About
Phantoms is a first-person horror game that takes place on a strange train. You're on route to see your old friend Floyd, but all of a sudden, you sense something's not quite right. What was a simple, relaxing train ride mere moments ago, transforms into a hunting ground in a blink of an eye... and you're the prey.
The game takes inspiration from retro PlayStation™ graphics and aesthetics, combined with analogue horror and a hint of eldritch mystery. No two levels ever play the same as the layout of the train, and the items you need to collect, are randomized every time. Phantoms offers five story levels (the final one being hidden in conjunction with the secret ending), a custom level mode and two potential endings to the story.

So I want to start this review by saying I was given this game for free, but I won't let that influence my review. To begin with, this game is fairly simple to understand and relatively repetitive. It's essentially one level over multiple times with escalating tension via fast moving enemies, shorter rest periods, and more items to move between the objectives. The story isn't really a strong suit and isn't all that understandable from my point of view, but it seems fairly standard horror. In a nutshell, if you're looking for an affordable simple horror game to play on a weeknight this is probably it. However, you won't be able to finish it because level 4 is LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE! By level 4 it feels as though I'm playing a rage game, that's how difficult it becomes. Here's my content on it: https://youtube.com/shorts/zjnN_zHjI9k https://youtu.be/Js_78zH2PAs
Phantoms is basically silent hill visuals on a train. You start out in a gray world and interact with a broken electrical box, then the world turns to rust. The sound design, visuals, and story are all well done and interesting, but the downfall is actually playing it. You have to move from room to room avoiding a person / creature that can teleport at any moment, sometimes inside of you if you are in the main hall. You also cannot stay inside of the "safe rooms" for very long before you instantly die, with the amount of time the room is "safe" decreasing each level. By the 3rd level it feels like you have mere seconds, but there were countless times where I was trapped inside of a room because the creature would stop in front of the door and simply not move. There were numerous times where I would follow the creature down the hall, but he would vanish and instantly kill me by teleporting behind me or inside of me. While I appreciate the visuals, story, and sound design, I cannot recommend this game based on how not fun and bad this felt to actually play.
As a big fan of the first Silent Hill game, this immediately caught my attention, and if like me you love obscured pixelated graphics and the cling klang that game offers, you're gonna love this! I also think Local 58 lovers like myself will also get quite giddy over this too. Game play wise, it's quite reminiscent of horror games from the 2010s, games like Slender and FNAF, where once you've become desensitised to the scares, it becomes akin to cat mario (frustrating). Up until level 4, the RNG is awesome! You think you know what you're doing and what to expect, but suddenly the game will pull a fast one on you and you have to move quickly out of danger. Did I mention there's two enemies to be wary of? Well, now you know! Nowhere is safe in this game! And that's a mechanic that will be both fun and a pain as you go through the levels. I enjoy this feature because it forces you to pull up your big boy pants and move! Much like many games, expect to die. A lot! My one complaint about this game is that the difficulty increase of level 4 is fairly brutal. The progression of previous levels felt quite natural, but level 4 is particularly tough. I haven't managed to get past it yet, but I imagine its not impossible! I'll have to try again and come back later to let you know my thoughts on the ending, which there are two of. However, for less than £10, it's a fantastic little horror game. Repetitive sure, but fun with not too many obvious scares. Plus, it's great for content if you're someone looking for a new game to stream or make a video about.
Im actually too scared to play through it further. That means this is a good game. Very cool Dev too btw
I saw i was approved for this game, then i played it today on Halloween in a pitch black room, and was super creeped out, great game if you want a general creepy game plus the guards who "patrol" are creepy.
An unusual and disturbing game, Set aboard a moving train, you have to repair a broken power box while avoiding a demon version of the train conductor. The game is simple enough, but its seriously HARD AF, if you get past level 3 you've done well! The game looks like a PS1, VHS recorder and Silent Hill had a baby, it wont be for everyone, just like the game play, which is simple, repetitive and often frustrating. Sound is very creepy and can be adjusted, the "voice" sound is like background static and drove me up the wall, thankfully I could turn it down or off. Whether this is for you depends on your patience and how much you love simple horror games.
