Set against real events, the game skillfully weaves themes of betrayal, death, and love while allowing players to shape the narrative through their choices. As you embark on a journey in the early 20th century, you step into the shoes of Pyotr, a young man caught in the turmoil of a vanished country torn apart by conflict.
About This Game

Storyline
Pechka is a game that excels in its storytelling, crafting a narrative that takes players on an emotional and thought-provoking journey through a tumultuous period of history. Set against the backdrop of real events in the early 20th century, the game introduces players to Pyotr, a young man caught in the crossfire of a vanished country's struggle for survival. As players assume the role of Pyotr, they navigate the complexities of war, espionage, and personal relationships. The game meticulously integrates historical facts, offering players a window into World War I, the Bolshevik Revolution, and Korea's fight for independence. This authenticity serves as the foundation upon which the fictional narrative unfolds. What sets Pechka apart is its ability to evoke empathy and emotional resonance. The exploration of themes such as betrayal, death, and love adds layers of depth to the characters' experiences. As players make choices, they are drawn into the moral dilemmas and personal struggles that the characters face. Pyotr's journey, initially marked by uncertainty and confusion, gradually transforms into a tale of resilience and personal growth. The game's small stories contribute to the overall narrative, providing players with a deeper understanding of the characters' motivations and challenges. Through these interconnected tales, players immerse themselves in the era's turbulence, often finding themselves torn between conflicting loyalties and desires. The intimacy system underscores the importance of relationships in shaping the story. Interactions with various characters impact their favor towards Pyotr, influencing the narrative's direction and leading to multiple endings. This dynamic system allows players to invest emotionally in the characters and experience the consequences of their choices firsthand. In conclusion, the heart of this title lies in its powerful and emotionally charged narrative. By combining authentic historical events with well-crafted fictional characters, the game offers players a chance to not only learn about a forgotten era but also to experience it through the eyes of those who lived it. The exploration of human emotions, the impact of war, and the complexities of personal relationships make Pechka a standout story-driven experience that leaves a lasting impression on players.
Gameplay Mechanics
This game offers an engaging gameplay experience, combining narrative-driven storytelling with interactive elements. The intimacy system adds depth to relationships, as players' choices and actions influence character interactions and determine various endings. The incorporation of small stories that contribute to the larger narrative adds layers of immersion and complexity. Throughout these tales, players explore the turbulent era, make choices, and ultimately shape the outcome of the story.
Visuals and Audios
The game's 2D graphics capture the essence of the era, immersing players in the historical setting. The attention to detail, from characters' expressions to the depiction of the environment, enhances the overall experience. The kinda black & white color palette they follow also adds a lot of depth to the game’s grim and dark theme. The evocative soundtrack complements the narrative, setting the tone for each scene. From the melancholic tracks to the mood-setting background music, the audio elements draw players deeper into the emotional journey of the characters.
Pros

Authentic(I haven’t researched the specifics) portrayal of historical events, providing players with a chance to learn about lesser-known periods.
Engaging storyline that combines historical accuracy with fictional characters.
Intimacy system and multiple endings encourage replayability and exploration of different narrative paths.
Incorporation of small stories adds depth to the overarching plot.
Visually appealing 2D graphics and immersive soundtrack contribute to the game's atmosphere.
The developers intentionally scattered around cute cats in some scenes.

Cons

Some minor grammatical errors might occasionally disrupt the immersive experience.
Lack of an auto or skip button for cutscenes can make replaying the game more time-consuming.
Reports of incomplete footnotes might affect the immersion factor for some players.

