Great sound design! Good controls. Really innovative way of you using shadows in a platformer. Incredible work for a solo developer. :)
Dealing with a broken heart isn't an easy thing, and neither is this game. The unique visibility mechanics combined with a good challenge in a strongly emotional atmosphere are things that make this a fine gaming experience for those who have what it takes to press on. As such, I would heartily recommend it. Pun intended.
Cones of Sight
Would you rather watch than read? Me too. Check out the highlights of the gameplay here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTfM8PAi1_Y Philophobia uses the Super Meat Boy / punishing platformer gametype and adds a really neat (and sometimes) frustrating twist. As your character moves through the levels you will lose sight behind any surface that blocks your vision. This means that often the entire rest of the stage will be in darkness and you are blindly jumping down pits or running down hallways. This works for and against the game. It's a really neat gimmick, but it can cause frustration when you can't see where you're supposed to go; often ending runs before you start because some things you just have to jump headfirst into to explore. Is the game fun though? Absolutely. It's a challenging platformer loaded with secrets on almost every stage that are rewarding to try and go after. It has a really neat and dark aesthetic and the controls are tight. It's what you want in a game like this. tl;dr - Game works because of the gimmick with sight. It also makes it harder because of it. Fun in the end. Join the Curator group for more reviews like this: Sonoket's Lost Games
Przepiękna platformówka z oryginalną grafiką i wzruszającą historią. Poziomy składające się z praktycznie samych serc i narracja prowadzona wierszem nadają jej niesamowity, choć mroczny klimat, w dodatku muzyka nieraz zapiera dech w piersiach... No i to zakończenie... Choć już wcześniej zdarzało mi się płakać przy wzruszających momentach w grach itp., to w przypadku "Philopfobii" wyryczałam się za wszystkie czasy TvT. A, i jeszcze jedno.
A real solid hard game with unexpected subtlety in the controls. Expect some frustration, but overcoming the challenges will charge you with FIERO.
Watch this video to see what I think of Philophobia the fear of love: https://youtu.be/fTslNCxJh9Q Otherwise, I liked it. Give it a go.
It's ok. It has some good levels and some bad levels. It has a good message. I would still try to get it on sale though.
Got stuck on the 2nd to last level of Denial. Looking forward to trying again at some point. Glad to help support Tim :) Art style & feeling are great, it's a little bit dark for my taste and found it to be really hard, but not impossible. I appreciate the pacing & how the game teaches you the mechanics, no hand holding, but easy enough to figure out.
I've been watching Tim Ruswick's YouTube channel for the last few years and decided to take the plunge and buy Philophobia. My time with the game was quite enjoyable (albeit also frustrating) and it was definitely a fairly challenging platformer. The shadow mechanic was quite interesting and added to the challenge and I liked using the dash ability a lot, though I feel the other two abilities were underused a bit in comparison. There's some elements introduced in the later realms of the game that I feel could have been introduced earlier in the game to be utilised more, like these heart stalactites that try to fall on you. The 3rd and 4th bosses were also sort of annoying due to requiring a lot of rapid key presses and quick responses to avoid dying (which I did a lot). Some of the levels in the game did also suffer similar problems with relying more on rapid responses which can lead to a lot of deaths and are a source of frustration. The story presented in the game is simple and serviceable, so anybody looking for a deep story and well written characters will want to look elsewhere. All in all, I enjoyed the game and would recommend it to people who want a challenging precision platformer and can look past some rough edges. 7/10 I also want to thank Tim for being a huge source of inspiration and advice to myself as a budding game developer and I wish him well with his future endeavours.
