Feel bad about writing this, as I love supporting small studios, but the game just lacks the depth and detail that other cheaper, longer games have. Advertised with stunning pixel art, the game itself is far more low-key, with low detail and extremely blurred character portraits. There is, it seems, only a single quest - go to A, go to B, go to C - with no deviation or branching, no puzzle - you're simply moving left and right and flipping a switch to 'true'. NPCs give a single stock phrase. A game-crashing bug marred the opening scene. Dialogue doesn't seem to matter. The noir-style speech begins to wear thin when very little overall story or plot appears. Inventory management is ill thought-out - I gained an outfit and had to drop a number of things to the floor. The music is good.
[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
I acquired this game after finishing another pixel art narrative game, Lacuna. I like pixel art, and I certainly dig good stories. Those two games are completely different, though. Pecaminosa is at its core a twin-stick shooter. Yes, there is a story, and there are some simple RPG mechanics, but if you don't enjoy action games, avoid Pecaminosa. The main story is simple - you are a unhonorable discharged cop drowning his problems in alcohol when a ghost comes to visit you and kind of forces you to kill 7 criminals. So you leave your run-down flat and visit the pawn shop to get your gun back. Chapter 1 of the game takes place in town, which is divided in 9 little districts with all kinds of shops. You have to visit most of them on various fetch-quests, while you can purchase ammo, whiskey (to heal), get a tommy gun or a shotgun and spend a few skill points to raise your four stats. There are not many fights in the town, a few goons at the docks, some rats in the sewers, only the three bossfights are a bit more challenging. I enjoyed the game so far, because there are quite a few NPCs and most have to say a few words, or you can play Blackjack in a casino. Key conversations use multiple choice answers and may lead to a fight or a peaceful resolution. I began to draw a little map of the town with all its shops - until I found out that there is always an arrow on the minimap, which you just have to follow to lead you to the next event. This dumbs down the experience a lot, why should you listen to the conversations and search the town at all if you just have to follow the arrow? Anyway, you will soon reach Chapter 2 - which plays outside town and completely different. No more talk, just fights. First you have to cross a desert full of zombies (and large scorpions), but you can just outrun nearly all of them. Then you have to find your way through a little maze full of rottweilers, then through a mansion with gangsters using submachineguns (and rottweilers), then a cellar full of (aggressive) rats. You just have to find your way and kill anything getting in your way. (Nearly) no conversations, no puzzles, and at the end a bossfight. At least I think it is the end, because I have not been able to defeat the boss so far. He throws bombs, shoots you with a submachinegun, conjures vines to tie you and has a punch that kills you with one hit. A full hit with my shotgun costs him a perceived 3% of his life points. There is also a Chapter 3 and a bonus chapter, but I probably won't be able to see them. Conclusion: Twin-stick shooter with gangster story and challenging boss fights.
This review will be based on my experience while playing this game. i decided to write it in english so i can approach more people. [ i have not finished it yet for specific reasons i will write down bellow ] Pecaminosa is an indie game developed by Cereals Games, a small company based in the Azores Islands in the atlantic ocean, my home town, published by BadLand Publishing in 27 May of 2021. They have a small team of less than 10 people. This is a pixel art 2.5D hub world game set in The United States (1940s) with an excellent immersive and atmospheric town. Have in mind that i dont like these type of games even though i was born in the 90s myself.
I will give so pros and some cons and why you should buy it or not, but before that i will speak a bit of the story and the plot.
Like i said previously, it is set in the 1940s, and you play as John Souza, a former detective that will try to solve some mysterious crimes going around town. He travels (by foot) the whole game from hub to hub, speaking to multiple NPCs and with an easy navigation. The overall transversal... all in all, it is on point. There isn't much plot because you dont get to know much from the main character nor the side ones. Other than that, i really liked the writing, it has a lot of humour and it is well writen in general. Talking about the writing, this is where i personally found the first issue, which is, the type of letter. It gave me constant headaches, i found the menu type of letter more suitable for dialogues. The exploration is rewarding, and i was quite suprised for a game like this to have such an amazing and rewarding exploration. There are some sewers and tombs filled with cash and bullets, cash that i found useless at some point because there is no explanation where you can use it for. Take in mind that you can explore, and there are places that the main story dont take you. The combat is simple, shoot, dodge, and melee. But well, let me talk about the pros and the cons now.
