outsider: after life is an overpriced mobile port of a short sci-fi point & click adventure. it's done better than most lazy ports, but it's still far from ideal and nothing justifies the price difference. it started its life on pc as a $10 game, which was clearly insane, as it's $1 on mobile, but hey, what's a tenfold increase between platforms, eh? ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ridiculous... only a month later it was already reduced to $5 permanently, and a couple months later it got a 50% discount, that's when I picked it up. it's about a robot trying to escape a hostile planet and save the universe. I'd say why bother, might as well start over at this point, but whatever. it's completely and really badly voiced, the robot's performance is the best and it was made with text-to-speech. puzzle variety is good enough, though it's kinda limited by the swiping controls of a phone. and you have to do everything multiple times and some of them are really annoying and can't be skipped. like syncing up particles, recreating constantly rotating constellations, charging fast-moving satellites, or wiping a board or the floor. what the ♥♥♥♥ was that about? literal cleaning up, every last bit. then there are a bunch of 'recreate these shapes by moving all the pieces around at the same time' puzzles, interrupted by a weird text adventure for some reason. the final set of puzzles consists of 11(!) levels of the same thing, with line endings overlapping each other, making it really hard to move what you want to move. at least there's undo or reset where necessary. controls are simple: left click to move and interact (double-click doesn't move faster, can't skip dialog either if you're a fast reader), hold to swipe, right click for the hotspot indicator, and there are toggles for a slightly more helpful cursor and text descriptions during puzzles if you're new to this sort of thing. mostly good presentation, too much orange though, and the occasional screen shake. great soundtrack, easily the best part. settings include separate volume sliders, but speech is bundled with effects and some of the audio is much louder despite the settings, it's incredibly annoying. resolution options but no windowed mode, alt+enter doesn't work either, plus v-sync, anti-aliasing, various languages and subtitles. no manual saving, only autosaves who knows when, there is no on-screen indicator. it's about 2 hours long, but only because walking speed and zooming in and out of scenes are slow and there are too many annoying puzzles (and cleaning up) to do too many times. can't recommend it, but even if I did, it would only be on a deep sale, since the mobile version only sets you back a single dollar, making 5 here way too much. there's a demo to try, which is always nice.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2550477864

Outsider: After Life is a visually stunning point and click adventure about life after humanity’s extinction. Following a freak accident, involving a power surge and a human skull, a robot named ‘HUD-ini’, see what they’ve done there, is awakened and becomes the only one who can save the universe. This is a game about Loneliness and detachment, from the singular robot AI, to the empty planet, to the fragmentary narrative. The story is told through one continuous camera shot, which zooms in and out depending on the puzzle. This, along with the subtle atmospheric soundtrack, really adds to the immersion. Puzzles are logical and varied, many involving you to log into computers to access data. In fact, you’ll spend the first half hour of the game, rebooting HUD-ini, until you get him on his feet and are able to move around the desolate planetary landscape. Subsequent puzzles involve aligning satellites and playing a text based ‘choose your own adventure’ story. But this is not a game of fetch quests; you don’t pick up and use items. Things you interact with reveal the puzzles, in a similar way to games like ‘The Witness’. Puzzle difficulty fluctuates, but some can get quite tough. I was stumped on more than one occasion. There is a hint system, but this doesn’t always help, rather, just tells you how the mechanics of the puzzle work. You’ll get there in the end, either by trial and error, or thinking outside the box. Despite the difficulty, the game is actually quite relaxing. Outsider: After Life is a polished sci-fi adventure with a unique artstyle and interesting puzzles. With its emotional, existential story, this is a mystery you’ll want to see through to the end.
Short but great game. All the puzzles carry something unique in them and they are very visually appealing. Addionally, the story is quite intriguing.
Great story and atmosphere, every puzzle mechanic is unique
Just finished playing. Was a nice experience. Various puzzle types / nothing very hard, 3.0hr playtime. Some of the puzzles went on a few iterations longer than I would've liked, but again, overall nice experience. Was a good short game if you're in the mood for sci-fi theme and light puzzles. I enjoyed it.
Great puzzles, great art style and unexpectedly emotional journey
Very simplistic game with very easy puzzles. $10 for something barely 2 hours long, feels like it was made just to get you past the 2 hr mark so you would not be able to refund.
