I must say. This game has improved over the last few days. The developer is actively working on perfecting this game. I left a negative review after my first playthrough but after going back and playing some more I have noticed some improvements. If you are a fan of the old Resident Evil games, I do recommend you give this game a try. It certainly gives me that nostalgic feeling from my childhood. If you decide to join in and buy this title, give some feedback to the developer. They will listen to your feedback.
There is a great deal of potential here but for now I can't recommend Outbreak: Endless nightmares. the biggest issue by far is the camera and aiming controls in the 1st/3rd person views. Trying to move your mouse in a straight line is a skill in itself in this game. Camera and aiming just randomly goes diagonally. Movement is also incredibly clunky, again while moving in a straight line your character just goes in a random direction. Some animations also need work especially recoil animations. A Glock doesn't have anywhere near the same recoil as a shotgun. Hit boxes are also way too generous. I really wanted to like this game but there are too many issues that make it unplayable for me right now. Really hope there are a lot of fixes and patches soon.
Outbreak Endless Nightmares is the newest entry from our solo dev at Dead Drop Studios. It's an experiment to merge rogue-like elements with the Survival Horror aspects. Our semi-main character Lydia, first introduced in Outbreak: The New Nightmare and subsequently starring in her own Outbreak: The Nightmare Chronicles, returns for a 3rd game. Fresh off the ending of Chronicles, she finds herself passing out and waking up here. The ghostly residents are not exactly thrilled with seeing her, but are nonetheless happy to offer tidbits of wisdom and guidance. This serves as a hub of sorts. Here you swap characters, organize your loot, covert gunpowder into ammo, determine a load-out, and figure which anomaly to explore. Let's get to the actual gameplay however. Uri has given us 3 view-points this time around. If you're an old-schooler from the 90's, then step right up and claim your tanky controls. If you're more of a modern gamer, take your over-the-shoulder camera-style and controls. If you're into the first-person perspective, you've got that too. Each of them have pros and cons but you've got plenty of freedom to choose whichever on the fly no less. As Lydia (or any of her returning comrades from New Nightmare) seek to understand what is going on, they have no choice but to enter the anomalies. These anomalies serve as the dungeons of the game. They are semi-randomized, in that our solo dev has a large supply of pre-set rooms and layouts that snap together Lego's style each time you enter. So this means after awhile, you'll recognize a few of the lay-outs .However the enemies, traps, and loot are randomized each time you enter to keep you on your toes. As you clear rooms and blast enemies into smithereens, you'll earn Essence (aka money) and experience points, which level up your people. Some of the ghosts are enterprising entrepreneurs who are more than happy to trade that precious Essence for supplies like guns, weapons, ammo, and the like. Leveling up makes your characters more powerful and grants them perk points for specialized traits. Each of the characters has his or her own play-style so pick and choose whomever suits you. Our solo dev has also finally been able to address one of the chief complaints and given us some new kick-ass animations! Let's talk about a few of the things that may galvanize players however. As a Rogue-like, expect the anomalies to bash you into the ground until you level up and acquire some of those awesome guns. Some people will enjoy this challenge. They may enjoy getting just that one inch closer to or one more room further than before. Others will feel it to be an artificial padder that forces you to grind. Another galvanizing issue is the durability system. Similar to Uri's first two games, weapons can bust after enough abuse. This time however, firearms are not spared. Luckily, you can patch up anything with a repair kit. You can even convert any weapon (even broken ones) into repair kits themselves. However, after being slapped back together enough times, the item will be just too damaged to ever reassemble. This means, you *will* eventually lose every weapon you ever acquire. There is a generous window on how many times you can repair something though, so don't let that discourage you. Multi-player is back through local or online split-screen. However due to the nature of the system, the host's characters and stats are used. I do recommend this game for sure. Don't let the fact I was one of his guinea pigs discourage you from listening to what I have to say. I definitely enjoyed this game and enjoyed playing it and help shaping it (even if ya did nuke our progress a couple times there, Chief!). If you're on the fence about it, watch some gameplay footage of it and see if you like it.
UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM Livestreaming this today within the hour with my brother and I already tested a good half hour and the feel is very nostalgic and classic. The channel is Twohandedcontroller if you want to see the gameplay and small review. (will remove channel if inappropriate but just providing a writing to visual review if people want) Cons: -The sensitivity is uncontrollable although I adjusted the only settings bar for "look/turn" everything whips around so fast. So mouse and keyboard might be the way to go for mouses that have a DPI button. -The zombie AI are only aware if you're 5 feet in proximity as well as shooting distance with assault rifle, shotgun and handgun have to be used with in 5 feet or 1/4 size of the room the character and the zombie are in to hit. - Room camera directional input is wonky for when screen transitions to the another room, if I want analog input to move down (towards the camera) it'll go up (away from the camera and into a wall) unless I do a input direction scramble but making my character do a 360 to reorient them. -no choice for left or right handed in first person point of view. Being a right, it's odd but not impossible. Pros: -the horror feeling is definitely well done. I might just be a coward but it's creeping me out proper as a horror fan. -The lighting and graphics are looking great and giving me over 120 FPS on my 2080 on "insane" graphics setting. So it's fantastic optimization. -The UI look in the inventory bring me some real delight when it looks as perfect as the old Resident Evil's. So the only issues I can bring to light are just super technical and surface. The cons I mentioned are by no means to stray away from the game, but hopefully will be updated soon for ease of use and immersion. I still recommend this game right away cause it's worth the try and amazing price. If I learn the cons I've listed are a mistake on my part for not exploring the settings deeper then the changes will be included in my update on the game 1 hour from now. I'm super excited to see what this game has to offer since my brother and I will play this game to completion, but I'll do another update today once I have 1+ hr of gameplay for an absolute and thorough review. Update, after 93 minutes of gameplay and testing alot of controller configuration in game and in steam, we quickly learned alot of personal preferences must be made in the Steam Big Picture controller settings. I now made the connections for thethe control options to be very traditional The game is currently unplayable for my brother and I. Familiarity and enjoyment for the original outbreaks and OG RE2 make me realize the gameplay is beyond wonky and not currently playable on controller support for now. The choice of anomaly item interactions starting missions is an unfavorable concept. I'm sure it coinciding with the previous outbreaks made by current dev and makes sense in that regard, but I'm not interested in exploring those having experienced this most recent edition. I am incredibly hopeful for better updates in the future so I will leave my thumbs up review to end on a positive note.
Its a really fun game but I feel the weapons certainly need some rebalancing, to go from needing 3 bullets to kill a fat zombie with a target pistol mk.2 to needing legit 6 bullets with a tactical rifle mk3 is beyond a problem, especially when the rifle only has 7 bullets. The game is really fun and i still am finding new enemies that i absolutely didnt expect to run into but the camera certainly needs some work and it is definitely very very janky. Theres a lot of potentional here and hopefully it continues to improve. What's here is a great game though, and it can only get better
In the description it says you can play with an over the shoulder view and first person view. What it doesn't tell you is that there are no camera controls aside from turning. Just does not feel good to play. Also whenever you attack or get attack a bunch of intestines pop out of the characters. Looks really stupid. When using the classic camera there are things in the environment you cannot see. So you are forced to switch camera views to find everything. Items do show up on the map so at least you have an idea of where to look. You can switch camera on the fly. Still though It does not feel good to play so I won't play it.
