https://youtu.be/dsMhzvwCs54 I feel duped. I like horror, and gore, and games. This is none of these If you like nudity and anime...Buy Sakura angels, because this barely has any of that either. I bought this because i liked Zero time dilemma...it aint that either. Notice how all the other reviewers either got the game free, or did the beta. Retag the game, and i'll delete the review. I'm a horror fan, and i feel like i've been had.
I was looking forward to this game, but shortly after starting it I realized, it is not for me :( It's hard to read, I just wish all of those many characters would stop their babbling. And this is a bad thing, because it is a VN. I just couldn't get into it. I don't like the "humor", but this is just my taste. What really annoyed me was the "Japanese setting", while none of this feels Japanese in the slightest. More like Euopeans fantasize and imagine about Japanese culture and life -_- So it would have been much more convincing if the developers just set up their story in a European country. It might be a lot better this way, maybe to the point of slightly enjoyable. Oh well. I'll force myself to play the game though, just in case. Oh, and one thing. This game has no skip function (just like their other game, Final Theosis, where every path except one dialoge is exactly the same... and was still better than Pawn), so this is a real no-go for me. Minizes the replay value, most people don't want to read the same stuff more than once just to get other endings.
NOTE: This game was given to me by the developer for review purposes. This did not influence my review in any way.
========================================================== ---------------------------------------OVERVIEW------------------------------------- ==========================================================
Pawn is an adult visual novel from new indie developer, ODBear Studios, made using Tyrano Builder. In Pawn, you play Tokunaga Susumu, a young male substitute high school teacher returning to his unnamed Japanese home town after being away for years, travelling through Europe. Shortly after meeting the somewhat odd group of teachers running the school, you take over teaching the 12th grade class in their last week of school. But you'll soon discover that neither Susumu nor the story are quite what they seem.
========================================================== ----------------------------------------QUALITY------------------------------------- ==========================================================
Graphics - Background graphics are good, although repeated often. Character graphics are a mixed bunch. The style is simple and almost childlike sometimes, and includes some super-deformed faces at various points. There's a fair bit of gratuitous violence and some weird gratuitous nudity, but it's not a Sakura game by any means, and nor is it meant to be. The character style grew on me a little the more I played and some of the animations were quite good. Being made in Tyrano Builder's Visual Novel Studio, Pawn offers no obvious graphics options, and like most visual novels, the graphics hardware required to play is very minimal. Sound - Music is mostly calm melodies, with some slightly heavier sounds when the action picks up. There are only very limited sound effects, but what is there is good enough. Sadly there are no voice overs. Gameplay - Pawn plays like a typical visual novel with very few choice points. The vast majority of the game is spent reading text and clicking the mouse to advance the story. There are only very few choice points, but if you save and reload carefully you should be able to see all of the story branches without having to backtrack very far at all. I completed the game 100% on a single play through with very only occasional reloading and next to no backtracking. If memory serves me correctly there are six endings. The story is interesting, but fairly contrived and, especially towards the end, rather unbelievable. Some of the characters are quite likeable, while others deserve what they get. It's a real shame the English translation wasn't at least put through a spelling / grammar checker, or even better, given to a professional editor or proof reader before release; there are countless misspellings and incorrect grammar that would have been picked up even by something like Microsoft Word. The game includes achievements, which worked for me, even though the Steam overlay stopped working for some reason early on.
========================================================== -------------------------------------PROS & CONS------------------------------------ ==========================================================
Pros: + Relatively interesting story + I learned two slang terms, which I had to look up on Urban Dictionary. + Good sense of humour in places. The chief's tendency towards certain meeting places was very funny. :) + Steam achievements + Trading cards Cons: - Terrible English - Story dragged on in places and became less believable towards the end - No voice overs
========================================================== --------------------------------------CONCLUSION----------------------------------- ==========================================================
Pawn is a relatively solid adult visual novel that would be vastly improved for its English readers / players if some more love were given to its English translation. After my review was a little to mean I removed it. I played some more of it... I was able to complete the game after about a hour (with the best end). Now For $6.99 I do not think this is worth the money. Now i want to point out this game takes place in a high school so there for it is a game about lolis. Right? Wrong. The dev was very mad at me for saying it was a creepy. Not to forget the (High quality backgrounds). The (30 sound tracks) Where only 3 or 4 play over and over again (The bad sound quality) I had to turn the sound off when i played it again, but on the main menu there is no option menu. So you have to do it in game. Don't play this don't buy this
Having been a while since i played a visual novel i decided to Purchase this game as it came up on my wishlist for sale at £3.49 thats 30% saving it met my basic requirements lol steam achievements and steam trading cards. Having the tag with "nudity" did make me think that people may think that i'm some kind of perv but ah well let them think what they will, it also had the tags of horror, violent and gore ..... The introduction to the game could really do with some work as you start the game believing your a school teacher travelling back home who ends up investigating things however that is not the case as you will find out. There is no Nudity other than one split second scene if you blink you will miss it! There's a lot of surgestive themes and wording to make your mind wander however nothng really too direct which isn't a joke. The game feels badly translated a bit constantly mixing up the words him and her and as the scene is set in Japan you really wouldn't expect the people to be saying words like "geezer" and "mate" the tone sounds very cockney. Partially the game feels like it was made on the film SAW Another problem i found was running in full screne mode made the camera mode not work properly so i had to flick back through to the windowed mode to resolve that problem although i did seem to be taking pictures of every inch of the room as the clues wernt exactly easy to find. I found that it was a good idea to save quite frequent for point of achievements, it is a shame in a way that in some free time interogation mode that you cant seem to question everyone, i found it handy to save at the point of "i have to find their weakness" as some of the achievements are rude answers that you wouldn't normally say so it's handy to get the achievement and reload, also there is multiple endings so it saves a full replay, dialogue can be skipped however only partially and it still writes it out it just sort of fast forwards and hits enter for you lol. There's not much violence or Gore either just some pictures with blood which i wouldn't lose any sleep over. The on thing that has annoyed me about the game is it has been wrote to the sense of "all men are perverted" "all men are the same" "all men want only one thing" the characters are constantly getting accused of things and kicked in the gonads when they haven't actually done anything and somehow it's ok, there's also a teacher who likes to joke around but keeps getting his nose busted and some how it's supposed to be ok in a school staff room, the female characters seem to like to make things up about the men and then lashing out with a freaky stare on their face, their emotions when they are talking don't always seem to match what they are actually saying. That being said i found some of the tone and story to be funny and i plan to complete the game with the different endings and get all the achievements it give it a 7/10 it could do with some work.
A really good game that plays like a movie, I loved its story and the interactive parts when you interrogate people. Good characters, good plot, funny dialogs and suspense really go well together. I played the game in two days and to be honest, I wish there could be a sequel (but that's not possible since
most endings don't end well
even the "good ending", that last one takes you on a roller coaster of emotions with a lot of informations to process.).

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
Did the beta. It was my first visual novel. and I have to say that it was pretty nice. As a manga reader and japanese culture fan (you know, THIS type of guy), I appreciated my experience. Finished it in 6 hours, doing (nearly) everything that was possible in the pre-released version. Nice work. You can buy it ! Joli travail. Voous pouvez l'acheter ! ^^
Was Very Proud To Be A Beta Tester I Will Add More To My Review Once Ive Complted The Game I Really Like It So Far
