Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/KEW6d5g34ZE This is a fine horror game for what it is. It's an indie VR game from a small dev team, so as long as you keep your expectations low, this is something I can recommend for VR horror fans. Keep in mind, most of the gameplay is solving puzzles while exploring a haunted mansion. There are some action sequences as well, that consist of chases, staying still, and sneaking slowly by Mike (your neighbor). While this game is better than most VR horror releases, it's underwhelming if you've recently played Madison VR (like me). The visuals are good for an indie VR game, but not great IMO. They are inconsistent in quality as although the mansion map looks good overall, the character models are lackluster. The lighting is good overall, although it is too dark in certain areas, the flashlight really helps illuminate the way and is very useful (unlike many other VR horror games). The soundmix is also inconsistent, with some nice soundwork that keeps you on your toes, but with wooden VOs and spatial audio that misses the mark at times. Game is running on the Unreal Engine 4. On my RTX 3080, on ultra graphical settings, I was getting mostly 90 fps. I did not experience any major issues or bugs, just minor ones like my avatar hands drifting away from my motion controller position or the flashlight temporarily despawning after dying. You do have full locomotion, along with smooth or snap turning (with degree of turn / speed of turn). You also have button crouch, so you can play comfortably seated or standing. Although there is no height adjustment and I felt I was just a bit higher off the ground than I should have been. Overall, this is a nice indie horror game. Although, it may be a bit overpriced given the production values and the fact that the game can be beaten in 4-5 hours for most people. The story is a bit cliche as well. However, since it's definitely better than most VR horror games, I can easily recommend this for VR horror fans. You may enjoy it more than I did.
Okay, against some of the bad reviews I bought the game and played it on the Index... Seemed to be a brave decision reading all the feedback. But it was not as bad as I thought it might be. I even give it a good review now though it still has some "problems". First of all: Yes, the hand orientation is wrong for Index players, the usual "approx 45° misalignment" we see in some games, I am astonished THIS repeating misalignment is still a thing. It would be nice the devs would simply adjust this instead of giving a calibration feature, BUT the calibration feature is not as bad and as complicated as some think and wrote about. You do not even have to "reach" the virtual hands or put your hands into them, just stay in your position and hold your hands up into the air in the orientation shown before you and press the trigger, done. It was no problem playing the game with this calibration change. Though the calibration does not get saved, you need to do this again after a complete restart, but that was just done in like 10 seconds. Gameplay and content wise I did not expect anything and I did not read, much as usual. The game has some jump scares, but the "horror" aspect was not too strong for me. I really loved, after understanding it, the gameplay mechanic when you encounter Michael, but I am not going to talk about that further to prevent spoilers. Most of the game is a big riddle escape room... Find stuff, think about what to do with it, where it belongs and solve them to proceed. Apart from 1-2 situations, that got me a bit frustrated at first, I pretty much ran through them as they are not too complicated and no real issue for people with puzzle game experience (then rather on the easy side). All in all, thinking back about the game after finishing, it was mostly logical, but I see (and experienced myself) some issues with giving too much room without a hint system. Including 2 passages where I took a bit longer I beat the game in about 4 hours and 15 minutes (while streaming, so it probably it would have taken even less time). I wish it would have been a bit longer. The save points are fair, also if in doubt just save in between and run to a save point near you if you want to make sure you don't want to redo things in case you fail. The difficulty is probably medium to lower as I do not see myself as the best player and had no real struggle to complete it. The biggest issue of the game could be the lack of hints, as sometimes the player might not know if you need to proceed in the current location or if you need to head to somewhere else - WHEREVER THAT MIGHT BE... And then that could end in running around for hours if you do not have the brilliant idea all the sudden. Adding hint systems do not hurt, but could really help - players that do not need it just do not have to use it then :). From a technical standpoint we already have stated the hand orientation on Index. Also for the developer I like to add that streaming the game was a bit hard as it ignores when I change my playspace (s I turn around 180 degree for story game streaming to face the camera, while my usual playspace is for Mixed Reality and my back towards the camera). The game orientates at the initial playspace of SteamVR and ignores changes, but streamers might rotate their playspace dynamically, so it would be nice if the game rotates with the playspace as well. This is only the second amongst hundreds of games I streamed now, that ignores a change of playspace. I even tried to change my playspace first and then starting the game, but it was again wrongly aligned. Also the "first time grabbing" of objects seem to be a bit odd and the collision points to walls are a bit far so I got pushed back a lot of times when I just wanted to look at something a bit closer. So all in all I liked it, I just wish it would have had more content. But I am glad I decided to buy and play it - I had "fun".
I really enjoy this title and I will update the review later into the game. I played the demo before. As a PCVR player we don't get many titles like these. OVRDARK has really good environment design with regards to textures, props, lighting. There is a strong sense of immersion. Regarding the setting it takes strong cues from RE7. It seems well optimized, I have no problems running this on ultra on a 2019 aging gaming laptop. I have not experienced the controller offset problem that has been reported by other users. I play on a Quest 3 via Link cable.
Very surprised with this game in the purest resident evil style. I have completed the game and I enjoyed it very much, you can tell that the developers have put a lot of care and care in this indie game. I wanted to play it since I saw it on PS5 and I have waited for the PCVR version to play it. I have used MetaQuest3 to play it and I have not had any problem during my game. I highly recommend this game especially if you like the horror genre. It has a lot of interactive elements and puzzles. And you will have to run for your life on more than one occasion!!! I had some scary momments here! Score: 9/10 My gear: MetaQuest 3
Sí, tiene bugs. Sí, tiene doblaje en castellano. Sí, bebe mucho de otros juegos como Resident Evil. Sí, en Vr me he acojonado demasiado y sí, es perfecto para ponérselo a gente que viene de visita a casa
The controllers from the Valve Index cannot be used for this game
The height of the player is ALWAYS wrong for me. The game does not give me an option to change that and also this is one of the extrem rare cases where OVR Advanced settings could also not fix it (The playspace in SteamVR is moving but without any changes in the game). Sadly, therefore for me unplayable even it looked really promising. Also no other VR game ever, forced me to use a "hand calibration", because the defaullt position is twisted. Thats really the first time is see that kind of problem and hand-calibration option in any VR game. Using a Quest3 with VirtualDesktop. Devs please fix that and I will come back again, but with the current problems I cannot recommend it.
Doesn't really play well with Steam VR or virtual desktop. Only way I could get this to play was to connect directly to PC via the cable. even then, unless I loaded it up using the Oculus app, the controllers are in the wrong orientation for the hands. Well, I did manage to play was ok. but I can't be bothered to get the cable out every time. So I just haven't gone back to it.
