Downloaded first time a quite some time ago, and couldn't get it to run. Was just going through my library and remembered I hadn't ever gotten to actually play the game, so thought I'd install it again to see if it's been patched up and would run this time... nope. Launch it, get the publisher then Unreal splashes and the loading spinner... once I see an opening graphic for about 1.2 seconds, it just closes down... no message or anything. Didn't see anything telling in a quick google of my issue across support and discussion threads... so just calling TOD on this title for me.

A game that never got a chance to fulfill it's potential :(

Pagan: Absent Gods is an action RPG built around brutality, speed, and relentless combat, delivering an experience that feels heavily inspired by classic hack-and-slash adventures while still introducing enough unique ideas to stand apart from many genre imitators. Developed by Mad Head Games, the title throws players into a dark fantasy universe filled with ruined civilizations, forgotten deities, and endless violence where survival depends on reflexes, timing, and mastery of powerful heroes. While the game struggles with certain balancing and technical issues, its intense combat system and strong atmosphere allow it to remain a surprisingly engaging experience for fans of fast-paced dungeon crawling and loot-driven progression. The game immediately establishes a grim tone through its world design and lore. The setting revolves around abandoned gods, ancient corruption, and civilizations collapsing beneath supernatural horrors. Rather than embracing heroic fantasy filled with optimism and adventure, Pagan: Absent Gods leans heavily into darker themes of destruction and suffering. The environments are drenched in decay, with ruined temples, cursed wastelands, and blood-soaked battlegrounds constantly reminding players that this world has already been broken long before the story begins. This oppressive atmosphere gives the game a distinct identity and helps create a sense of danger throughout the entire journey. Combat is unquestionably the centerpiece of the experience and easily its strongest feature. Battles are aggressive, fast, and demanding, forcing players to constantly dodge attacks, reposition carefully, and unleash abilities with precision. Unlike slower action RPGs where raw statistics often overpower skill, Pagan places significant emphasis on player reflexes and situational awareness. Enemies attack in large groups, bosses use devastating patterns, and even ordinary encounters can become deadly when players lose focus for a moment. The game rewards aggression and mechanical mastery, creating combat encounters that often feel tense and satisfying once players fully understand their chosen hero. One of the most impressive aspects of the game is the variety of playable heroes available. Instead of offering traditional interchangeable classes, Pagan introduces multiple distinct characters with completely different mechanics, skills, and progression systems. Some heroes excel at brutal close-range combat while others focus on ranged attacks, elemental powers, traps, or support abilities. Each character feels unique enough to completely change how the game is played, encouraging experimentation and repeated playthroughs. This hero-based structure adds substantial replay value because mastering one character rarely prepares players for another. The progression system revolves around loot collection, crafting, and build customization. Defeating enemies rewards players with weapons, armor, magical relics, and crafting resources that gradually increase combat effectiveness. Much of the game’s addictive quality comes from constantly searching for better gear and discovering combinations that enhance specific abilities or playstyles. Legendary equipment and advanced crafting mechanics allow players to create increasingly powerful builds, transforming weaker heroes into devastating forces capable of surviving the game’s more punishing encounters. The loot system successfully captures the rewarding cycle that defines many memorable action RPGs. The game’s pacing also deserves recognition because it rarely allows momentum to fade. Combat encounters flow rapidly into exploration, boss fights, and progression upgrades, creating a gameplay loop that remains energetic for most of the experience. Movement feels responsive, abilities recharge quickly, and the sheer number of enemies keeps battles intense throughout longer sessions. Players who enjoy highly active combat systems where movement and positioning are critical will likely appreciate how consistently the game pushes them into dangerous situations. Visually, Pagan: Absent Gods delivers a strong dark fantasy aesthetic despite not having the production scale of larger genre competitors. The environments are atmospheric and detailed enough to maintain immersion, with crumbling ruins, corrupted landscapes, and monstrous enemy designs reinforcing the game’s grim worldbuilding. Spell effects and combat animations are flashy and impactful without becoming completely chaotic, allowing players to track enemy attacks even during massive battles. Boss encounters in particular stand out thanks to their intimidating visual designs and large-scale presentation. The soundtrack and audio design also contribute significantly to the experience. Heavy orchestral themes and dark ambient music help intensify combat encounters while reinforcing the bleak tone of the world. Sound effects during combat feel weighty and impactful, making attacks and abilities satisfying to use. Combined with the game’s aggressive pacing, the audio design helps maintain tension during difficult encounters and contributes to the overall feeling of surviving within a hostile environment. However, the game is not without its problems. One of its most noticeable weaknesses is inconsistency in balancing and progression. Some heroes feel considerably stronger or more polished than others, which can make experimentation frustrating for players hoping for equal viability across the roster. Difficulty spikes also occasionally feel excessive rather than rewarding, especially during encounters where overwhelming enemy numbers leave little room for recovery. While challenge is clearly part of the game’s identity, certain moments cross the line from demanding into unnecessarily punishing. The game also suffers from some repetitive mission design and technical roughness. Certain objectives become predictable after extended play sessions, and grinding for resources or equipment can occasionally slow down progression. Interface quirks, minor bugs, and occasional pacing issues reveal the limitations of the game’s development scale. Some systems feel underdeveloped, particularly when compared to the depth and polish found in larger action RPG franchises. These flaws prevent the game from fully reaching the level of refinement it clearly aims for. Despite these shortcomings, Pagan: Absent Gods remains highly enjoyable because its core gameplay is so satisfying. Few independent action RPGs manage to deliver combat this intense while also offering meaningful hero variety and rewarding customization systems. The game consistently captures the excitement of overcoming impossible odds through mechanical skill and careful character building. Even when frustration appears, the thrill of mastering difficult encounters keeps the experience compelling. What ultimately makes Pagan: Absent Gods memorable is its ambition. The game clearly strives to deliver a large-scale dark fantasy action RPG experience filled with brutal combat, diverse heroes, and rewarding progression. While it may not achieve perfection in every area, the passion behind its design remains obvious throughout the adventure. The hero variety, aggressive gameplay, and oppressive atmosphere combine to create an experience that feels distinct within the crowded hack-and-slash genre. For players who enjoy challenging action RPGs focused on combat mastery, loot hunting, and fast-paced encounters, Pagan: Absent Gods offers a rewarding journey filled with brutal battles and satisfying progression. Its flaws are real, but they are balanced by strong combat mechanics, impressive class variety, and a dark fantasy world that remains engaging from beginning to end. Rating: 7/10