the pros
- Well balanced combat - A lot of easter eggs and humour - Good and imersive music [lack of different type of music] in some areas like tombs and caves the music is the same as if you were in a bar or in town. - Good animations and good control scheme - Puzzles - Good variety of enemies - Very creative boss fights - excellent exploration - multiple secret rooms - tombs - hordes of enemies - an amazing vibe - multiple scenarios (town, desert, graveyard, etc) - stats tree - variety of weapons (shotgun, rifle, pistol and a super weapon - late game)
the cons
- Melee combat could be much better, you cant move while fighting in hand to hand - there should be a better quest log, letting you know which quest is the main and which one is side quest - like i previously said, i dont like the type of letter in dialogues - John looks more of a mercenary than a detective - like i previously mentioned, lack of suitable music in different scenarios - some puzzles have no information on them - weird camera angles in some corridors at caves Now there is a specific issue i would like to talk about, that made me stop playing the game. I don't think devs thought this thru while developing this game. And there are 2 situations i would like to talk about, first was... Playing a side quest (the tomb of the kings) at the end of it there is a boss, i found myself without any bullets left (because there are multiple spiders nests in the tomb), and by trying to fight the boss without bullets is literally impossible, you just can't kill it, and the biggest problem is, there is no bullet drops other than killing enemies. Other than that is the fact that, if you want to give up from the boss, you can't leave the area, in order to do so, you have to load an old save game, which will make you lose all the progress until then. There is another issue related to the previous one, there is tons, and tons and tons of HP drops, much more than bullet drops, and there was times that i had a full inventory of 10 beers and no bullets at all. Also, once you die, you have the same HP you had before you died. On the other hand, if you explore, you find multiple secret rooms with loot, but even that sometimes isn't even enough when fighting bosses. The boss i am at now is the guy on the theater, and my problem is the same as the unfinished boss in the tomb of the kings, i get to kill him in his first stage, but once he spawns his bodyguards in his 2nd stage, i have to fight by hand to hand because there is no bullet drop at all. All in all, it is a good, fun and unique pixel art game. Support the small companies. I hope they fix some of these issues so i can get back into the game in the future and replay it
if i had to give a final rate, i would probably be a 7 out of 10
The first ~2 hours of this game are really, really good. Good atmosphere, great pixel art, animations are well done, music's smooth and fitting for the setting, and the characters (while a little awkwardly written) are kind of fitting for a noir-esque mystery. And then around the 2 hour mark it chucks everything but the pixel art and music out the window and turns it into a fantasy ARPG. Throw in two absolutely terribly designed boss fights (they're so badly designed that I think it's possible to softlock the game depending on your build) and a final boss which is possibly the worst boss fight I have ever seen in a video game. I'm not exaggerating, I'm struggling to think of one worse. I really didn't want to dislike this game, but I feel like the game I was shown and sold on was just a cover for the game I played.
I think this is a very interesting pixel, action, rpg, with a lot of potential. But some of my complains is the pacing of the story, that can make some story bits and actions a little to rushed. I would love more atmospheric music/sounds, cause at some places it feels that there is a lack of sound or sound diversity. More items, there aren't a lot of items, or i wish there was more. And finaly i would want more puzzels. But the game is still a pleasant experience, that i would recommed
Noir ARPG + good story/music + interesting mix = Explore the city filled with crime and mobsters. Fists first, talk later type of style. Cool ambience, pixel art and all that jazz. Or I should say, almost saw. The screen shake was so atrocious during the final boss I could barely see what was happening and there is no way to disable it.
I also wanted to like this game. Loved the first episode, with all of the missions, story, etc... Episode 2 just doesn´t work for me. Too unforgiving. No way to save. It got rather tedious there. Will be trying to play in the future, but the desert level sucks hard. Can´t pass that fn level!
#Pecaminosa
