pixel art rpg/roguelites. The game has enough content to justify it's price tag. I would give it a 7.5 out of 10 More reviews on our Curator Page
Game has some interesting ideas but could receive further improvement. Spelling and Grammar leave a lot to be desired and not everything about the game is totally intuitive. Despite this game being played with the keyboard, it makes use of a 'controller' scheme that ignores the existence of your numpad keys. There doesn't seem to be an ability to rest up, leading to a lot of 'waiting' each and every turn to naturally regenerate your health. Grinding for levels looks to be a thing too. Something to note is that despite the descriptive blurb about this game saying it is a rogue-like, I can't really say it is. There isn't any perma-death as you will simply be thrown out of dungeons when you die and have to pay a small fee of money as a penalty. No Procedural Generation is present in the game apparently so I'm guessing the player will be thrown into a randomly selected map when entering zones with enemies to fight. There is definitely something here though, and I'm sure with some work this could be made more attractive. However, this was definetely a game that should have been released in Early Access; as opposed to the full release it received.
To be honest this game show what mean "work with passion". The (two) developer follows all the review exspecially the negative one. After a few day they came out with a good update which bring to us a good part of the missing feature and I'm pretty sure the english patch will come in a small amount time. So far the game have fully soddisfy my need, except with the english translation which is a bit rought. I hope to see many more update of this game!
I'm sorry, I really didn't play this for very long before posting this review but I just can't persist with this game, it's too frustrating. First of all it has dialogue boxes when you speak to npcs, often multiple dialogues for one "press to talk" that appear letter by letter and can't be skipped. Secondly the key rebinding won't let you bind all the keys so for example when I try to bind my physical 'z' key to 'action' it won't let me because under my dvorak layout z is semicolon. Also, when you try to rebind a key and find you can't rebind it to what you want the only way out is to press a key it will let you bind or press escape, but if you press escape it backs you out of the whole key redefiniton dialogue and you lose any changes you already made. Having persisted a little more: the English in the game is very bad. I mean, you will be able to tell what people mean most of the time but it's like a very bad translated rpg from the cartridge era. Even in the first dialogue it should say "Why don't you" but it says "Why do you". The first place you find yourself is in a city with no guide where anything is so you have to walk round the city which is fairly tedious as you don't walk that fast, and talk to all the npcs which for reasons already mentioned is tedious. I finally got out into the battling part and it was very lacklustre. The dungeons are handmade not procedurally-generated and there's no permadeath, you just get kicked out of the dungeon and have to pay a fee so the game doesn't really count as a roguelike. I can't recommend this, I'm sorry.
It's a particular rogue-like game that reminds me of the Mystery Dungeon series (I guess they took inspiration from it), but it implements different features such as the creation of skills and the possibility of having a pet. On the gameplay side, there is no game over (I personally appreciate it, I've never been a fan of permadeath), the creation of skills is fun and allows you to have different approaches for different dungeons. The game is well balanced, as enemies are always (more or less) at your level, so you can't go back to the first dungeons and oneshot monsters, but the game always poses a challenge (enjoy, hardcore players). Anyhow, you can take a golem as a pet. A golem. A. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Golem. 10/10 would tame again.
I got a free key for this from the devs for expressing early support and while I'm really grateful, and it shows that the devs are cool people and savvy business types, it didn't impact the following review. It's my honest opinion, pro and con :) I have always loved the ChunSoft mystery dungeon games and have been playing them since Torneko no Daiboken; this game is a spiritual kin to those and if you've played the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon or Etrian Mystery Dungeon games you know what to expect: turn-based combat, random dungeons, item collection, enemy recruitment, and a softer approach to the genre wherein death isn't a total reset but still has consequences. Pros -big fan of the masterfully wrought pixel art -music is fitting for the area and sounds great -has run flawlessly for me with zero bugs or glitches -wide array of areas, creatures, skills, and classes available from the start. Always something new to do :) -no slouch on the challenge. I am still building up to take on the first boss as an assassin and I have died many a time. However, death only takes a little money so every run represents some progress. -I liked how monster recruitment is cooldown based rather than fully RNG like the ChunSoft titles; I am hoping later in the game I will gain the abilty to have more than one monster partner, but so far Team Piranha Plant 4lyfe -controller support works great for me. Cons -the Mystery Dungeon games from which this dev team self-admittedly takes a lot of inspiration are known for engaging and whimsical stories with a lot of memorable characters, and this game does not come up to that level, at least not so far. That may change of course! Also, in my opinion, the gameplay makes up for it. -the English in the game is... eccentric. It makes dialogue a little hard to follow. The team is actively working on this though! -no running. Not too big a deal but a weird feature to omit. Overall if you are a fan of this very specific genre as I am, this is worth getting and playing; also if you simply like roguelikes but have not played specifically a mystery dungeon game before you could do worse than to be introduced by this game. I have enjoyed what I've played so far very much and therefore highly recommend this game.
Game is great so far, nice music and feels quite atmospheric. Gameplay is similar to the "Mystery Dungeon" series, very fun and rewarding with item pickups and pet taming. There is a (very) small tutorial, but you have a manual, like old style cartridge game. Pet taming is nice, gives you the struggle to not let die your little friend, you have to take account for every move you do.
Awesome gaming play of value!
I am now stuck trying to get the achievments for this game.
