Features:
Always keep fuel in the tank. Stay away from the creatures. Be careful. Be quiet.
Loud sounds attract trouble, and there's no way you can fight them all. Grab as much gas as you can, rescue that trapped stranger, and get back in the car before it's too late.
Travel West, through grasslands, over mountains, across deserts, and to even stranger places. Every level, roadmap, and character is randomly generated, so each trip is new.
Equip dozens of items, including medkits, shields, axes, potted plants, scavenged armor, and luggage racks.
A completely new end of the world from Finji (Canabalt, Night in the Woods).

strategy based game with lore i dont understand that is intriguing nonetheless. i love the dogs TwT
So the thing about minimalism is. You need to be clear how your game works. How your game works needs to be interesting. Neither of these is true in Overland. It has a good premise! Aliens have invaded and you're on a liminal road trip trying to stay alive. You can scavenge items and recruit other travelers and you need to maintain your car. This is all good. But the interface is clunky, explains nothing, doesn't control intuitively, and punishes you extremely for not intuiting it. For example, I got a buddy and found a new car. I fueled it, turned it on, brought both cars to the stage exit, we were both ready to leave, I selected leave, and abandoned my buddy in his fueled and running car. Why? But sometimes it's worth pushing through a game that communicates badly. Sometimes the gameplay is deep and rewarding. It isn't. Enemy moves a couple blocks. You move a couple blocks. If you're injured, you move less blocks and can't escape the enemy. If the enemy catches you, you die. Theoretically spending items makes things more interesting. This is a game that cares a lot about resources. But like. None of the resources explain what they do. You just have to guess. And then when you do get them to do their thing correctly and in the right context, which is not even remotely guaranteed, it's underwhelming as balls and you lose anyway. For example, med-kitting that guy who got hit by an enemy? Bad idea. They're in the path of the enemy. And they can't get out because the injured state has reduced their movement speed. Also carrying capacity is so low that it kind of doesn't matter if you want to use items. You shouldn't. You need that space for fuel. I do think the game looks good, and I like art games, and I think Overland skims close to being something neat. But I think it would need lots more of everything to function the way it is, or it would need to scrap the entire tactical interface for just decision making if it wanted to stay minimalist.

Absolute worst controls i've experienced in a game in ages. I mean, absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I'd be embarrassed to put out a game with these controls. On top of that, you have a fixed view. So if there's a monster on the other side of something big. To bad, you dont get to see it unless you use the "camera," mode. But as soon as you exit, you're immediately back in the fixed vies. The art style is fantastic, and the game is a great idea. Unfortunately it's wasted on controls, that I am guessing they just gave up on. I also hate that the car can't go anywhere other than two strips of road, the car has no storage, and you cant go into any buildings. The game has very little in it overall, and gets boring pretty fast.
After playing this game on the apple arcade (shame it's not on mobile) I've honestly had a great time with it. It's not only a turn based strategy game but an effective story telling game where your choices matter. It's sweet and simple, and doesn't try to be something it's not. I'd say it's worth the money and especially if you have a steam deck, as this is a fun game for travel.
Very fun to play with the puzzles, but not a ton of ability to replay. Unless you play as dogs. The dogs are good.
