Казалось бы, чего-то такого в Steam уже итак пруд-пруди, может ли очередная инди-поделка удивить чем-то новым или как-то по-особому разнообразить досуг? Давайте разбираться вместе. В чем суть? Каждый новый раунд игроку необходимо угадать определенное слово. Буквы этого слова зашифрованы в загадке, которая и должна натолкнуть игрока на мысль о том, что же имеется в виду. Например, из загадки Place for sleeping baby (место отдыха ребенка) нужно сложить слово crib. Делать это нам предстоит с помощью самих слов загадки, которые необходимо будет выстроить в определенном порядке друг под другом, чтобы получить правильный ответ. Угаданное слово подсвечивается особым цветом, после чего игрок получает возможность перейти к другим загадкам. Пример описанного можно посмотреть на скриншотах в магазине Steam. Всего на выбор имеется 15 категорий загадок, среди которых встречаются как тематические блоки (животные, еда, фильмы), так и сборная солянка из общих вопросов. Особняком стоят категории по буквам, где Вам нужно отгадывать слово, опираясь только на количество букв в ответе. Если можно немного поворчать, то скажу, что тематических категорий на определенную тематику можно было бы сделать больше - судя по проценту выбитых достижений, именно такие блоки больше всего заинтересовали игроков. Думается, что для человека, которому английский язык приходится родным, подобная развлекуха не составит большого труда. В связи с чем скажу, что Phrase Shift, на мой взгляд, куда полезнее будет именно для тех, кто еще только изучает язык и хочет попробовать свои силы, попутно расширяя словесный багаж. Загадки, хоть местами разработчики и схалтурили, по большей части составлены грамотно и угадать даже при среднем уровне языка все вполне реально. Играть можно всей семьей - каких-либо запретных тем или пикантных моментов Phrase Shift не поднимает. На случай, если возникнут трудности, в игре предусмотрен режим подсказок, с помощью которого можно как открыть все слово целиком, так и отгадывать ответ по буквам, не сильно спойлеря себе удовольствие. Графически игра выполнена в приятном минимализме. Звуковое сопровождение приятное, расслабляющая музыка не отвлекает от мыслительного процесса. В наличии набор из 18 достижений, большую часть которых на вас высыпят по мере того, как пройдете все категории, так что с выбиванием ачивок проблем возникнуть не должно. Игра поддерживает исключительно английский язык. Ценник вполне доступный, но лучше подождать скидок. Что можно сказать? Перед нами - простенькая в своем исполнении, но местами весьма занятная на практике словесная головоломка. Такое можно посоветовать изучающим язык, и просто любителям разгадывать загадки, складывая слова. Игра неплохо подойдет, если есть желание сделать перерыв от чего-то более сложного или просто размять мозги на 10-15 минут, обогащая словарный запас. Занятная забава со словами, которая может помочь попрактиковаться в знании английского языка и потренировать свою соображалку на поиск нужного слова, чтобы решить загадку. То есть сами загадки, которые наводящими формулировками указывают на ответ, можно без проблем перевести и понять о чем идёт речь, но не всегда сходу поймешь какое слово-синоним в этот раз надо составить по вертикали. "— Тебя зовут Джон Коффи? — Да, сэр босс. Как напиток, только пишется по-другому." (с) ^_^

I really loved this little word puzzle game! Of course it's available only in English, and it can be quite challenging, but it's worth it trust me :) You have more than 500 different puzzles, and you basically have to shift the given words in order to find a single word matching the ones above. So, it's quite unique since it's a word game but the answer is more like a riddle you have to solve by reading the other given words.. no need for hints! :) Overall, a relaxing game which can be even more enjoyed by those like me who have English as maybe their third or fourth language! Probably for a native speaker isn't -that- difficult but it has so many puzzles that it can still be enjoyable and relaxing. And of course, Steam is full of non-English native speakers, so why not? :) By the way, I've been stuck some times during the very first sets of puzzles too.. ahahah

Absolutely facile. I should've read the reviews on this one, but I liked the concept of the game, and it was cheap, so I just bought it - but my god. I've got a good vocabulary, granted, but I don't think this would challenge a 12-year-old. It's ludicrously easy; the only time answers aren't immediately obvious is when the clue-words are awkward in a way that overshoots cryptic and arrives at obfuscation.

It's fine. Not great, but fine. Basically crossword puzzle clues, but instead of filling in empty boxes you use one letter from each word in the clue to assemble the answer by sliding the word to select the correct letters. The game does not tell you how to quit out- you need to press [ESC} to quit the game, Only one option in settings- Sound: On/Off (and you have to turn sound off every time you launch the game- it does not remember your choice. The music is LOUD, repetitive, a tad annoying to me, with no volume adjustment). Could be issues for people with certain forms of colorblindness. Not a native English speaker? You are not going to have fun with this if you aren't already fairly fluent. This is *not* a game to learn ESL with- the vocabulary can be fairly advanced. Fine for Deaf and HoH players- no sound is needed to play (but if you have any hearing- be aware of what I said early- the sound is LOUD with no volume adjustments.) Some of the cues and answers are very simple. some more complex. May require knowledge of pop culture, slang terms, and subjects that most children will not understand- family friendly, but not great for young children. Unless they are spelling bee champions. Good spelling knowledge of English words is needed. If you have dyslexia or are easily frustrated by spelling- this game might not be a great fit for you. There is a timed hint that you can use to have the game reveal random letters, with no penalty- so that may be helpful. The timer isn't terribly long, but if you are impatient- anything might be too long. Think of some of the best and worst NYT crosswords you have ever seen or done- this game is a mix of both. If you are up for that- I'd say to get it on sale. I got my copy years ago in a cheap bundle on a third party bundle site, so I can't say how much I paid for it, but I would guess under $1. Like I said- it's fine. Not great, but fine.

Phrase Shift is simple enough. Or too simple, if you like things that are less simple. Possibly not simple enough if you are simple yourself. Each puzzle is a stack of words which gives a clue to a vertical word revealed by sliding the horizontal words to and fro. This does create some strange puzzles sometimes, because every clue has to contain as many words as there are letters in the solution, and the stack has to contain the letters to the answer, in order. So let's say the answer is "ice". The stack could be "incredibly cold water" since that can refer to ice, and each word has the appropriate letter in it somewhere. Where it gets a bit odd is when the answer words get longer, and the phrases start to shoehorn words in just to make it work. Take the word "unicorn". You wind up with a clue like "equine horned which phallicly often attracts virgins". Sure, I guess it kind of makes sense, but don't be expecting dictionary grade definitions here is all I'm saying. Overall, Phrase Shift isn't going to make you think too hard, except when it gets weird, but it's a fine game to play on a dreary winter day as you sit sipping cocoa, gazing out the window, dreaming of horses. A fun little diversion that would fit well on a portable device while on a long trip, but not if you're driving. In that sense, it's worth the dollar. There is one little programming oversight, though: none of the starting letters are ever in the solution. If you see a two-letter row, the non-lit letter is always the right one.