Conclusion
Pechka: Historical Story Adventure successfully merges historical accuracy with interactive storytelling, offering players a chance to explore a lesser-known era through the eyes of the characters. The blend of real events and fictional narrative creates a rich and emotionally charged experience that tugs at players' heartstrings. While minor issues like grammatical errors and lack of convenience in replaying exist, the game's strengths in storytelling, aesthetics, and the intimacy system outweigh these concerns. If you're seeking a poignant and educational journey through a tumultuous period in history, this game provides a captivating platform for exactly that. Rating: 9/10 The word “Pechka” sounds funny but the game is actually very serious with cute cats here and there….
Set in the early twentieth century in Russia, Pechka tells the tale of a young man called Petyr who is blackmailed into working for the Japanese, gaining intelligence on Korea and carrying out assassinations on Korean and Joseon targets. Even though Petyr is a Joseon man himself, he doesn’t associate himself with any particular country, and he struggles through life shackled to the demands of his evil boss, until guilt and shame start to surface, sending Petyr into a spiraling sense of worthlessness. Pechka is a 2D adventure with many historical references, based on true events. Choices taken will affect the outcome, culminating in ten different endings based on your intimacy levels with five different characters. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3021611322 If you enjoy historical games then the subject of the ending Joseon dynasty and relations between the emerging Korean empire and the Japanese will probably interest you. Information is provided through conversations within the game and stored in footnotes which you can access at any time and read. They’re not presented in the best way, and are quite brief, but they do add some background information to the unfolding tale. Annoyingly, if you don’t have the right conversations with the right people then you will have some information missing. There’s also some character information to unlock and if you want to remind yourself of the story so far, as it is quite long, there is a brief synopsis of every episode to jog your memory. The story is very bleak, accentuated by its unusual but striking aesthetics. The artwork is original and feels sinister in nature. Perfect for the tale which involves guilt and betrayal, and there is a constant feeling of uneasiness and tension. It certainly isn’t a light-hearted story, but then again, war is not meant to be, and at times it can be an uncomfortable ride. Characters are impressively animated and the lack of colour also adds to the melancholy. There is no voice acting or narrator, everything is told through dialogue exchanges, with text sometimes having noticeable grammatical errors. It is much harder to portray emotion without voice, but the characters do a decent job of showing emotion in their faces and by through their body language, although on occasions this can go horribly wrong breaking immersion and ruining the atmosphere because someone is showing the wrong emotional response for a brief moment. It happens just long enough to look very odd and inappropriate. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3027251935 Without the power of voice, music should play a huge part in tugging those heart strings and creating drama and tension, but unfortunately this did not happen. Too many compositions are repeated and they don’t always fit into the situation, and when the story takes a dramatic turn and the music tries to ride the coat tails of the event unfolding, it often ends abruptly or doesn’t seem in sync with what is happening. I think without voice acting, and the lack of any coherent soundtrack, I found it difficult to feel any emotion or connection with the characters. The story felt long. Act one out of three took me eight hours to complete and because of the depressing nature of the story I struggled a little to complete it. When I think back on the story and I re-read the synopsis, it is quite a dramatic and compelling story but somehow it felt like I was walking through a muddy bog towards the finishing line. I felt the flow of the story was interrupted a lot for no reason, and often conversations were halted, only for you to have to re-engage with the character to continue the dialogue. There is a lot of text to read and although conversations aren’t detailed, you will need to enjoy reading. You have the freedom to travel wherever you want when certain situations and places have been unlocked, but don’t expect to interact much with people. There are plenty of characters scattered throughout each town but most of them will repeat the same slogans when approached, but on occasion you will be able to engage in a very small fetch quest either earning you an achievement or some extra information being placed in the footnotes. Some buildings can be entered, but mostly these are dictated by the story. Overall, town life felt a little contrived and you will spend a lot of time travelling from one end to the other. There are fast track options to speed up your journey, but it still felt a little laborious. If the towns were a little more enjoyable to explore, and characters were a bit more individual or interesting to talk to, then I wouldn’t have minded walking from one end to the other, but otherwise I just want to get to my destination as fast as possible, which didn’t happen. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3027251992 During conversations with one of the five main characters, you may be presented with a choice of three answers. These don’t appear very often, but when they do, choosing an answer will elicit either a positive, negative, or neutral reaction, influencing your intimacy level with that character and determining the outcome of the story. I only found this out when reading the store page after I had completed act one. This wasn’t obvious, as your intimacy levels are hidden in a menu rather than being displayed on the game screen, and I did wonder at the time what the positive or negative reactions meant. It isn’t always obvious what response your answer is going to receive either, but I think this is just the nature of the beast, as I had this issue with other similar titles like Gerda: A Flame in Winter too. I am not sure if I am missing something but there doesn’t seem to be a way to exit the game and I had to manually shut it down in the task bar.
🍳Conclusion🍳

[b] Pechka really isn’t a bad game but I just felt it was a little gloomy and depressing for my palette. I have only completed act one so far, and the story is interesting enough, but I felt that the delivery of the story, especially the music, could be honed to provide a more emotional experience. I would have much preferred character’s intimacy levels displayed on the game screen somewhere, and for choices to make more sense and be easily recognized as a positive or negative response. The artwork is very impressive and creates an unusual and eerie atmosphere which tailors the game perfectly, but I became a little bored travelling around between venues and I wish it was condensed a little more. If you like visual novels, especially of a historical nature, Pechka may provide an original experience, but I just didn’t connect to the characters as much as I hoped I would and the game felt a little long and drawn out.
I discovered the game on a whim on the Google Play store in 2021. Originally a mobile game released in 2020, now finally having a desktop version. What I liked was learning a part of history I never knew about before, as you go through each footnote you slowly learn the historical setting and its characters. It's a unique blend of historical figures and fictional characters interacting with each other, their relations and what choices you make that determines Pyotr's end is what I like about this game. And I also like interacting with the cats, seagulls, people or whatever. It's amusing watching Pyotr or other characters react as you interact. What I dislike, aside from few grammatical errors, is how time consuming it is to replay. As I know before by playing the app version, I would have liked if a auto button existed, or a skip button of some sort to skip cutscenes or to fast foward the story in a quicker pace. It might get tiring on the long run if you have to press or click forward each dialogue every time when you replay. But that might just be me. Also footnotes not being completed bug?

Pechka is an emotional, gripping historical narrative chock-full of interactions with both fictional and real figures, collectible educational facts, and player choices that ultimately decide how Pyotr's story concludes. With its fittingly somber atmosphere, the game offers a window into the livelihoods of the Joseon people living in early-20th-century Russia. I found the main cast to be especially memorable, compelling me to go through each of 10 possible endings to see how they go on with their lives past the plot's events. The female characters, especially, are surprisingly well designed and written. The game has some grammatical errors, bugs, and odd dialogical pauses due to its original mobile release having in-app purchases, but I was able to look past those throughout my playtime. I will note the story requires a fair amount of time to complete and does not have a skip/auto button or save states; this may deter some players. The game is 3 chapters long, spanning 162 episodes; it took me nearly 20 hours to complete my first run. If one wants to go for 100% achievement completion at the game's current state, I highly recommend doing one playthrough where you keep all character intimacies at 50, leave the reality/ideal meter neutral, and back up your save at around chapter 140, either yourself or with a program like Ludusavi (the game's save is located in the Windows Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Gseeds\Pechka). From there, you can restore the game's data to that point with enough player options left to unlock any ending you desire. All in all, I enjoyed Pechka, but some quality-of-life improvements would make it even better.
