I used to play this game in my head as a kid staring out the car window so the fact that someone turned it into a real video game and then got Makeup and Vanity Set to do the soundtrack for it is pretty surreal. Can't reccomend this game enough.
Now you can be bad at rhythm games in 3D as well as 2D
The soundtrack is amazing. The game, total trash.. boring and doesn't even accept keyboard inputs.

That's definitely one of the most unique rhythm games out there. After playing it for a few hours, you may start hearing rhythm while driving near streetlights (don't worry, it goes away). If you're motion sick, I do not recommend you this game. I don't know whether I'd survive it in VR, but even if I do, my neck would definitely hurt. It's possible to make a game play itself, but in doing so you ruin your fun and skip all the lamps. If you really REALLY are that bad, set timing to easy. If that isn't enough, set engine to "blaze" (slows down gameplay) and lens to "center" (all right and left lanes are replaced with center ones). The only thing that pissed me off was figuring out how to unlock detours (and I still had to use a guide as I kept messing up trying to decipher some statues) Creating a level in this game is surprisingly easy, you don't even have to use any editor tutorials (there might be only 1 or 2 existing). The editor is just so smooooooth I love it!
Overpass' whole concept hits very nicely all the buttons of this overplayed 'vaporwave car-driving game' genre that never really did click with me until now. The idea of watching overpassing architecture, like a child in the back of a car, is the best idea I've seen so far. The music is very nice, which is not often the case with vaporwave games, nice tunes, very catchy in some levels, put you in the trance very nicely. The gameplay is not as relaxed as the screenshots may suggest. The difficulty increases with implacable regularity at every new level and the last couple ones will take you a lot of time and memorization before you can clear them. Every level also likes to include new gameplay tricks and you'll have to adapt constantly. The game has enough additional challenges and achievements to keep you busy for several entertaining hours. There are also some 'accessibility' options that make the game easier and even an autoplaying mode for the contemplative players. The graphics are very nice and play very well on the vaporwave theme. Only problem is... the engine. This is a Unity game and it shows. Ahhhh...Unity..... What would we do without you, enabling bad games for well over a decade now. Offering hacky devs a whole palette of filters, blurs and chromatic abberrations without a care in the world for optimization...Not even a word of advice Thankfully you can tweak a bit the graphic rendering, but the performance remains pretty bad all over the board, and I did lose a couple beats because of unexpected frame freezes. But this little inconvenience didn't spoil the game for me. Ryhtm games are not a very well served genre and I can only recomend this one.
There's a few performance issues and bugs here and there, but on the whole this is one of the most fun experiences I've had with any rhythm game! A sorely underrated title. 9/10
I love rhythm games, and I'd say I'm pretty good at all rhythm games I've played so far... There's one word I can use to describe how I feel about this one. Unique. The gameplay is unique in the way of world building, movement, and music. What else is unique is the fact that some levels are fun and readable. While others you get barely any time (maybe half a second or so) to react to a left/right that was in the background, which seemingly happen at random at times. I feel like some patterns wouldn't be so bad if there was just a little more telegraphing with the upcoming movements. Some levels have things leaning left to indicate left movements, or right for right movements, but when you have back to back left, rights.... It becomes very disorienting to tell what the next movement will be, especially when sometimes they are; offscreen until a second before you're supposed to hit them, behind another object to indicate a "double hit", or straight up on white background. Might I add that the inputs, on objects, are white... So when you get a level that suddenly the background turns white *how the **** are you supposed to read those without already knowing the pattern*... Someone left a review before me and said "...Can be overwhelming at times, but hey, that's part of the fun right?" No, no it is not. I beat the my first full run, and the only time I had to restart was because of the final level (Which wasn't shocking, but the erratic almost unreadable left/rights were). The only reason why I'm leaving a negative review, is because for a casual rhythm gamer this will be hell for you. But If you're a seasoned rhythm gamer and want a challenge, and think you can tell what directional input will happen next, good luck, you'll need it. TLDR: Very cool visually, very not fun mechanically later. Also the streetlights are cool.
This is quite the new perspective on the rhythm game genre
(Pun totally intended)
Jokes aside, Overpass is one of the most interesting rhythm games I've found this year, so much so that I literally couldn't sleep peacefully in bed without this game being in my library. The gameplay in Overpass seems weird and confusing to understand when you first look at it, but once you figure out what you're supposed to do, it really made me go "Oh my god that is really clever". In Overpass, your goal is to hit directional notes that are attached to various environmental objects. The game will also challenge you to hit these notes while they're obstructed, encouraging the player to read the object's shape, movement, and/or orientation, which becomes a handy skill for the player to utilize! There are also lamps, which can look like street lamps or hanging lights. They have no directional notes on them, and are an optional note to hit for an extra challenge and higher score. What I like about the main mode "Discovery" is that it's basically a choose your own adventure game. You're able to choose which level to take on, and at the end, you get to review the whole journey you made, and you're able to play "Discovery" again to start at the beginning again and try out other paths you haven't explored yet! Oh, and of course, Overpass has a level editor, which basically increases this game's life by 10x, and gives opportunity for the community to discover how high the game's skill ceiling can truly be! and like any rhythm game I ever find, there's one rule I give to rhythm games with custom editors: If it has a custom editor, it MUST play Camellia :3 (Which surprisingly hasn't been made in the Overpass workshop yet!) Overall, I REALLY enjoyed this rhythm game. I absolutely love the concept of this game, and Studio Bean really nailed the feeling of being a kid of looking out the car window during a road trip and watching the bridges, powerlines, and street lamps fly across your view. I hope this game gets some more attention, because WOW this game was a hidden gem.
