Full review: https://thegamehoard.com/2026/05/08/picking-up-steam-our-darker-purpose-pc/ Our Darker Purpose has a stylish dark look and a soundtrack that suits its twisted school setting, but the rogue-like action isn’t quite fleshed out enough to make the required repeat runs that interesting. At its heart is a simple fighting system that involves smart movement and learning enemy patterns to survive, but the upgrade system, even when in your hands when it comes to leveling up, is mostly about straightforward improvement which means it’s rewarding to get what you can but also makes runs mostly differentiated by your power level rather than new approaches to the action. Effective boss design and the feeling you can always be working towards useful upgrades through combat and exploration make it work even though the climbs through Edgewood become a bit tedious, the game stretching its pool of content a bit thin with the enforced repetition.
I was just remembering this game, hadn't played in a while, but wanted to give a review. I really like this game. the aesthetic is really unique, and THERES A DODGE ROOOOLLLL. I play a lot of binding of isaac, and yah isaac is definitely more varied and crazy, but it is hard to compare anything to isaac. our darker purpose is it's own thing, there is a dodge roll mechanic that already sets it apart, and less variance in the items makes the game a bit more streamlined, but still very fun. the story and ambiance is also great. I highly recommend to anyone who likes the concept of isaac but wants somethin a lil different. I recently came looking at this game again cause i was wondering if the devs are working on anything else in recent years. doesn't look like it but I wish them well in all their pursuits.
Yes, it looks like Binding of Isaac drawn by Tim Burton, and at first, it plays like it, too. But you'll soon notice that ODP is more than different enough to be its own thing, with many good ideas, some bad and some good but badly done. GOOD - art style - atmosphere - story and lore - permanent progress with both permanent upagrades (ex: carry more healing items) and equipable perks (like the Charms in Hollow Knight) - the Achievements unlok in-game stuff BAD - all areas look the same - most Achievements are either way too difficult, way too luck-based or both - starting from the boss of the first chapter, the game becomes unfairly difficult, with lots of projectiles and hazards that are unavoidable - the game's version of a smart bomb (chalk clouds) is way too long to activate, it appears at random places and it covers what's under it (meaning that you can't see your character or the dangers until it dissipates) - no in-game information about what the controller's commands do and no possibility to reconfigure the controls - I played for almost 30 hour and I've never seen some items that are supposed to be unlocked from the start Overall, I had a fun time playing legit for a few hours but I used a trainer to get infinite health and infinite chalks afterwards.
An action rogue-like that is similar to Binding of Isaac but has a style both gameplay, story, and visually all it's own. Our Darker Purpose is a complex game in more ways then one that involves plenty of darkness, rolling, levelling up, item gathering, and secret finding. You fight your way up a school where danger and darkness are ever present, And the further up you get the odder the place and things you find get.
Doesnt run anymore
I saw Edward Gorey perform a 15-minute-long finger puppet version of Hamlet in the late 90s. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were two heads facing different directions on the same body. Our Darker Purpose scratches a lot of itches for me. The art and music are good, and I like the dry, morbid sense of humor in the flavor text, but it plays like a less fun version of Blinding of Isaac. The items and level-up perks mostly give straight stat upgrades, and there's none of the item synergies that make BOI so interesting from one run to the next. Our Darker Purpose gets a (very) soft recommendation from me. The devs nailed the aesthetic they were going for, but the gameplay isn't quite good enough for me to want to 100% it.
I wish this game came back in a big way. It had the old Binding of Isaac feel with added mechanics that made it really niche. The entire aesthetic is wonderful. It's challenging in a good way, maybe a bit grindy in terms of unlocks, but overall worth purchasing.
I really like this game the story and gameplay are fun
