You are an Exile, struggling to survive on the dark continent of Wraeclast, as you fight to earn power that will allow you to exact your revenge against those who wronged you. Path of Exile is an online Action RPG set in a dark fantasy world. The game is completely free and will never be pay-to-win.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.
Charts
Each storefront's own chart, in its own country — the closest public signal to sales where none is published. A country missing from a list is one we don't collect there, not one where the game doesn't chart.
No United States chart position — it charts only in the markets below.

Very deep, but very chaotic at end game so I die a lot.
Thirteen years after its initial launch, the original Path of Exile remains a masterclass in complexity and an absolute powerhouse in the ARPG genre. Despite its sequel heavily dominating headlines in Early Access, the 2026 state of PoE 1—anchored by the recent Patch 3.29: Curse of the Allflame league—proves that the original game isn’t going anywhere. While PoE 2 leans into slower, tactical, "Souls-like" combat, PoE 1 has proudly doubled down on its identity: a chaotic, screen-melting sandbox of infinite depth and speed. What Makes It Peak in 2026? Unmatched Zoom & Power Fantasy: Unlike the deliberate pacing of modern ARPGs, PoE 1 lets you break the game. Building a character that fires 50 projectiles a second and clears three screens at the press of a button is still an unmatched rush. A Sandbox of 13 Years of Content: Nearly every mechanic introduced over a decade of development (Delve, Heist, Expedition, Harvest) is woven into the endgame Atlas. The level of content variety is staggeringly vast compared to any competitor. The Definitive ARPG Economy: The economy—driven by trading functional currency items like Chaos and Divine Orbs—remains the gold standard for multiplayer ARPGs, creating a thrilling market dynamic every single season. Thriving Parallel Support: Grinding Gear Games did not abandon the game; it still receives regular, massive four-month seasonal content drops and dedicated balance cycles. How About The Disadvantages & Outdated Elements? Cruel Onboarding for New Players: Trying to learn PoE 1 in 2026 without an extensive video guide, a build planner, and a spreadsheet is a recipe for a breakdown. The game severely lacks native onboarding tools. Outdated Click-to-Move Controls: Going back to click-to-move and strict armor socket-linking after experiencing the fluid WASD movement and separated gem systems of PoE 2 feels like stepping backward in time. The Infamous "Campaign Tax": Having to trudge through the mandatory 10-act campaign to reach the endgame for every single new character you make remains a tedious chore. Conclusion. If you can push past the brutal learning curve and the archaic inventory requirements, Path of Exile 1 is a magnificent monolith. It provides a deeper, more customizable experience than almost any other game on the market. Verdict: 9/10
