An emotional dark comedy about robots doing therapy. In Robotherapy, you're a robot therapist in a dystopian society that killed all the humans, but is still not happy. Treat patients, meet weird robots and enter their minds. If killing all humans doesn't bring happiness, then what does?

Listen, I think it takes a lot of brass to submit something you've created for public consumption. I applaud the effort here to create an experience that seems thoughtful and sincere. But if I'm being honest with my critique I can't genuinely recommend Robotherapy for a few reasons: - For the asking price of $5 what you are getting is a linear story with zero gameplay that is over in less than an hour. Absolutely nothing you do as a "player" impacts anything. There are a couple "minigames" that don't work properly and do not matter anyway so there is no incentive to do literally anything. - The story delves into themes of mental health and, through the dialogue, provides cognitive behavioral-adjacent "advice". Some people may find it helpful and even insightful. But some people may find it straight up discouraging and possibly even a little destructive. Please folks do not replace professional mental health care with entertainment media consumption. - The plot is very flimsy and reads more like the internal narrative of the writer more than from fully realized and separate characters. - Expanding on my previous statement: reading the game description I thought Robotherapy was going to be a darkly comedic point-and-click about the existential dilemma of self-aware robots after the extermination of humans. I was looking for a juicy expressive narrative delving into any of a myriad hilarious possibilities, even if short. But this is really just talking about a bunch of super standard cognitive distortions that many of us - - as humans - - experience at one point or another. It didn't really land in a comedic way for me in the ways I was hoping it would. - One of the bullet points in the Features description gives away the entire "twist" (which is admittedly very predictable anyway). Robotherapy is "cute" and I thought the art direction/aesthetic was fine. I don't even mind being passively led through a "game" experience if the writing is compelling enough. I think there is potential for the dev if they keep at it but for now, again, I am unable to recommend this one. 2.5 out of 5 loose bolts for me
Alright. Robotherapy is done and dusted. This is a visual novel with a couple super lite shooter sections, focused on the mental health of robots after killing all humans. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3430744287 You play as Smokes, a delusional megalomaniacal robot who decides he is going to be a robotherapist, and the best one in the world at that. Although he is really about as bad a therapist as you could be, lol. And so anyway, that's what he does. He becomes a robotherapist. A decision he makes while sitting at a cafe. Early on, he meets another robotherapist named Back, who becomes a mentor to Smokes despite Smokes of course acting as if he doesn't need one. Smokes begins taking clients. First a robot named Quantum, then a robot named Whatever. And he also meets a robot named R, whose idea it was to kill all humans to begin with. Throughout the game, while Smokes (and Back) are treating Quantum and Whatever, it really ends up with Smokes receiving some inadvertent treatment himself. And there is of course a big reveal towards the end that has the other robots rallying to help Smokes out. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3430744294 In my opinion, what this game really does well is present mental health issues in a way that treats mental health issues not as something everybody can understand and identify with, but simply as what they are, with no recrimination or people feeling a need to act as if they can identify with said problems. And yet, I think the real message is that you really aren't alone even if you have to be willing to address these issues yourself. IDK. I'm not somebody who identifies with these issues on a personal level, but I think being open to learning about them is important. And the comedy presentation is effective in my opinion. And so, with that in mind, the dialogue is funny and witty, with a lot of banter, some fourth wall breaking, and a couple other characters that fill out the roster and the game. The graphics and audio are simplistic, but effective in enhancing the game. And I think the developer really had some fun making this game. It shines through. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3430790547 This is an enjoyable experience. And it's currently 50% off at the time of this review, bringing it down to $2.49, which is a very accessible price. The entire game is only a little more than an hour long, making it not much of a commitment. I'd say it's worth a look. Robotherapy has a killer premise: being a robot therapist in a world without humans.. but the execution is just okay. The dry, cynical humor is the highlight, gameplay wise? It's extremely thin. A rare case where the game is simultaneously too expensive for its length and too repetitive to last another minute. Your dialogue options don't feel like they carry much weight; the story is mostly on rails. Minigames are clunky. The non-reading segments feel like filler. If you are into visual novels, robots, dark humor and an apocalyptic vibe- Wait for a sale.
I think that it is not worthy the money spent given how short it is and how linear it is. However it has some humour and made me smile a couple of times.
I don't play games often, but I always find myself playing this when I'm stuck in a rut. In all seriousness, some of the techniques taught in the game has helped me decipher my own emotions and self-criticism. I recommend for anybody that needs a well written pick me up/emotional skills.
The story starts with funny then transforms further to deep and reflective. It was very nice experience and I could not hold myself to recommend this game to friend in real world. It is not very long but still worth its price. It is like going to the movies vibe. Make yourself a cup of coffee/tea, crawl under the blanket and start the game, laught, consider just enjoy. You will not regret it.
This game is excellent. It's a work of art. Its role can be the same as that of literature: to look for something, somewhere, in order to try and understand; and why not, in order to try and heal that part of ourselves that has always been crying. Awesome work, Lucas.
filosofia, muita terapia e robôs
I'm a therapist (for humans) and this was extremely well done. It teaches some real concepts and tools in an engaging way and doesn't overstay its welcome. I'm impressed.
