paper - a game of folding is exactly what it says on the tin: a game where you fold virtual paper with your mouse to create various shapes in a certain amount of moves. controls are simple, but need some getting used to: holding the left mouse button and moving the mouse folds, holding the right mouse button unfolds, moving with shift held down snaps to angles, ctrl snaps to corners (both can be toggled while playing a level as well), and that's about it, but actually creating the desired shapes is not easy. there are 66 levels, grouped thematically, but they also get trickier later. each starts with a square-shaped paper and a silhouette, there's no timer, but there's a fold limit. steps are recorded at the bottom of the screen and you can go back and forth between them, which is the local version of undo/redo and it works really well. obviously, if you go back to, say, step 2 and start folding, the rest after it will disappear, but another excellent thing is when you finish a level, you can still look at your steps and think of ways to fine-tune them, and only move on to the next challenge when you want to. tutorials open up one by one, but the contents of the other packs are all available when you unlock them with stars you get via the 3-star rating system, based on how accurately you can recreate the shapes in question. 85% accuracy gets you 1 star, 2 stars for 90% and 3 for 95%, so no need to reach 100% to perfect a level from a star rating aspect. achievements are awarded for completing every level in a pack for at least 1 star, and there's one for getting 100% on every level. this all sounds easy (except for the last one), but believe me, it is not (I said it twice already, so it must be true). I should have started with this, but here goes: the presentation is perfect. clean, elegant, slick design, as soon as the menu appeared, I was in awe. the audio is great too, the sound of folding paper and other effects, and the music, which is 'semi-procedural' according to the store page, isn't intrusive and doesn't get annoying over time. there are separate volume sliders, resolution options, windowed and borderless windowed mode, leaderboards (global and friends only), confirmation prompts, everything. I wish other developers would check it out too, this is how it should be done. I might have mentioned that the game is really challenging, but maybe others won't find it as difficult as I did. you definitely need to be in the right mindset to comprehend how folding this way or that will affect things, but experimentation is allowed and encouraged, thanks to the fantastically implemented step-by-step undo/redo I described above. I'm aware that I have very limited brainpower and don't mind skipping or missing out on content if it's beyond my capabilities, so I won't hold it against the game that I won't be able to finish it, let alone 3-star everything, I simply can't wrap (or fold) my head around it, and at the time of writing I couldn't even unlock the final 2 level packs. that said, I wouldn't mind if the game had something to aid players in need somehow. I'm sure there will be guides eventually, and I don't want to take the challenge away from others by making requirements lower for 1 star (maybe 75%) or lower star requirements for level packs, but a built-in hint system could be useful, as time-consuming it must be to implement it, or a setting in the options menu to unlock every level. some other games do it too, and in this case levels aren't grouped by difficulty and achievements are for level completion only, so it could be a good compromise and would let everyone take a shot at every level. either way, I really, really enjoyed what I played and can recommend the game to casual paper folders and origami masters alike, though I think it's a bit pricey. then again, I'm legendarily cheap and it will definitely keep you busy for quite some time. my non-existant hat's off to anyone who can do every level with 100% precision.
Virtuell Papier falten.
Even as a semi-practicing origami artist, i still can't beat this game i love it
It's a nice relaxing puzzle game. Run's very smooth, Controls are good. No complaints whatsoever. Can recommend to anybody that is looking for a good puzzle game.
Pretty much exactly what the screenshots promise!
At the time of review, I am the 3rd person in the world to have 100% this game. A unique original puzzle game that is deceptively hard, and will bend your mind for hours. Graphics are not optimized, and I strongly suggest lowering the default resolution to reduce the load on your GPU.
"Paper - A Game of Folding" is an unusual minimalist origami puzzle game, origami being the Japanese art form of paper folding. We've all seen those origami cranes. Here, you're given a target shape and you have to work out on your own how to fold the bit of paper in a limited number of folds to recreate the target shape. Frankly, this is far from the dumbest idea for a puzzle game I've seen. I swear, some of the awful games I've seen on Steam are starting to give me the thousand yard stare. Not so here! One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic low quality vector art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the mediocre 2D visuals. The game features extremely lazy, minimalist "art", of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping/swiping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. This is indistinguishable from a mobile app, but they put this on Steam instead of the app stores by mistake. Was it rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all)?. Regardless, for all intents and purposes "Paper - A Game of Folding" might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 130,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Although I will say I'm disappointed that I see more people playing Russian asset flips than genuinely made amateur stuff like this... sure, it's not at all a great gaming experience, but it deserves better than that. This is why asset flips are so harmful, they choke out the visibility that genuinely made stuff like this should have. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 130,000+ games on Steam? "Paper - A Game of Folding" has the total ripoff price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Torchlight 2", "Batman: Arkham Origins" or "Middle Earth - Shadow of War". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. Although because this is a genuinely made game, and it's not outright crap, once more I'll say if you can live with the negatives I point out in my review, go for it. But this game is certainly not a good fit for the PC gaming enthusiast public that makes up the majority of gamers on Steam.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
This is a good simple well executed indie game. If you like origami and tangrams, you will enjoy. Some levels are definitely very hard, some are not. Nice music too
